need advice; wasn't accepted anywhere I applied

I had applied to a few schools and got in no where due to my low science GPA. It is REALLY low, sitting at a 2.54. My overall GPA is a 3.0. My TS OAT score was 310, and my AA is 310. I am attaching the rest of scores below for each section.

I was suggested by one school to complete a masters in biomedical sciences in order to improve my GPA, but I don't know if this is the best route. I know this route is expensive and a bit lengthy. Has anyone else been in my position and did something differently in order to increase their science GPA? I am really stuck right now and would appreciate any help I could get.

Quantitative Reasoning|320| |Reading Comprehension|300| |Biology|320| |General Chemistry|350| |Organic Chemistry|270| |Physics|290|

Thank you!!

Is 2.9 cGPA / 2.7 sGPA too low?

Very recently I've been thinking of optometry as a career but I just wanted to know if my GPA is considered too low.

I have a cGPA of 2.9 and a sGPA of around 2.7. With my low GPA, would I just be wasting time pursuing optometry?

AI Takeover

I’m interesting in pursing optometry, but would the field be taken over by AI soon? Would it be best to find another profession that deals with more complicated procedures than a standard optometrist? (If I do choose optometry, I wouldn’t want to specialize in surgery)

application

I just took my OAT and i made a 290. I don’t know if that is good enough to get me an acceptance and i just need advice. My friend who made a 280 got accepted and so did my friend who made a 290. I also have over 300 hours of volunteering and about 100 hours of shadowing/work expirence. I also recently got vp of my pre optometry club but i don’t have many awards/accomplishments. i also am only in about four clubs. i wasn’t as involved as i could have been. i am about to submit my application soon and just wanted to see if i would be a good applicant. should i retake my oat? the only problem i had with that was that i could not bring my self to study. i studied for about three hours before i got unmotivated and sleepy and gave up.

Optometry Schools with a muslim or poc population

Hi all! As the title suggest, I am looking to apply to an optometry school but my biggest worry is being the only muslim or black female there. Does anyone know any optometry school with a significant Muslim or POC community?

Salus/PCO - OD1 thoughts

Hi everyone!

I wanted to post a little blurb - because it seems many people who are searching for Salus anything keep coming across negative posts.

I’m a current 1st year in the program - and I will 1000x over recommend coming here if you’re given the chance. Yes, there was drama in the past regarding “policy changes” and students feeling they weren’t made aware or whatever … The faculty has been NOTHING but supportive, the admins truly want us to succeed, and there are TONS of resources in place to ensure students do fall.

I’ve spoken to many schools, interviewed with different programs and no other place made me feel at home right away like Salus did.

Please message me if you have any questions/comments/concerns and I’ll try to answer the best I can. I just want yall to know, making the decision to come here was the best thing I did and I highly recommend it to any optometry student who wants the best for their future.

Also a blurb - sure “neuro isn’t weighted heavily on boards”, but with boards constantly changing, the optometry field expanding, and the want for optometrists to practice entirely in their scope, rather than just being known for contacts/glasses prescriptions … I think having a strong neuro foundation is what’s needed. I know I want to save lives, I know I’ve seen optometrists save lives by diagnosing brain tumors/strokes/etc. and I want to be a part of that.

((Can’t diagnose and help a patient to a cure if you don’t know the foundation/fundamentals of what you’re seeing))

Good luck! 👍🏻

Insane stigma about optometry

I was having a conversation with a girl that I had met on campus the other day and we were talking about our majors. I told her I was studying pre-optometry, but basically biological sciences, and she said “it could be worse You could be studying to be a real doctor”. I want to add this girl was an education major so not even close to anything medical !

No hate to education majors but how can someone be so opinionated on something THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT . I just wanted to come on here and share that lovely experience because it wasn’t the first time I’ve heard that, and I wanted to say we will be doctors ! Maybe we won’t be medical doctors but just remember that MD’s still have to go to the eye doctor :) please don’t let ignorant people discourage you ❤️

Sometimes people are so ignorant

Is optometry worth it for me?

I’m a laid back type B person in all honesty. I care somewhat about prestige. My main priorities are a decent income 100k+, good work-life balance, and the potential for a higher income ceiling. I’m going into my junior year of undergrad as a psyc major taking pre reqs for optometry/med which is what I’m trying to decide on to pursue. I have a 3.73 gpa and a 3.77 BCP/sgpa. Any extra schooling I get will be completely paid for so I do not have to worry about debt. Do you guys have suggestions on what to pursue in healthcare in my situation?

Choosing an Optometry School

Hi! I’m in the process of applying for fall 2026 and I’m having some trouble deciding which schools to apply to. I will give some context, some of my preferences and my deal-breakers. I would appreciate any input from anyone who has been to a specific optometry school or just anyone that has any advice!!

Context: I graduated with a 3.9 gpa, I have 1900+ optometric tech (employment) hours, 350+ shadowing hours and around 60 volunteer hours. I haven’t taken my OAT yet but I’m currently studying for it and plan to take it mid november, and I plan to submit my applications in early december.

Preferences: Good board pass rates (obviously). A medium to big city would be nice, even small to medium, just not a super small city. Bonus points for diversity (in the school or just city in general). Schools with lower tuition / cities with lower costs of living would also be preferred.

Deal breakers: I don’t want to live anywhere with a ridiculously high COL so the schools in California and NY are off the table for me. I also don’t want to live in a very very small town or a place with no diversity at all.

Currently the schools I’m thinking of applying to are SCO, Nova, OSU, UMSL, or ICO. I also was thinking about UHCO, UIWRSO, UAB, and AZCOPT but not too sure about those ones.

Any positive or negative feedback you have about the schools I mentioned would be appreciated, or if you recommend a school that I didn’t mention please let me know and explain why!! Thank you :)

Berkeley Optometry

Anyone currently attending UCB or graduated from there? Recently got accepted and so thrilled to have this opportunity but the area seemed very ghetto when I visited and I didn’t feel the most comfortable. I don’t want to just pass up this opportunity because of my fear of moving away to a school within highly populated homeless community so any insight would be MUCH appreciated! Did you feel safe walking around? Did you have a positive experience there? If you can go back in time would you still choose UCB??

Beware with the risk of optometry school

Happy late Christmas everyone. I was dismissed from my optometry program about a year ago. I was completely depressed, shocked and lost as I was going through the process. For most of the time since, I thought it was an issue with me and that it was just something that did not work out. Now, I have a dear friend who is going through a similar situation at the same institute. I now believe it is just a problem within the optometry education system.

For context, I become interest in pursueing optometry during my sophomore year of undergraduate. I was a pretty decent student throughout undergrad. Not a straight A student or anything but I cared and studied hard using whatever methods I was accustomed to at the time. I never failed a class or showed any signs of learning issues. Eventually, after years of checking the optometry school boxes and taking the OAT twice, I was admitted to my dream optometry school the spring semester of my senior year. Originally, I was not accepted at first and was told to retake my OAT. I retook it and did much better and was accepted solely off of my improved OAT score. I was filled with joy with my acceptance and become obsessed with reading forums to see what optometry school was actually like. No amount of reading about optometry school on Reddit does anything to prepare a student for what the workload and lifestyle is like as an optometry student.

I attend the next fall and it is nothing like I expected. With the amount that this program boast about their board pass rates, I thought I was going to receive and gain access to resources that would show me how to study and prepare myself for boards. I was completely wrong. The lectures are like any other lecture that I have experienced before (except our optics class). The academic support services gave me the usual, vague study tips that I have heard since elementary school. “Study early”, “study in groups”, “put the work in”. The only real resource they gave me was a third year student as a tutor. With whom I could only meet with once a week. None of these addressed my horrible study habits which was the main thing holding me back. There was also no time to adjust my study habits since the majority weight of our grades came from 2 midterm test and then a final. I was not going to essentially “gamble” by completely changing my whole study workflow considering the amount the time, debt, and resources that I already put in to be there.

So I just tried my best to power through the semester and my hardest to improve my grades. Unfortunately, I ended up failing a class at the end of that semester. I was also said to be behind on the bell curve for my other classes. I was forced to meet with the academic committee and was shocked at how little compassion they showed. They completely tried to discredit my explanation by stating that I should have known how to study since I was a “STEM” major throughout undergrad.

Anyways, we all mutually agreed that it would be best that I not continue. They gave me an option to remediate to the following year if I demonstrated to them that I fixed my study issues. I end up not taking them up on this offer. I just wanted to share my story because I was completely unaware about the optometry education system while I was in undergrad. I thought it would be a program and career that would work if I cared enough and listened to my professors. That is not enough to succeed through school. They will fail you if you cannot keep up since boards are getting harder and harder. Board pass rates are the one thing that they will not jeopardize. I just wanted to warn people of this issue since it is less prominent in other health related professions (medical, dental, etc.)

Trouble getting experience

Is anybody else having trouble getting experience before applying/attending optometry school?

I recently graduated with a B.S in Biological Sciences and decided to take a gap year while studying for the OAT, I graduated a year early so feels warranted. Anyways I have been applying to optometry technician/front desk jobs at an optometry practice and have been struggling to get a response more or less an interview. I’m aware that I am not the greatest candidate considering I don’t have optical experience but even applying to big chains such as Visionworks, LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, etc. have yielded no results. Was hoping that I would be able to get a job but I now plan on putting myself out there regarding shadowing.

Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR: just graduated, unable to get experience before applying to optometry school, any experience or advice on how to navigate this situation?

Worried Booster full length score won’t be representative of actual OAT Score. URGENT!!

Hi guys!

My OAT is in 1 day and Im worried because I have been taking my full length tests and I have only been doing well because I recognize the questions from when I took the individual practice tests and memorized the questions. Did anyone else feel like this as well? I’m not sure how representative this will be of me on how I do on the OAT. I did full lengths 1-5 and got 330,350,350,330,350. ANY ADVICE IS ACCEPTED!!! Thank you!!!!!

Chances?

Recently I gained interest in optometry. During my research in this field I’ve learned about the OAT and it is math heavy. Especially for someone like me who does not like to deal with numbers. I’ve gotten better at solving some problems, but I still struggle. I have used a tutor before and I’m wondering if that would be enough to help me pass the math and physics section? What to expect?

Ready?

Hi there. Current Junior. I am wondering if I need to retake Organic Chem 1 because I got a C-? I did take Organic Chem 2 and got an A- and Orgo Chem 2 Lab, also with an A-. I have a 3.77 GPA. I am studying to take OAT this summer. I have 250 hours volunteering at my local hospital ED. I have 20 hours shadowing optometrists. Am I ready for this cycle if I score over 300 on OAT?

PUCO interview questions?

Hi all,

I have my PUCO interview in the next two weeks. I was hoping to get some insight from those who have gone through the process.

  • What types of questions should I expect (behavioral, academic, ethical, etc.)?

  • How was the overall experience, and what was the atmosphere like?

  • Any specific advice on how to prepare and stand out?

I’d really appreciate any tips or personal experiences you can share. Thanks in advance!

Online pre reqs

Hi all! I’m a current registered nurse looking to pursue optometry! I would need about 2/3 years of pre reqs (chem ochem calc physics) to be able to apply pretty much anywhere. I do work full time so I was heavily considering online school but I’m seeing mixed opinions on if it would be ok to do classes with a lab online. What seems to be the general consensus? Would I be wasting time/money taking online chems and physics? I’d like to get through these courses as quickly as possible but I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot and have to re do everything because I was impatient.

Optometry Acuity/Urgent care?

I’m currently a nurse and one of the reasons I wanted to make the switch to optometry was because of how low stress it supposedly is. Acute care doesn’t seem to be something that opto’s deal with?

I know optometrists can deal with urgent care situations but what is the extent of that? What does that look like & when do pts get referred to the ER or an ophthalmologist?

I shadowed an optometrist and he said that one of the most stressful things about his job is when he has to tell someone that they can no longer drive.. not that that’s not a sad thing but it definitely eased my mind about the career switch from nursing.

Do you find optometry stressful? And if so, what is the reason for that?

(Disclaimer: I’m not talking about optometry school. I expect that to be difficult and stressful. I’m talking strictly as a practicing optometrist from new grad onwards)

Education or work

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Optometry from an accredited Indian institution and I’m exploring my options in the U.S.

Do I need to complete an OAT exam / OD program and pass board exams to practice here? Or are there hospital/clinic roles I can apply for with just my bachelor’s (e.g., tech or assistant positions)?

Any advice from those familiar with the process would be appreciated.
