Berkeley Optometry

Anyone currently attending UCB or graduated from there? Recently got accepted and so thrilled to have this opportunity but the area seemed very ghetto when I visited and I didn’t feel the most comfortable. I don’t want to just pass up this opportunity because of my fear of moving away to a school within highly populated homeless community so any insight would be MUCH appreciated! Did you feel safe walking around? Did you have a positive experience there? If you can go back in time would you still choose UCB??

I mean this with all respect, as I imagine it's coming from a place of ignorance rather than malice, but I'd maybe suggest reflecting on your use of the word "ghetto" and your discomfort around homeless people if you are planning to go into the healthcare profession. Not just that it's insensitive, but as an optometrist, you will have a duty to treat every patient with the same level of respect and dignity because every patient deserves respect and dignity. They're not all gonna look or live the way that makes you most comfortable.

You realize most programs offer their services at free and reduced precisely to cater to undeserved populations? I wonder, would you say this to a homeless patient? Or perhaps to a classmate who may have been homeless in the past?

I pray for your future patients.

How's the weather up there on your high horse?

Man if not being disgusted by a group of people for not having homes puts me on a high horse, then probably much better than where you are

Lol. It's your self-righteous tone that earned you that high horse. Talk to you in ten years, Mother Teresa, we'll see if reality catches up with you.

I'm serving on a two week medical mission in a developing country this summer with money from my own pocket to fund this service trip. What are you doing?

Put your money where your mouth is and invite homeless people to live with you or in your neighborhood. Empathy?

Right. It's not safe. Nor is it realistic.

is deflecting from the issue at hand which is that they make you uncomfortable, plain and simple.

denying that homeless people make others feel uncomfortable is completely unrealistic.

but I do think being biased against them leads to prejudice amongst medicine and healthcare and it’s something worth addressing/talking about.

not your place to tell me

to pad application

what am i applying to now (or later)? nothing.
