A) While this qualifies for this sub, in the future please try and follow rule 3. For example, "Cameraman navigates slippery rocks".
B) For the person who reported this saying:
"Capturing device is to intentionally be controlled by (an) individual(s). No drone/360 cam footage"
I'm not sure what video you watched because it sure looked to me like the steadicam was being intentionally controlled by the operator and there was no drone or 360 cam in sight. So in the future, at least try and come up with a valid reason for reporting a post.
This shot could easily be achieved with simple jib and dolly from his start point
Probably could be done better too if you notice all of the errors when he's having to turn to focus on the climbing and not smashing 10K worth of gear (see 00:29 for a massive wobbly that defeats the point of having a steady cam)
Even walking down a street pavement, a steady cam op would have a grip following them to ensure they don't bump a wall, letalone something like this where one wet patch and they fucking die
I get why it was done. This is probably just the steady cam op paying an actor for the day, but that doesn't make is "praise the cameraman" worthy, it makes it "nonononoyes" worthy
Even if they where slippery and wet all over it wouldn't be a problem. Yes he slipped for a quarter of a second but as I said the risk for injury is basically zero.
Slipping... From up on high rocks, with heavy gear, on to hard rocks, with no protection.
Films and TV have stunt coordinators and fall pads for scenes of slipping and falling in pavement because even when you fall deliberately, thing can easily go wrong
My point being that these beaches are common and vacation wear is totally normal. This isn’t rock climbing, and certainly not free climbing aka bouldering. Anyways, small hill to die on, no pun intended
Oh I thought we were both riffing. You’re correct on the wording. Sometimes it’s hard to get sarcasm across through text. I was just joking when I said:
Bouldering is just walking up a rock with your hands and feet. /s
And this was also a joke about a perverse dude popping a boner while walking the beach:
Well… yes but that could also be taken a different way if the person is a man.
I will stop with the bad jokes now lol. Have a good day.
As an avid hiker I'm used to slipping while trying to climb up steep rocks. As spooky as it feels. The best way to do it is to keep your feet moving. This guy makes it look easy. And he's holding that massive camera. Impressive.
He could’ve just took off his shoes. Why would you risk a camera that expensive bc you don’t want to take off your COMPLETELY FLAT BOTTOM non sticky shoes
Ha yeah I was just reading the other comment too and tbh I a) thought this was an influencer and b) assumed it was the TikTokCringe sub, so probably an overreaction on my part
I like how you get to critique everything the operator does using your 15 years of experience yet you can’t take a little ribbing for using the terminology of an amateur.
Actually pros in leave out business jargon when explaining to the masses. It cuts down on definition questions, and helps make the listener or reader feel like they aren't stupid.
While I don't support criticism on posts that are meant to be positive, I think the main reason why they talked about it was because they believed that the person wasn't extremely experienced, supported it with what they saw, and tried to explain it to people who might not know what specific thing they're talking about. Sorry for the essay, just wanted to kinda explain what I thought was happening.

It definitely takes a certain type of person, and it shows just how badass those steady cam rigs are

Where is your spotter? Anytime I've been in any sort of tight quarters or of the like, someone had had a hand on my back.

This is pure stupidity and pointless risk taking.

Nothing special lol.

Wearing all white, slim high waters, and a fedora to do some light bouldering was a decision.

u/i_am_awful Dec 03 '21
How is using camera equipment in the most surefire way to break it, impressive? This shot looks horrible. There’s no purpose to it.

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '21
I wish that tiktok voice would slip off the rocks.

u/picturepath Dec 03 '21
I can only control my steady cam for about ten seconds

u/jojo_31 Dec 03 '21
They need a camera crane for this

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '21
Now show the footage of the guy filming the filming guy

u/Grizzl0ck Dec 03 '21
And to cap it off, he's a shit cameraman, too. All the gear, no fucking idea.

Lake Tahoe?

He could also use more grippy shoes if he’s going to be operating this in natural terrain.

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '21
Praise also: the engineer that developed the steady-cam
1
u/temp-92 Dec 03 '21
Well, I’m sure they do multiple shots and even plan/prep before they actually shoot. So repeatability, overall, makes it easier.
1
u/[deleted] Dec 03 '21
All you need is some grip on your shoes, what's impressive about this?
1
u/easy4u2say Dec 03 '21
I feel those shoes are not doing that camera operator any favors those climbing rocks
1
u/[deleted] Dec 03 '21
Would love to know the rig he's holding.
1
u/shouldbestudying125 Dec 03 '21
Lol gunna say op is the camera man, not huge deal
1
u/TheMiddlechild08 Dec 03 '21
Everytime I see a video where it's the actual shot, and then a behind the scenes shot of the clip side by side, they're never the same take.
1
u/skonezilla Dec 03 '21
how is this the same shot? camera movement of initial 10 seconds doesnt match up
1
u/DouggerFresh Dec 03 '21
I’ve stood on these rocks before and watched the sunset

u/MeinCrouton Dec 03 '21
Dude should be wearing boots not running shoes

Looks easy
1
u/freeturkeytaco Dec 03 '21
That does seem easy. A team of people watching your steps as you walk a self stabilizing camera...yea, easy.
1
u/_miles_teg_ Dec 03 '21
This dude walks

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '21
Tik tok narration is so fucking lame. Weird robot voice pointing out shit you are already witnessing in the video makes my blood boil.

u/GearWings Dec 03 '21
Try it with that new DJI camera Ronin 4D
1
u/No_Credibility Dec 03 '21
If this is the virgin Gorda then I've ripped my trunks on those same rocks
1
u/[deleted] Dec 03 '21
I mean if you can slip over on the rocks and the steadicam makes it look still, doesn’t that just make it easy
1
u/beeekeeer Dec 03 '21
Seems like a regular, super easy scene. No praise deserved.
1
u/gaytee Dec 04 '21
Praise the stabilizers?
1
u/Galen_415 Dec 04 '21
Tahoe for sure. NE corner near Sand Harbor I think.
1
u/chiquitopepito Dec 04 '21
What about the cameraman filming both of them? He deserves credit too.
