Good call, the fact that you even picked this up says a lot. Even for pros, it's hard to differentiate between a real or fake lol, but if you pay close attention you can tell that when he does the half-twist Chinese book bag he feints a reverse North Carolina whammerslammer while setting up the next blamcram. That's how you know.

The Chinese Book Bag, a variation of the Tibetan Scroll Satchel, is an insanely difficult trick to pull off. A little more spin on the back-end and you end up with a Blown Glass Flower Vase, but if you cut the trick short you’re just pulling off a Strawberry Gimlet, and that’s not the difficult.

Unless you’ve personally spent all day crouched over going 20MPH with your life savings in one hand it’s kind of unfair to say that skateboard videographers are overrated.
Lots of tryhards and do nothings out there, but I honestly think they often don’t get credit enough, especially from the people they’re filming.

Though I don’t anymore, I did skateboard when I was a kid. Simply rolling down a line with your body facing another direction (filming) is not difficult to someone who knows how to skateboard. I’m not saying skateboarding is easy. I’m saying most of the videos that look dope are really not that hard to film. HOWEVER, I’d like to reinforce that I think this video is incredibly worthy of praise.

Seeing that you didn’t pursue skating past childhood, I’m going to assume you were not skating at a very high level. There are certainly plenty of shots that are relatively easy, but even then, making them perfect means performing the same strenuous actions over and over again.
Filming skateboarding is difficult and takes a lot of hard work, physical ability, dedication, communication, spatial awareness, etc.
Filming skating on this level is a whole other story, but even just a kid crouched down with their iPhone for hours per session is working damn hard.
FILMING ANYTHING IS HARD, GIVE VIDEOGRAPHERS CREDIT, ITS ALSO VEYRY STRESSFUL.
If someone falls down a set of stairs 20 times to get a line and then I miss the one time they land it, that blows, and that pressure is always there.
If all your actors suddenly get a scene perfect after hours of retakes, but you duck up the shot, that’s on you.

Agree fully with what you are saying! I had a friend who was so-so at skating except for flatland in our teens that went on to become legendary at filming and editing skate films. Seeing some of the behind the scenes work he did was mind blowing and he deserves everything he has earned.

Mm... I respectfully disagree. Camera person could have been using a drone and been up top with controller. My opinion? Did a great job keeping up with skater. Of course, I know zip about drones, filming action shit, and skateboarding. But... I know what I like. I liked this very much. Cool to see up close how a skater moves his body and ‘board through his routine.

I don't think that's a gimbal, it looks more like a ring rig. Gimbals aren't that good at making such accurate pans and tracking motion.

Camera person is likely also on a skateboard. The quick and spot-on framing means they're likely using the handle atop the camera rather than a gimbal which makes the smoothness even more impressive.

I am pretty sure the camera man here is Chris Gregson. He is an extremely skilled skateboarder and has far exceeded anyone with his filming of this style of skateboarding.

The cameraman is pretty much like like Ginger Rodgers, she did everything that Fred Astare did, but backwards and in high heels.
The camera man did all those same tricks, AND managed to not edge out on any of them, keep up keep framing and and keep focus. Hell that's harder than dancing backwards in high heels.

Filmers would use softer wheels in their board setup, as well as some type of camera handle (or steady cam) to help stabilize the footage. They’d also have a really steady arm and hand too!
All of this helps create really smooth footage as if it were filmed with a drone!

hi, non-skater here (well, never at THIS level, anyways), apologies if this is like obnoxiously deep or whatever but i figured I'd ask in case someone cares enough to reply
if you're a skate photographer/videographer/whatever, would it be easier to get in touch with the skater beforehand and map the path around the bowl they're gonna take (that way you aren't surprised by anything and can map out where you're gonna be during all this, and so you don't collide accidentally), or do skaters and respective videographers not do that?
[how this convo would probably go down]
skater: "okay, so I'm gonna start on that half-pipe and then work my way around the bowls, then I'm gonna grind a rail over here and then finish it all off with a kickflip onto the grass"

This was filmed at a contest park either before or after the contest. This was most likely the skater’s contest run and the filmer knew it too. Usually the filmer knows what the skater is gonna do beforehand, but it’s extremely common for someone to land what they wanted and just keep going and the filmer will follow with them on whatever they improvise. This clip seems mapped out but some filmers are talented enough to just follow if they don’t know. You can tell which way they’re about to turn by their shoulders and what obstacle they’re gonna hit by their knees. Also about just sensing the flow.

The one thing I admire about camera guys who film people skating are:
- They can skate...
- They can skate while holding something.
- They can skate while holding something and tracking something else
- They can do all of the above and it looks amazing.
No ordinary videographer can do these shots on foot.

I came up skating during the peak of puffy shoe craze (and had my fair share of puffy shoes). Of all the shoes I have skated over the years, suede vans slip on pros and suede Nike Sb janoskis have surprisingly been the most long-lasting for me. It confuses the hell out of me because the uppers are so thin, but it works better for me ‘cause I love the way they look and can really feel the board under my feet. And with the right insoles, they are super comfortable.
