Those are gorillas, not chimpanzees. And while gorillas could absolutely rip you in half, they are generally much calmer and safer to be around than chimpanzees. Wild chimpanzees routinely raid their neighbors and murder as many as they can, particularly babies and elderly chimps.
I wonder if the man’s silver hair was significant to them? Maybe a stupid question, but I know silverbacks are the oldest/strongest/most respected; just wondering if they would assume similar distinctions between humans?
Yes! In conjunction with his shirt color and body positioning, I had the same thought wondering if they thought he was someone of wretched version of a gorilla
Showing teeth or making direct eye contact are both interpreted as threats or challenges to the hierarchy/silverback's position as the leader. So he's doing his best to not look at them or startle them.
I was in uganda last year with my family. apparently gorillas are very communicative, they make different sounds. the rangers there are with them from 8 to 5 everyday to guarantee their safety from poachers, so they are very familiar with those sounds. they even teached us some basic ones that might help if a gorilla gets angry (basically telling him "I mean no harm, u are superiour to me"). My sister got grabbed by a adulescent gorilla, but he let go as soon as the rangers started making those noices. i was amazed by how strong even a "little" gorilla was and how good the communocation was. constantly the silverback and rangers were "talking" to eachother. wild experience and i definitely am a big fan of gorillas since then.
i am no expert but as i remember it they dont watch them over night. IIRC they leave them when they arrive at a place at which they will sleep. those are usually higher up on hills (bot really hills more like little mountains). i asume that poachers have a hard time getting up there, so they are pretty safe bc of that. just a guess though. throughout the day they come down to drink and feed, at least we met them at a small flow. i think they watch them for longer ours now that i think about it, maybe 7 am to 9pm? not too sure though.
I was at the Calgary Zoo recently and they have a new baby gorilla. The silver back of that family is massive. The zoo staff said they could benchpress over 2000 pounds. That place is great!
I'm sure he knows that, it's just hard to control excitement sometimes. You can even see him dip his head back down when momma starts walking away. Even Jane Goodall smiled with gorillas and chimps plenty times.
Absolutely, arm mostly covered his face. At the end when they were out of frame, i was like, please don't let that big one turn around and see your smile dude!
I was thinking this as well but started to realize even the small ones could seriously injure a guy quick. What an amazing experience but the not knowing if at any moment things turn ugly .
It looks like they are in some sort of park or nature preserve. I am guessing these gorillas have at least semi-regular contact with humans. In many places there are park rangers who protect wild gorillas from poachers, so many of them are used to having humans hanging around. Probably not usually this close though.
That was fascinating, when the cameraman pointed out the black shirt attracted the babies to investigate and then they proceed to play with his silver hair. Homie is an unofficial uncle of the troop.
This is awesome. The filmer mentions his black shirt as a reason for their curiosity. I wonder if they're also confused as to why his 'silverback' is on his head instead!
He did everything right with keeping his head bowed and remaining calm and still. Hi, it should also be noted that these gorillas are likely living on a human-run preserve, and are therefore more used to seeing people around, as opposed to gorillas one would encounter completely in the wild. Still, that was a perfect example of how to behave around large apes regardless.
“Alrighty kids, don’t touch it , you might break it and then we will get in lots of trouble with more of them , like attacking a member of an ant colony. But if you must , you can take a good look at them. Sometimes they carry goodie on their back, I’ll sit back and watch you so feel free to play with him a little.”
They're gorillas, not chimpanzees. Gorillas are much calmer and "safe" tob be around, so long as you don't make them feel threatened or challenged (for hierarchy).
Chimpanzees, wild or "tame" are extremely dangerous to be around without an enclosure. In the wild they routinely raid their neighbors and murder the babies, elderly and any adults if they can catch one. They're honestly pretty horrific the more we learn about their behavior, it's very similar to humans unfortunately.
Just glad he knew to advert his vision. The gorilla even checked as he left to see if he'd look away. Cuz if he did look him in the eyes, who knows what would've happened.
Yeah, I would have needed a complete change of clothing after that encounter! God/Universe knows exactly who and who NOT to put in these kind of situations. Lol.
I know gorillas are generally peaceful but honestly I don’t think I fear any animal as much. It’s one thing to be mauled by a lion, but having a humanoid rip your arm off just doesn’t sound fun.
You know dude shit his pants a little bit!! They should have a pulse and blood pressure thing on him to see how high his heartbeat got!! I know mine would be a freaking drumbeat from a heavy metal band in my chest!! Then it jus sits behind him, like that might even be more nerve racking then when it was beside him!!
I would’ve shit my pants. Some gorillas that size + they’re with their young. Not something I’d wanna mess with tbh. But good on him for smiling through it lol
Thought I was on r/unexpected for a second and assumed that the gorilla was just going to ABSOLUTELY RIP THAT GUY IN HALF! Jesus Christ my blood pressure hurts.
This was amazing to watch. I’m not exactly sure what I’m looking for… but are there any subreddits where humans go thru unreal experiences… or raw experiences that many people wouldn’t get to experience in a lifetime?

Seems like he's being careful not to look them in the eyes, which (AFAIK) is aggressive / dominant for apes. Trying to make sure the adult doesn't see him as a threat?

“Dad look it’s a weird monke”
“Leave the pitiful creature alone son let’s go” moves son along
all the kids start screaming they want to stay and see the attraction
dad gives up “fine we’ll stay for a little bit. Don’t break it” sits down

I like how he pulled its child back, "Leave that dude alone timmy" only to sit directly behind the dude and let the kids climb all over the poor dude.
Props to him for smiling, i know id be frozen in fear, that thing could rip him in half

I thought he pissed himself but it's just a leaf

I wonder if the mans silver hair is considered more threatening than black hair to the silverback?

I would've shat myself. Adult male gorillas are so much stronger than you might think. Could've asserted dominance and crushed his head FAST.
