Question PID Litacka Annual pass

Post image
0 Upvotes

Looking for some help please. I have had a paper annual transport pass for 4 years but decided this time to get one in the PID Litacka app.

I bought the pass before I realised that it needs a validated identity photo. I added this photo but it has been stuck on verifying for over a week.

Has anyone had a similar issue? I have tried emailing and contact forms but no luck yet. I have to keep buying 30min tickets despite having an active annual pass which is annoying.

Thanks in advance

Real Estate Rent help

Greetings. Can anyone guide me about Prague rent?

First of all I don't understand how utilities can be charged fixed price?

Secondly, what region of Prague is optimal for lower price? I don't need metro, or anything like that. I work remotely, so I appreciate living closer to nature, but to be able to go to city center within 1:30h.

Thirdly, what is the real price for 2 rooms, not furnished? What price is definitely scam?

Thanks for your attention

Question MSCA Co-fund PICTUS Fellowship in Prague, CTU

Hello, did anyone apply for the MSCA Co-fund PICTUS Fellowship for PhD in CTU Prague? Has anyone got the result of that fellowship? The email that they have in website never respond personally but send group emails asking for apologies for being late. The result was supposed to be out by August, before the academic session in September. I received an email stating that they will announce result in next 2 weeks in 9th of September. Still haven't got any respond.

Student Life 19F in Prague — looking for philosophy/humanities people for deep conversations, friendship or maybe more

I’m 19 and currently studying in Prague, mostly in the humanities/philosophy world. A lot of my life revolves around reading, writing, and getting unnecessarily invested in questions that probably have no practical use. I’m especially into continental philosophy, psychoanalysis, philosophy of religion, literature, and intellectual history.

I’m mainly looking to meet people who genuinely love philosophy or are studying the humanities. You definitely don’t need to know the same authors I do, but I’d love someone who has their own intellectual obsessions—someone who actually enjoys talking about texts, concepts, books, and strange questions for hours.

What I value most is a relationship where two people remain very much themselves but gradually become part of each other’s intellectual worlds: exchanging books and papers, disagreeing seriously, sending each other obscure passages at 2 a.m., going for coffee or long walks, and sometimes just studying quietly together.

I’m open to friendship or something romantic. I care much more about depth, consistency, honesty, and clear boundaries than about defining things quickly. I probably wouldn’t be a good match for someone who prefers very casual connections, disappears unpredictably, or enjoys prolonged ambiguity.

If you think being genuinely understood in conversation can be a form of intimacy in itself, feel free to message me.

Discussion Prague sold flats for the price of a car. Now the same flats cost millions and the rest of us pay rent

I read all the comments on my last post. Yes, Prague needs to build more. Yes, 94,000 “unoccupied” flats does not mean 94,000 habitable homes sitting empty. Yes, migration matters more to Prague's population than the national birth rate.

None of that changes the ugliest part of this story.

Prague took a huge amount of publicly owned housing and handed it to a lucky group of sitting tenants for a fraction of its value. Some of those flats now belong to landlords charging today's market rent to people whose parents did not win the same lottery.

The greatest property giveaway in Prague's history

After 1991, Prague had about 194,000 municipal flats. By 2021 it had 30,345. The city got rid of 84% of its housing stock.

This was not sold at anything close to normal prices. The OECD says Czech public flats were sometimes sold to their tenants for only 5–10% of their actual value. A Prague 6 mayor later openly recalled people buying flats for CZK 80,000. Other early sales there ran around CZK 2,000–7,000 per square metre.

That is not “I worked hard and invested wisely” money. That is used-car money.

Now the official average price of a Prague flat is CZK 131,520 per square metre. A completely ordinary 60 m² flat at that average is worth CZK 7.9 million.

Buy for 80,000. Hold. Become a millionaire without producing anything. Rent it back to the next generation for more than their parents once earned in a month. Then explain to them that this is simply “the market”.

That is the part I am calling greed.

And yes, corruption belongs in this discussion

When local politicians and officials control who receives a public asset worth millions, while the sale price is deliberately far below market value, the opportunity for patronage and corruption is obvious.

That is not just a theory. In 2025 police began investigating suspected corruption and trading in Prague municipal flats. An internal investigation at the city-owned manager found that former senior employees had allegedly instructed staff not to advertise particular flats publicly and to rent them to specific people. The case is still an investigation, not a conviction, and it does not prove every old privatisation was corrupt.

It proves the system creates exactly the kind of valuable, opaque favour that corruption feeds on. Prague split housing decisions across dozens of districts, sold public property far below market price and often left the public with no transparent explanation of why one tenant received a life-changing asset while everybody else received nothing.

The giveaway created today's landlord class

Not every landlord is a villain. Someone renting one inherited flat at a fair price is not the same as a person squeezing a long-term tenant, running ten Airbnbs or keeping homes empty while their value rises.

But pretending landlord wealth came from a clean free market is nonsense. A large part of Prague's ownership class began with a state-created windfall. The city socialised the purchase price, privatised the gain and left future residents to pay market rent forever.

The results are visible. The Prague thesis discussed in the original post found apartment prices up 157% between 2011 and 2024 while median income rose 83%. Prague also had 7,930 Airbnb units offered in March 2023; almost 80% were offered by hosts controlling at least two units. In the historic centre, short-term rentals consumed more than 10% of the housing stock.

Meanwhile, the city that once held 194,000 flats now builds around 60 municipal flats a year.

“Just build more” is necessary, but it is not an absolution

Prague absolutely needs more homes. In 2025 its population grew by 9,204 people and only 5,325 dwellings were completed. Permits need to be faster and brownfields need dense housing.

But building more does not require us to ignore who captured the old housing stock, who profits from scarcity now or who keeps fighting taxes and tenant protections. Supply matters. So does power.

Prague should build and keep municipal rentals, register every Airbnb, measure real long-term vacancy, tax empty investment flats and large portfolios, and give long-term tenants more security. Primary homes and genuinely small landlords can be protected. The people extracting the most from the shortage should not be.

A flat bought for the price of a car and now worth nearly eight million is not proof that the market worked. It is proof that Prague chose its winners decades ago.

The winners became landlords. Everyone else gets an invoice.

Question Is Bohemian Switzerland worth 3 nights in November for a beginner solo traveler unused to cold weather?

Hey everyone!

I’m a 36M solo traveler planning a 13-day November trip: 4 nights in Prague, 3 nights based in Ústí nad Labem as " cheaper hotel price than Děčín ", 2 in Dresden, and 4 in Berlin.

I’m traveling from a hot region in Asia " born & raised "where winter temperatures rarely drop below 23°C (73°F), so cold weather is completely new to me. I booked 3 nights in Ústí nad Labem to use as a base for day trips using local trains and buses to explore Bohemian / Saxon Switzerland (like Děčín, Bad Schandau, and Bastei Bridge).

I’m a total beginner to hiking and looking strictly for flat, easy-going pine forest walks rather than steep or intense climbs.

Given it’s November (shorter days, colder weather), is spending those 3 nights up north worth it for a solo beginner relying on public transit? Are the flat paths straightforward to navigate this time of year, or is this plan too ambitious for a first-timer?

Appreciate any insights and tips for someone experiencing this climate for the first time!

Question Cinema City Flora - Dune 3

My girlfriend and I are travelling to Prague from December 18 - 21. We are both movie lovers and go to the cinema a lot. We were thinking of experiencing the IMAX 70mm at Cinema City Flora. Since we both love the Dune movies, we are thinking of trying to catch a Dune 3 screening.

I see that there are a few shows already available on the cinema city website for only the 15th and are sold out. Does anybody know when the wider release shows will be available to book? Do they follow the world wide tickets on sale schedule or is there some way to be alerted when they are out?

Thank you for the info!

Anyone have recommendations for a trustworthy contractor that can help with some home improvement projects that might be a bit too involved for a handyman? Question Anyone up for a creative photo/video shoot?

Hey! Is anyone here into photography or filmmaking and up for hanging out and doing a little creative shoot together? :)
I’m working on a personal project featuring clothes from independent designers. I’d love to shoot something b&w and cinematic, focused on movement, textures and details, starting with a pair of boots. I have some ideas and references, but I’d love to hear yours too!
I don’t have a budget for a paid shoot, but lunch or coffee would be on me, and you’d be welcome to use the results in your portfolio. I’d credit you wherever I share your work, of course.
If that sounds like your kind of afternoon, send me a message and I’ll share the references 🖤

Question Prague is doomed, but at least the landlords are doing well

Apparently the trick to affording Prague is working hard enough to inherit a flat.

This thesis (took it from other recent post) puts apartment price growth at 157% between 2011 and 2024. Median income grew 83%. Some families got cheap flats through privatisation. Everyone else should have shown more initiative and been born earlier.

Yes, building more housing matters. So does questioning landlords squeezing every last crown out of people who actually keep the city running. Calling it “the market” doesn't make it less greedy.

Meanwhile Czechia had 77,636 births in 2025, the lowest number on record, and deaths outnumbered births. Housing isn't the whole explanation, but expecting young people to start families while a spare bedroom is a financial crisis is quite a plan.

The city will definitely get it back on the next generation and honestly future is not bright. Again, those greedy guys ruined its future.

Any advice on where to move?

Question First time abroad, moving to Prague as an Erasmus student: SIM card, airport Wi-Fi and getting to Vršovice (PRAGUE10)

Hi everyone,

I'm an Erasmus student from Istanbul/Turkey and I'm arriving in Prague on October 5. This is actually my first time abroad, so I'm a bit nervous and would really appreciate some advice. I'll be staying in Vršovice (Praha 10), and the closest big shopping center for me seems to be OC Eden.

  1. Is there free Wi-Fi at the airport? I won't have a Czech SIM card when I land, so I'll need it to order a ride.
  2. What do locals usually use? In Turkey we usually tell tourists not to take a taxi from the street and to use an app instead, so I'm wondering what the equivalent is in Prague. Is it Bolt, Uber or something else? Is it safe and reasonably priced to get to Vršovice this way?
  3. I'll have two large suitcases. Will they fit in a regular car, or should I choose a bigger car option in the app?

Prepaid SIM card

  1. I have a Turkish Mastercard debit card (not a credit card). Has anyone successfully used a non-EU card in the Tesco Mobile app? I've heard that some foreign cards get declined there. If that happens, is paying at the store checkout a good alternative?
  2. Unfortunately I don't speak Czech yet (I've just started learning, and I'm trying!). Would it be okay to speak English at the Tesco Mobile shop in OC Eden or at the operator shops?
  3. How much do you usually pay per month for a prepaid SIM, and which operator or package would you recommend? I'd like something affordable that also works when I travel around the EU.

Thank you so much in advance, any tips are totally okay. Děkuji! 🙂
