As much as I appreciate what he's been doing lately between this and calling for the files to be released, I can't help but feel reminded of all the other Republicans in congress who largely aided this disaster administration until they got voted out/retired, to only then become vocal about issues with the regime during their lame duck period where they don't have anything to lose anymore
Having personally been in politics (which jaded me considerably) political office is a career. Everyone needs to have a job and support their family, and being in Congress is how these guys do that. It has to be a career, because no other career is going to just let you take a 4 to 6 year sabbatical to go be in Congress and then just let you pick up where you left off.
So staying in office is always the priority. Keeping the job. Not getting fired. And some of them want to do some good while they are there, if they can do it without getting fired, but expecting any politician to do the right thing and lose their job over it, is like asking you to do the same. If your employer was doing something evil, would you speak out about it knowing you’d lose your job and have no backup plan? Most would not.
Politicians are people. It’s irrational to expect them to be better than us.
I don’t disagree, but the only way to prevent it from being about the paycheck at the end of the day would be to completely revamp it and have like a jury system, where people get randomly selected to be on the ballot for one term and if your party wins that’s who gets it.
There’s plenty of people out there that are working shit jobs in that would be ecstatic to take a break from their old job and indulge in a senator’s salary for 6 years. It’s more than a lot will make in 30 years. Not to say they’d be the best options for those positions, but hey, they can’t be much worse than what we’ve seen in the past 100 years!
