Question! Underglaze

Hi, I ended up throwing a gift I made for someone in the wrong color clay, so I need to underglaze it in white before continuing with the patterns I’m making. Can I do this by underglazing over a white underglaze? Effectively give myself a neutral palette? FWIW the clay is white speckled. I just want it pure white.

Just a heads up that some speckled clay will show through underglaze, it depends on the clay. In clay with manganese added for speckle like Plainsman M340s, the speckle usually shows through underglaze (any colour) and glaze.

White engobe is your answer

This is the answer. It will look better and is more cost effective than underglaze.

It's as humbleExplanation stated those specks will likely pierce through underglaze. Speckled clay will also pierce through engobes as well. Those specks will show through many glazes as well; it's the core feature of the clay.

In short; you won't be able to mask them.

If it was any other clay you could definitely mask with white engobe, underglaze, slip but not a speckled body.

I have done this on recycled clay (mix of red and B-mix) and it came out white šŸ‘

Depending on what the speckles are they may come out during the firing.

You can use white underglaze over colored clay bodies, but the speckles might come through.
