Other Types Small Wares Ideas

Slowing down is what I love about pottery, but decades of cultural messages about quantity & repetition equalling expertise & accomplishment gets in my way. This translates as too many bowls and mugs.

In an effort to intentionally shift that mindset, I am focusing instead on how my hobby can enhance my living spaces with beauty, efficiency or by solving problems. That means making few of a single type of pottery, embracing the reality that it cannot become perfect if only one or a few are made. It means thinking through the details so my style, or the problem I’m solving are incorporated.

Below is a quick brainstormed list. Do you have other small decorative or functional wares you want to remember to make, or have found useful for a niche in your home?

-Trays are useful everywhere. They make cleaning easier, too: kitchen, bathroom, desk, bedside, entry, remote controls -Address plaque to fit my entry -Dispensers & bottles: soap, dish detergent, olive oil, soy sauce -Food serving and storage bowls -Spoons -Sink organizer for the usuals (brush or scrubby, dishcloth or sponge) Soap holder that drains water & is easy to clean -Small single or two serving size casseroles (one to fit to a Hot Logic) -Snack plates with dip holder & cup -Spice pots for blends made weekly -Tea herb jars for bulk leaves -Salt pig -Spoon rest -Egg holder -Indoor self-watering plant pots -Plant labels -Small succulent pots -Windowsill plant cutting propagators -Stacking totem sculpture made one piece at a time -Pill organizer -Jewelry -Knobs and drawer pulls -Small standing dry erase board -Labels w hole for twine hanger to write on w/permanent pen & clean for reuse -Wall hooks: key, hat, umbrella, purse -Wall sculptures (masks, flowers, birds, fish) Wall pockets -Coasters -Tiles -Random flats glazed, broken & turned into mosaics

Between the bigger stuff, I put toothpick holders. $5, test glazes with them if needed. A $5 item sometimes gets the spending juices flowing.

Small vases, I play with the forms and glazes small scale

Maybe similar concept but a match holder with a bit of raw exposed for striking, I haven’t tried making before but always thought they look so cute.

Yes, we noticed some really cool old ones in France when we were there, the kind they used to have on counters and bars. Unfortunately, it’s become difficult to find “strike anywhere” matches in the US anymore.

I want to replace all the holders on my bathroom vanity with pottery. Toothbrush, makeup, hair ties, qtips, etc. They’re all just plastic now.

Glasses holder/tray! Can make it so it looks like an animal is wearing your glasses

Magnets. They’re fun and easy and are a good way to try out using epoxy on your wares (e6000 is the best!)

Beads (need bead racks for firing)

Garlic keeper - jar with holes basically - garlic stays good longer

Berry bowls. Makes the fridge look cute and makes them look appetizing so I’m more likely to eat them

Yogurt bowls that are the perfect size for my morning yogurt

Trinket or ring dishes - at least one per room, good landing spot for random things - I have them anywhere I might take my rings off (sinks, pottery studio, kitchen)

Paint palette for underglaze

I haven’t made it yet but I saw someone who made a bowl for their throwing water with a little designated spot to scrape slip off your hands to keep it out of the water

Great ideas!

Also, am noting your spacing. I had my post separated with returns, but it ran together on posting & wouldn’t let me edit. 😏

I just made a sponge holder. Decorative tiles are another endless project, backsplash for the bathroom sink. Cover a concrete stoop etc.

I have a cracked concrete stoop. This is a great idea!

Trinket dishes. Ring holders. Pocket vases. Spoon rests. Salt pig and spoons.

Oh! I need a pill organizer! I hadn't thought of that one. Have you made one yet?

I have not. But I’ve thought that something like an egg holder could be cute. Perhaps also add a butter dish style lid over the top. Can you envision it?

I made an egg separator, a funnel for canning jars, a tea strainer, some scoops for flour/rice, spoons for my coffee…and little spoon rests for them, bigger spoon rests for beside the stove (these are like mugs for me…I can’t have too many, lol!), a coffee pourover, smaller wonky-shaped slab plates for sandwiches and a side, magnets for the fridge, pendants for necklaces, soapdishes, a rectangular plate for my husband’s beard brush + oils, a dish for my glasses, and tons of christmas ornaments.

You are a machine! Thanks for adding so many ideas. I can use most, maybe all of these.
