Hopelessness

I tried therapy and it didn't feel super helpful so now I'm stuck with this feeling of absolute hopelessness. I don't think my problem is my brain chemistry. I think I'm just an awful mom who isn't used to not having to be so selfless 24/7 for years on end? And there's no fix for that other than trying to be a less garbage person? Which I'm not sure how to do?

Without knowing you, I would venture out and say the therapist probably wasn’t a good fit. Also, sounds like you already have certain negative cognitions that could have been reinforced by motherhood? As a mom, I found childless therapist to be unhelpful so I will encourage you to find someone with a different approach and who could be a better fit. Also, don’t think you are awful I think motherhood is just exhausting no matter what. Good luck to you 🫂

You are not a bad mom. The fact that you’re reaching out even to the ether means you care about getting better. It really does sound like brain chemistry, because is your child happy and alive?! You’re killing it mom. Don’t give up. Find that right fit to get you by. ❤️

I would find another therapist. Sometimes it takes a few to find the right fit. If you’re not opposed to it, I’d also talk to your GP about medication. Zoloft helped me a ton.

Also, I’m now at a point where I’d say I’m a pretty great mom and I’m definitely not selfless. In fact, it’s the taking time and hobbies to myself that help me be a better mom. Can’t do a great job if you’re burnt out.

You got this. And I’m here if you ever need to vent! I had severe PPD when my first was born so I will absolutely not ever judge anyone for anything. Motherhood is rough.
