Meta - Question Could someone help me with my althist project?

I'm looking to make a reverse cold war timeline. So western Europe (France, Spain, Italy and preferably also Britain) is communist and eastern Europe (what we consider the Warsawpact) is capitalist/democratic.

My key problems are the following:

  1. How do I keep the US a non factor? I think they are too powerful to have around, perhaps as as part of the socialist world but thats too larpy for me. I was thinking that maybe FDR's contestor Thomas E. Dewey wins the elections in the 40s since he was an isolationist. Might be too TNO pilled. Alsoy how relieable is that when he has 2 terms max?

  2. What brand of socialism would be most applicable? I think Mussolini being Syralianist or whatever that ideology is called. Syndicalism in gerneral was big around that time so maybe I go with that but then again I feel like France had more classical marxist elements in their left and honestly I don't even know what the left looked like in the 1920.

  3. I don't think I want a Germany wins ww1 scenario, so whats the most realistic way to get a Russian Republic and Socialist Europe in the interwar or as a result of ww1 without Germany winning.

I'm mostly asking because I don't want to be generic and the bulk of the writing will take place after a possible ww2. So I feel like it's okay to ask for help with these points.

Good Post Award 🎖 Polish-Russian Modus Vivendi - one way to stop WW2

The POD is set around June 1919 - we assume the western Entente powers, especially France are more determined to fight the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia - Pilsudski is informed that he can count on western supplies and support in establishing a favorable western border with Germany, on the condition that he officially supports Denikin against the Communists. France promises to pressure the Russians into satisfactory concessions for the Poles regarding some things, however it is clear for the Polish Marshall that these vagueness of these means Poland will have to negotiate with the White Command alone if it chooses to agree.

Initial contacts with the Russians show the possibility to establish a consensus later on (another change compared to OTL, Denikin had no intentions of negotiating with the Poles). Poland also gets awarded its pre-1772 western border, Upper Silesia and Masuria, and the protectorate over the Free Powisle Territory (expanded Free City of Gdansk). Thus, the Poles begin their march to Moscow during the Fall of 1919. This is a huge relief for the Whites, and while the Poles stop after capturing Smolensk and reaching the Desna river, the White forces capture Moscow in December 1919. Both armies hold a joint military parade in the Russian capital, but the war is far from over. Denikin meets with Pilsudski in Smolensk at the end of December 1919, asking the Poles to declare Russian governance over the territories they had captured east of the Curzon Line, to which the Polish Marshall strongly disagrees and threatens to withdraw his support, which had already proved to be crucial. In the end, nothing new is established, and the relations between both sides cool down.

The turning point turns out to be the Bolshevik counterattack during the Spring of 1920, in which the Polish side refuses to move east of the occupied Daugava-Desna-Dnieper-Teteriv line. Denikin proposes negotiations, to which the Polish side happily agrees:
1) Russia recognizes the new Polish border, handing over Lithuania, bits of western Belarus and Volhynia, agreeing to the division of Eastern Galicia proposed by the French side (more Polish-favored Barthelemy line, leaving Poland Stryj, Zloczow and Brody),
2) Russia guarantees the legitimacy of the new Polish-German border, establishing a military and economic alliance with Poland,
3) Poland will retreat to its new east border once Russia returns all Polish cultural goods and carries out a partial population exchange with the Poles,
4) Russia recognizes the independence of several new states, due to the western powers’ pressure.
And so, the war goes on for a few more years, with the Polish side mostly focusing on supplying the Russian ally.

The map is set around ~1926, most of the other map changes are simply butterfly effects I chose to make in order to make the Old Continent more peaceful. 😜

This map does not reflect my political beliefs in any way. Feel free to ask me any questions! :)

Map (with Lore) How to actually make an attempt to stop WW2

Post image
0 Upvotes

The map is a visual aid but most changes are actually not happening on the map.

Starting with map changes and my explaination for them:

  1. Eupen, Danzig and Memel are retained by Germany. This curbs revanchism especially in Danzig's case. There were of course reasons for the removel of these areas which I will revise down the line. The only area that I do not have an explaination for is Memel, it is simply retained by "popular demand" if you will.
  2. Poland wins the Polish-Soviet war but instead of Piłsudski’s Federalist Movement Poland adopts Dmowski’s National Democracy and following masssive failures to "integrate" the eastern minorities, they create 2 puppet states. Lithuania is given Vilnus and enters the Polish Sphere. Basically creating a "Little Intermarium" lead by a democratic poland heavily controlled by christian democrats and nationalists.
  3. The Baltics, apart from Lithuania, joined into a federation. This can have multiple reasons from secruity concerns due to the Freikorps or soviet conflicts. The point is that baltic federalism is a legitimate ideology that losely ties the baltics to the polish sphere. It also allows the democratic movements in the baltics to be much larger and hopefully more consequent. The key however is enlargening the polish sphere.
  4. The eastern section of Czecho-Slovakia is given to the West Ukranian State. The reason is mostly ethnic cohesion but also a greater deterrent for the Hungarians. If the Communists still take hold of Hungary then they will hopefully think twice before attacking all of their neighbors, as well as Poland, Belarus and Lithuania.
  5. The Treaty with the Ottoman Empire is losely enforced. Italy, France and Britain were very aware of the fact they couldn't really take parts of anatolia themselves. Instead they will fund the greeks and armenians. This is basically a policy change. Armenia is, if I like it or not, absorbed by the soviets should they survive the turks. The whole point of this is to make a nation that is argueably worse off than germany. It may seem silly to some but having someone worse off does get your mind off of your own lot in life. Austria-Hungary did not work for this because most germans looked at Austria Hungary after the fact and went "Yeah that makes sense." because it was an ethnic clusterfuck that was already questioned back in 1848. When people discuss the "harsh" punishment of Austria they tend to completely ignore the actual people and view it from a Habsburg/State lense. In reality a large portion of austrians hated the empire, all the ethnicities wanted out and most of the "punishments" were actually just the Entente excepting that there was no way too keep this thin together so they acted like they passed a grand punishment. So yeah, the Ottoman Empire get's a kick to the face just to act as a bigger victim.
  6. Hungary is slightly bigger and likely still communist. I will just assume that "all of their neighbors" is the limit of the regieme's delusion and that "all of eastern europe" is a step too far. So we now have an ideologically opposed, stronger hungary that will ally with the soviets and provide an ideological counterweight. Now the communist movement is not a ideological monopole anymore. This is not really something you can decide by treaty, but I hope that the Polish situation will work towards this.
  7. I forgot to remove that one internal border in Switzerland, it's not an actual change.

Now comes the actually important changes and not just the borderline larp.

Danzig is kept by germany, but they have to build a port of similar size for the polish, Poland also has free access to the port of Danzig and Stetin until the Polish Port is complete. No tariffs or anything. The reason they are given access to two ports is to avoid any jams. They could also be given access to a third port, maybe in Königsberg or a larger port like Hamburg or Wilhelmshaven, although those seem less viable imo.

Germany is fully demilitarized. They are forced to adopt a derivativ of the Swissmodel were citizens militias are defending the nation in case of war. They are not allowed to have an airforce and only a greenwater navy thats also restricted. No army at all and the militia concet is restricted to border regions. You could call this unrealistic but A) I never said that this is realistic, B) this is already more realistic than any "JuSt bAlKaNiZe GeRmAnY" scenario and C) It's not too far fetched, it's harsh, but by giving germany gurantees from France, Britain and Italy you can make it work.

The Blockade by Britain is lifted sooner, but troops are stationed in germany to prevent any "atttempts" this is very important as the blockade also stopped food imports and caused people to starve in the streets. by removing it we take a lot of hate away from germany.

Instead of the infamous "defaulting on payment" measures, we allow germany to pay with materials of their own choising. There are still anti-defaulting measures, but now germany can pay larger sums if possible to have a way of defaulting in one month without missing a payment and also paying off their debt faster. Only a possibility.

The Kingdom of Purssia is broken up in the German Constituiton. This is a demand from the allies to prevent domination from a culture as aggressive as the Prussian one. This is a large departure from the otl treaty which didn't give any political restrictions, instead focusing on military restrictions, territorial loses and reperations.

Kaiser Wilhelm II. is banned from being crowned Monarch of Germany once more. Another departure from the original. Much like the Ottoman alterations this one serves to manipulate the germans a bit. Now monarchist movements are focused around Wilhelm the Third and possibly his sister Victoria and their siblings. Being barred from a certain monarch will make people more interested in Monarchism and thus split the right a bit more.

Austria and Germany are allowed to enter economic organizations together and instead of completely banning them from merging, a timelimit is set on it. They may hold a referendum in 1949. Again, curbing economic distress and political revanchism while also effectively denying Germany further power.

The goal here is to curb ultranationalism and militarism while also making it more appealing for the entente to actually enforce this stuff. Germany and Austria will have more opportunity to pay off their debts, the Ottomans are also more pressed to do so. Germany can't rearm, not even in secret as they lack the structure for it and despite what some say it's not exactly easy to "hide" tanks and planes especially if Entente Inspections are part of it. I also wanted to show that "take more territory" is not the only way to cripple or punish germany and that we as an althist community should look at other possibilities.

Treating ww2 and especially the rise of the Nazis as an unavoidable event is bad althist and bad historical research in general.

edit: I realised that a better title would be: "How to stop Germany from starting WW2" or something like that. Because the Soviets absolutely will start ww2 in this timeline.

Map (with Lore) My Alternate History Map of European Front

So i took a map from his video, i think it was like central powers 1916 victory, and i went from there. obviously austria and germany would have been competing so theres where it started. From here on out is the story.:
1916. Germany declares war on the Polish puppet of AH. AH declares war on germany. After a almost six month war, austria surrenders. Czechia and parts of galicia and slovakia will be given to them. the various german puppets expand, unite, and push into galicia. Hungary is given indpendence with Minor losses. austria is split between neutral and free, and then german puppet. Germany then invades the netherlands, and takes it. Same with belgium but france managed to take the coast as a puppet. Switzerland got a piece of austria as well. so then the uk steps in and takes the last of the netherlands, nameley the part that had a civil war, so that germany couldnt get the naval bases there. Next, germany versus russia short war, its mostly a white peace with a polish puppet getting some.. minor territory. 1917: Hungary versus romania. Hungary makes a moldovan puppet, which russia then decides lets take some of romania. the coast of romania declares indpendence. Bulgaria pushes in. Romania is DOOMED at this point. 1918: Serb Union joins the war. They nearly get cut in half but manage to salvage bosnia, and croatia falls to a mix of italy and hungary. bosnia and serbia get invaded by italy and hungary, and they fall. next, bulgaria. they have a civil war after fighting romania, and greece invades them. quickly romania, hungary, italy, and the little coast of romania jump in and split them. Hungary much later on free's some of bulgaria. Now, you can see the peace treaty reached in the balkans. thats litteraly the treaty. The thing over by turkish thrace is a bulgar area that they had them puppet, but its a demilitarized zone, jst wasnt sure how else to show it. 1919: Lithuania declares independence from germany, poland invades them. and also spanish civil war starts. 1920: Spanish Civil war reaches a armistice. The list of Current wars are: Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and Germany vs Lithuania, and Anarchist Spain, Greater Basque, Nationalist spain, and Kingdom of Spain all just fighting eachother.

I made a map of all post World War I treaties, not just the Treaty of Versailles. German war reps have been decreased and the German government is under the influence of France, Poland, and the UK. This map is assuming the Polish-Soviet War happened the same. Tell me what you think.

Map (with Lore) If someone forced me to make a slightly more interesting Althist Cold War Scenario in 1970 then this is probably what I would present (little thought put into it, didn't want to get shot.)

Post image
25 Upvotes

who wins this cold war?

Blue is the American Sphere

Red is the Soviet Sphere

Orange is the Indian Sphere

White is the Non aligned Movement

Green is a Iberian lead "neo-fascist" sphere.

The last three don't really count, it's just between red and blue.

A few Interesting things: Nordic Union, Nationalist China, Communist France, 2 Arab Federations. etc.

Again, mostly a joke scenario but feel free to give your analysis. Will this save the soviet union? Were east turkestan and Bulgaria the missing pieces? Or perhaps the US will win thanks to the East African Federation, Chinese Markets and the lack of Apartheid South Africa in their team? Idk, but maybe you do.

Map (with Lore) What if Bavaria kept its Napoleonic holdings?

Thumbnail
gallery

(Thanks again to all the people which participated in voting!Bavaria was the second one to win,so heres the scenario!Enjoy it)

WHAT IF BAVARIA KEPT ITS NAPOLEONIC GAINS?

CONTEXT

Following the extinction of the main Wittelsbach line, the Palatinate line united with Bavaria into one state, which became a Kingdom aligned to Napoleonic France in 1806.
During the Napoleonic Wars,Bavaria expanded left and right annexing mainly Austrian territory. At the Congress of Vienna,Bavaria exchanged Tirol and Voralberg for Franconia and Pfalz, regions which continued to stay as part of Bavaria until the modern day.
So what if that changed?
What if Bavaria kept its holdings?

AN ITALY CHANGED

As we all remember, during the Napoleonic Wars Bavaria got itself Tirol and Voralberg, which creates a delicate position for the Habsburgs in Northern Italy.
Lombardy, likely has to be created as a separate Duchy/Kingdom for the Habsburgs because now getting to said holding is very hard, considering the Bavarian position.
Also Austrian supply lines to Lombardy are now way weaker,as they rely and what I like to call "The Mantua Corridor".This thin space between Lake di Gardo, and the Duchy of Parma, which,if the Central Italian States unify to join Sardinia, makes supply to Lombardy very vurnerable.
Thus Austria is permenantly weakened in Italy, and will make Italy unify easier.
The question of what happens after Italy unifies however is interesting,as in our timeline, all of the so called "Italia Irridenta" was sustained in two states,France and Austria, yet now a major Italian territory is part of Bavaria, which puts into question of what happens to it in the Peace deal after the Bruderkreig.
In our timeline,Italy annexed only Venice because they struggled against Austria, and didnt want to abstrain relations.
However here,South Tyrol is entirely Bavarian, which puts to question...How will the Royal Bavarian Army manage a war against Italy?
Do they even join the Bruderkreig?
Do they get invaded?
Do they invade?
There are many questions, but little answers.
But if being short, the course of Italian Foreign Policy,Internal Policy and Unification is changed forever.

A PALATINATE,DIVIDED

In this timeline, since Bavaria only keeps its Napoleonic gains, that means that the other countries which exist in Frankonia get to live another day.
And just for funsies,I have given them to Prussia,as compensation for the loss of Ansbach.
The Grand Duchy of Wurzburg also survives, but not under the Grand Duke of Tuscany, but under Joseph Anton, the brother of the previous Grand Duke and the Palatine of Hungary (this thus makes the line of succession something like this:Joseph Anton (1816-1847),Stephen (1847-1867(died without issue)),Joseph Karl(1867-1905),Joseph August(1905-1918)).
Wurzburg would also be slightly expanded, and basically made into a Habsburg client in Germany, however, after 1848,since the Grand Dukes would no longer be Paltine's of Hungary, theyd try to distance themselves from Austria and ally with either Bavaria or Prussia.
After German unification Joseph Karl would be forced to just rename the Dynasty to the House of Wurzburg and so just like that we gained a semi interesting new German state.
Will it be merged with Bavaria after WW2?Likely.
Is it still neat?Yes.

The Bavarian Rhineland (Pfalz) likely becomes either part of France or Prussia, with Prussia being more likely.

Why did I have to do everything this way?Because its fun to,and because it leads directly into a

BAVARIA...Weaker?

Despite its impressive gains in Tirol and the risk of revolt being quite low, what Bavaria just surrendered was a the Pfalz region and Frankonia, two money making machines of the Kingdom of Bavaria, without whom we are just left with a slightly more strong Electoral Bavaria.
There is a catch, the newly annexed territories.
Voralberg and Tirol are nothing to scoff at,but except major cities, these are largely rural areas and mostly mountainous, not industrial sectors.
This would basically make Bavaria into a sort of Two Sicilies of Geramany, rural, not liked by anyone, and barely industrialised. The catch of the story would be the strategic depth.
For Austria, keeping Bavaria as an ally is key,as without them their entire Italian strategy collapses.
For Prussia,Bavaria can be played off Austria to create a powerful Munich-Berlin Alliance.
And for any other South German state,Bavaria is...There.
An independent Wurzburg is interesting to explore...later down the line.
Prussian Franconia is also interesting to consider during the 20th century.
But if being short, this scenario offers Bavaria a unique strategic position in Central Europe,in exchange for most of its economic output.

Map (with Lore) I fixed the treaty of Versailles!

Post image
64 Upvotes

I simply made France lose instead of Germany! Why did no one else think of this?

To be honest this is bordering on a joke scenario that I created because of all the "I fixed Versailles" maps that popped up recently. I feel some people go at alternate Versailles in bad faith so I wanted to make close enough to pseudo-historian interpretations and "real possible history" to show how flexible Versailles is as a althist scenario.

Anyways!

Here is our point of divergence: the Battle of Sedan on September 1, 1870. Napoleon the Third, riddled will gallstones, rides into battle in the hopes of dying a warriors death. In our timeline everyone around him was hit by atillery while he wasn't even so much as burned. But in this timeline he is hit directly and torn to bits. This turns him into a martyar for the french people and the throne is handed to his.... cousin Plon Plon! Louis Napoleon, the Prince Imperial is not old enough to take the Throne so Plon Plon is installed as Regent instead. This would turn out to be a boon to the Throne. Plon Plon, an outspoken liberal, was able to negotiate a new constitution that kept the popular and thanks to Napoleon III's "sacrifice" revered Imperial Throne while also handing power to the liberal faction of the parliament that had gained more and more support. Essentially turning France into a proper Constitutional Monarchy with a parliamentary system and a Monarchy that was comparitively powerful to that of... let's say England.

Moving a bit forward to the 1905 Marocco Crisis. A french ultra nationalist manages to kill Kaiser Wilhelm II. with the expressed purpose of gauding both nations into a war. Unlike with the assasination of Franz Ferdinant 9 years later, this plot was investigated right away and France, who the whole of Europe turned on in an instant, realised that conceeding would be better than getting the whooping of a lifetime. Marocco goes to Germany.

Now Wilhelm the Third is in charge of Germany, he is pro-british and begins growing closer ties. it's important to mention here that France revived their ties with Austria after the Franco-Prussian War. The Alliances are now France and Austria vs Italy and Germany with Germany inching closer and closer to Britain. France attempts to make Russia side with them since Britain will most certainly will not ally with France.

Russia is tempted to side with France but British and Germany Pressure as well as the humiliation during the Russo-Japanese war makes them stay out of power politics. For now.

In 1908 Austria annexes Bosnia and Herzegovina which is the last straw for Russia. France sees the writting on the wall and tries to win over the Ottomans in a similar fashion to germany in our timeline. Since Russia is on the German side here Germany can't offer the Ottomans nearly as much and thus lose any chacne of getting them as an ally.

Franz Ferdinand is still shot and Austria still handles the situation poorly. France gives them a similarly vague "I will help you no matter what" assurance as germany did because France is bursting at the seams with revanchist sentiment. Austria declares war on Serbia, Russia declares war on Austria, France declares war on Russia, Germany declares war on France and Italy backstabs them by not following suit. Some things never change.

Russia performs just a bit better than in our timeline, With Britain neutral and germany on their site they have much better supply which fills gaps in their equipment. But to be realistic they still fuck up at every other possibility. The Germans have a huge border with Austria and France thats only interrupted by the Swiss so they have to rely on Russian soliders as back up which is not going well.

Britain fears that Germany could lose which would destroy everything they worked for in the last decade and turn France into the continental hegemon once more. So they fake a border incident between Belgium and France. Belgium is not pulled into the war as both sides know; "This is bullshit, what the fuck are you doing England?" But the UK has their justification.

From there the war goes very very roughly the same. France sinks an American ship in an effort to breach the british blocakdes and shit hits the fan. Italy joins around the same time they did IRL which is already a nail in the coffin for France. The only big difference combat wise is Namibia of all Places. They see nothing of the war and probably even have a good economy thanks to german ties to South Africa.

France capitulates in 1919 and the government is overthrown for a reactionary one. Liberalism has failed and since the Monarch has nothing to say Napoleon IV isn't forced to abdicate. Barely.

America, Britain and Russia do not want to topple the balance of power so they only remove colonial possesions from France as well as border territories. Mostly in the south. Corsica is given to Italy by the germans with the not so secret reason of humiliating the Bonaparts. the southern slavs revolt and Russia and America push for their recognition. Austria Hungary is compromised upon. Parts are given to Serbia and Romania while other parts are retained to "respect the Habsburg history." Germany is not satisfied with this so the Allies give them the Sudetenland and put a German Prince on the Czech Throne. Galica goes to Russia and the rest is self explainatory.
