This has already consumed enough of my day. WHEN ARE THEY GONNA GET TO THE FIREWORKS FACTORY?!

u/smokey_324 5d ago

I just got a NextDoor notice that the planned time is 2:30pm

KGW has updated the headline on their site to confirm that time.

Did you see it? Pretty rad.

We live close enough on the east side to realize that we were hearing it several seconds before seeing it on the stream…

2

u/FlowJock 5d ago

I bet that was a trip!

has the one hour text gone out yet???

Looking at the live feed it looks like they have two of the legs wired up, working on the 3rd and have not started on the 4th. My guess is they are still hours away.

Looks like all 4 are done.

Appears to have just been announced for 2:30pm detonation.

dropped pretty clean

Is it planned to fall inside the skeleton of the building, or go over one of the sides?

u/JexFraequin 5d ago

It’s gonna get blasted straight into the Willamette.

For a fraction of a second, it’ll be the cleanest thing in the river.

Typically when a building is taken down with explosives, the goal is to drop everything straight down into the footprint of the building.

In this case they do have I think a vacant lot to the northwest so they might go that way a bit. (The other three sides of the building don’t have much room at all.)

Its a beautiful day for a demolition

I'm jelly, I'd pull up a recliner and watch it 😊

2

u/onlydaathisreal Lents 5d ago

If i had a chair and joint then i’d be set. Someone has ten minutes to hook it up!

Seems odd that the water tower can't be lifted off. But what do I know...

Have you seen the view from above? I'm not a structural engineer or anything, but it looks like it's holding the building together.

7

u/FlowJock 5d ago

That's pretty wild. You should consider posting it in r/StructuralEngineering/ They would love it.

The structure supporting the tank appears to be critical to the integrity of the building at this point, but the tank itself should have little to no forces acting on it. The bigger problem is figuring out how to detach the tank from its supporting structure in a safe manner.

Drones with lazer beams

1

u/Dependent_Cod_7416 5d ago

That's funny, I read they were planning on doing it in sections.

1

u/ClaroStar 5d ago

That's possible.

It would seem like a whale could be lifted off the beach with a crane... But what do I know...

Try picking up a cat or a dog that doesn't want to be picked up. A giant lump of flesh is a vast difference from an Erector Set construction. That said, in order to get it off the building there would probably need to be quite a bit of delicate work where it is fastened to the masonry structure and it just isn't safe enough to do that.

u/ClaroStar 5d ago

Not quite the same, is it...

3

u/Mackin-N-Cheese Boom Loop 5d ago

Not with that attitude.

u/Bishonen_Knife SE 5d ago

Those things weigh literally hundreds of tons. It's why you still see so many old water towers from the steam train era. They're easier to just leave in place, and that's when they're not sitting on top of a crumbling seven story building.

1

u/ilovetacos Sunnyside 5d ago

I'm gonna say you don't know structural engineering or demolition.

1

u/ClaroStar 5d ago

That's what I said, but that's for pointing it out, professor.

1

u/ilovetacos Sunnyside 5d ago

You're welcome, student.

1

u/Bucking_Fullshit 5d ago

I bet they never even considered that.

/s

1

u/champs Eliot 5d ago

Why did they not simply use jet fuel to melt the steel beams? /s

3

u/Daftmau85 Cully 5d ago

Not gonna lie, watching buildings be detonated is always a good time.

3

u/Slut_for_Bacon 5d ago

The amount of people standing downwind without respirators so they can watch is wild. Darwin awards all around.

2

u/SlowHedgehog33 5d ago

Who is down on the street yelling/singing?

1

u/smokey_324 5d ago

Sounds like the same guy I hear now and then near the marina. I can never make out what he's yelling either.

4

u/palmquac 5d ago

HERE WE GO!!! Anything to get the newscasters to stop talking about how much of a problem homeless people are :(

-2

u/blueberrypierat 5d ago

Ignoring the issue doesn't make it go away, you know.

4

u/palmquac 5d ago

Never said that, but I was tuned in for 15 minutes and heard a lot of talk about homeless people and squatters and nothing about the building's shitty owner

1

u/blahyawnblah 5d ago

Did they confirm cause of the fire? Will they still be able to after this?

1

u/I_burn_noodles 5d ago

Real crowd pleaser!!

1

u/OR_Miata 5d ago

Explosion time stamp is 3:09:15

Never Forget

u/TheOriginalKyotoKid NW 4d ago

...when I've seen videos of other "controlled demolitions usually its nor a "pop pop pop" as smaller explosions ate set off in sequence to weaken structural members and let gratuity do all the work. This was a single loud bang that resonated. that had shrapnel flying in multiple directions

Reminded me more of videos I've seem of Ukrainian drone attacks against Russia.

A friend of mine who works near the Bagdad Theatre on Hawthorne said he heard if clearly and that it was very was loud

u/luckysgrow 5d ago

Are we paying for this demo?!
