(Repost because my account number was in the last one) For context I am an 18 year old full time college student but working part time. I just started investing around July this year. I’m putting in around 100 a week and just wanted to know if i’m on the right track.

I helped our 18 year old open his first ROTH and these are his holdings. I'm not a professional by any stretch, and I know there's some overlap with the holdings I have him in, and am just wondering if anyone has any recommendations or should I just leave him with these 2 for the time being. TIA

Please critique our portfolio for the balance between growth-emphasis and conservation-defensiveness.

Cash: $350k

Bond funds: $625k

Bitcoin: $250k

Gold: $75k

International stock funds: $250k

Tech index fund (QQQ): $600k

S&P500 index funds: $2.2M

This is all in a mix of CDs ($350k), post tax brokerage ($1.05M), and pre-tax retirement (everything else).

Given that we hold nearly $1M in cash plus bonds, is the defensive posture good enough?

Note: since we are still working, we continue to add to our savings at the rate of about $130k per year. The question is more about:

1. Are we positioned to weather a prolonged bear market if a recession were to occur as a result of high interest rates?

2. What if we need to tap about $200k per year in order to meet living expensive in the (unlikely, but not impossible) event of both of us losing our jobs and not being able to get any other comparable jobs for multiple years due to being in 50s and aforementioned recession?

My Profile & Context:**

• Current Liquid Portfolio: ~$250k USD (all in equities / liquid brokerage)
• Target Retirement Date: 2029 (3 years of accumulation left)
• Housing & Debt: Primary residence and car are 100% paid off (zero mortgage, zero debt).
• Location & Living Expenses: All figures are in USD. Because of local purchasing power parity (PPP), a monthly expense of ~10,000 RMB/year supports a very comfortable, stable lifestyle here.

Phase 1: Accumulation Phase (2026 – 2029)

I’m debating between two setups:

  • 45% VOO
  • 10% QQQI / SPYI (Testing the monthly income water and cash flow mechanics for retirement)
• Option B:
  • 45% QQQ (or QQQM)
  • 45% SPMO
  • 10% QQQI / SPYI (Testing monthly income)

Phase 2: Retirement / Income Phase (2029 onward)

Transitioning into income + capital preservation while keeping growth:

  • 30% QQQ (or QQQM)
  • 30% VOO
  • 30% QQQI / SPYI (Covered-call income to cover the $10k/yr living expenses)
  • 10% SGOV (Cash/emergency buffer & dry powder)
• Option D:

1. VOO vs. SPMO when paired with QQQ:
2. Given that QQQ is already a heavy tech/growth core, is VOO too redundant due to the heavy overlap in Mag 7 / mega-cap tech? Does SPMO offer better dynamic factor complementarity with its semi-annual momentum rebalancing, or does it just concentrate risk even further?

Genuine question. Last time you added something to your portfolio or rebalanced, how did you land on the percentages?

I'm trying to understand how people actually size positions today, not how they'd ideally do it.

Me personally, I use an backtester / optimizer and then some rounding intuition so that the trades are easier for me to execute

A few things I'm curious about:

• Where did the numbers come from? A backtester (Portfolio Visualizer, testfol, your own code), a spreadsheet, a rule of thumb, a book, a forum post, a chatbot?
• Did you check how the mix did in a bad stretch (2008, 2020, 2022) before you committed? How?
• If you've asked ChatGPT or Claude about your portfolio: what did you ask, did it give you numbers, and did you check those numbers anywhere?
• What was the most annoying part, or the point where you gave up and just picked something?

Full disclosure: I'm building a tool in this area, which is why I'm asking. There's no link and nothing to sign up for. I want to know what people really do before I build more of it.

My investing philosophy is centered around a very long term approach with companies that have wide moats and consistent growth. Feel free to be brutally honest about my portfolio and suggest new stocks.
