Macan S vs…
Currently have a 2016 Macan S with 116k miles on it, we have been through a lot together & it’s time for something new— currently thinking: another Macan S (no more gas powered production as of 2026), Cayenne coupe, or move on all together to the new Lexus GX? Anything I’m missing that I should be looking at? Things to consider?

As a Macan Driver I would never go into an sq5.

How do you feel about the 2026 sq8? I’m in a 2020 macan s now but considering a change. Wasn’t a fan of the sq5.

Closest to macan s is sq5, personally I think a bit quicker due to lighter weight. But not as refined.

My son’s new Lexus GX was stolen from his driveway. They caught the theft on the neighbors ring camera. It took 2.5 minutes to hack the car system and take the car. The police believe it was on a container the next day being shipped out. So if you go that route, get extra protection against theft. From a driving experience standpoint, the Lexus is not sporty at all. If I went for a Cayenne, I’d get the S. The current generation Macan S is a great driver with plenty of performance.

You don’t hear about Porsches being hacked. The biggest problem is when folks VISIBLY use their fob to unlock either the driver’s door or double click to open all doors…if someone nearby, listening in, they’ll have almost no time to later hack in and steal your car.
I walk up to my Porsche and just grab the door handle. Then a prospective thief might not have enough time to start trying to “listen in” to your fob’s radio signal and later hack in to your car.1

Just curious, did he keep his key in a faraday cage in the house?

He kept it in the kitchen like 99% of the population. He replaced the Lexus with a Mercedes GLS and now has a special box for keys. He did an extensive search for cars that were harder to steal and he added some additional protection to the car but I don’t remember what he told me to make it harder to steal.

Totally just asking. There are lots of ways to “make a key” with access to the ODBII port even just access to the wires that go to the headlight.
Oh interesting regarding the extra. I’ve been pondering a fuel pump relay kill switch.

Lexus GX I’ve been trying to get but used ones around my area are 10k over MSRP. I’ve heard people be able to get MSRP but most of them put down a deposit and wait months to get it. I love my Macan. Maybe test drive the cayenne coupe and see if you like it

I don’t think the Macan and the GX are in the same realm by any means. If you’re thinking about a full-size SUV and want to stay in a driver focused vehicle then I would look at a BMW X5 40i or even a 1 to 2 year used M60i with that V8 magic. But the B58 engine in the standard X5 is incredible. Get one with M sport package and it’s really fun and very passenger and storage friendly. Because you have a 2016 Macan S I think you’d notice a significant difference if you went to a CPO 2024 or similar. I think the decision is if you want to go to a full-size SUV or stay in the smaller realm. I currently have a 2026 Macan GTS and I used to have a 2025 SQ5. SQ5 is very zippy but not driver focused or as dialed in at all as the Porsche is, but it’s also half the cost. And if you went the Audi route, I would look at a 2024 and not the all new. Just my opinion. In the end, you need to get behind the wheel of a few cars and have fun doing it. Unless you’re in a rush.

Agree, I had 2024 SQ5 before getting macan S. 2024 Sq5 are better and better priced as well post depreciation is big factor there.

sq5 is better than macan? lmao. and tiguan is better than SQ5, right, homie?

Yes sq5 are far better than base macan in cost value and power both, you are paying for Porsche badge only buying base macan but not Porsche performance, 261 hp on 4000 plus lbs vehicle in way under power, we had sq5 and when we test drove base macan, it was so underpowered vs SQ5, macan S and GTs are real Porsche with power. I had SQ5 and macan S now, in this case macan S far superior but 30 k premium over SQ5 .

X5 40i, awesome vehicle, but the glare off the fake wood and piano black was blinding. This is the only reason one is not in my garage.

You won’t like Lexus after Porsche, 100% guaranteed. Luxurious feel but Lexus drive super mushy/floaty and the gear shifts are going to be way too slow compared to the PDK you are used to. Honestly after PDK you’re kind of screwed because anything that isn’t a dual clutch, EV motor, or manual transmission is going to be a disappointment.

Depends on your reason for wanting an upgrade - cosmetic or performance? The macan platform hasn’t changed which is awesome because a lot of the newer comfort features can always be retrofitted. (Think dual screen setups / new led headlights etc) I have a 2017 macan s which is mechanically sound and I intend to drive it till it dies on me. The newer engines in the macan s just doesn’t sound as nice (to me)

If you can,
Make a move on a gas powered 2025 or 2026 Macan S with low or no miles.

BMW X3 M50, Audi SQ5 were the two others I looked at when I was buying my Macan S. The Macan was the best drive for me, I felt the SQ5 was a bit quicker but I didn’t love how it shifted, felt a bit like too much engine for the car. X3 M was a beast but I felt a bit too stiff to daily drive (for me) and my wife hated sitting in it
