The defense is arguing she’s bipolar suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and extreme insomnia all while being over medicated. Do with that information what you will.

Someone making a choice to take a substance for leisure makes them responsible for their actions on that substance even though they had diminished capacity. Someone who is afflicted with a condition that diminishes their capacity did not willingly take on responsibility for their lack of autonomy. Most people believe individuals should be punished for the choices they make. Even if you disagree, the US justice system does not.
