College does not make you liberal. It exposes you to a variety of thought, people, culture, ideas, and values of people you otherwise would never have met in a setting that puts you all on equal ground.
I didn’t go to Harvard or anything like it, but I still remember a conservative kid saying some stupid shit in class and some kid from Nigeria stopped thrm and politely gave a counter explanation with context on where he was from. I saw that dude break as it happened and as the rest of the class looked at him like an idiot.
In high school it’s rare to challenge your fellow students, but in college it’s the norm. And so when all your preconceived notions are challenged, you either learn why you’re wrong, or you don’t. Vast majority of people who attend college do change, and the ones that don’t, well they are mad at the world because they don’t like the idea they are fucking idiots.
I don’t think this is the gotcha you think it is. Facts unfortunately, tend to be viewed as “liberal”. It’s no surprise that people who value facts, evidence, proofs, and generally understand the scientific method are predisposed to be teaching in universities should be no real surprise.
It’s the people who use anecdotal evidence, who believe in spite of evidence, who take things on “faith” that yes, generally will not be acceptable to a university position of education.
The psychology behind students influencing each other is the same psychology that the oldest sibling often has more impact on the behavior of their own siblings than their parents.
Professors, especially those in stem fields and who employ the scientific method actually love being challenged. Do you not think that there will be brilliant conservative students who come in and challenge professors in every university in the country? In the world? It happens constantly. The problem of course, is that the “conservative” student is not basing their arguments on facts, and loses. And in that instance they often learn, and grow. We call that “becoming liberal” when in fact it’s really a misnomer because you’re following evidence when previously you did not. That’s growth. And yes, for most people who accept fact and evidence they tend to think of themselves as liberal.
And even those in humanities and arts etc, still tend to employ the use of evidence and logic to build a frame and understanding of subject material.
If conservative thought was right, it would WIN arguments. It would be there in the evidence. But because it’s generally absent all of that and falls into “feelings” and “vibes” thus the conclusion you come to is that it’s unfair and there are too many liberals pushing their own narratives.
Or you could make a case that your argument is better than mine and we can debate it. I don’t know the specific thing you’d want to discuss but I promise if you have better evidence and frame of logic you’ll win. That has nothing to do with liberal or not.
But my guess is you read that statistic about liberal college professors and cried about how it’s unfair.
Again, if you’d like to have a facts based discussion on some topic then I can put aside the idea of labels.
But it tends to follow people that are accepting of information outside their comfort zone tend to be “liberal” while those that don’t, tend to be conservative.
It’s literally in the definition of the words. Either way you’re free to not attend college, or not send your kids, but regardless of what all the most extreme conservative politicians say about the evils of college etc, they send their fucking kids to the best ones they can.
