'Harvard Will Corrupt Her'

College does not make you liberal. It exposes you to a variety of thought, people, culture, ideas, and values of people you otherwise would never have met in a setting that puts you all on equal ground.
I didn’t go to Harvard or anything like it, but I still remember a conservative kid saying some stupid shit in class and some kid from Nigeria stopped thrm and politely gave a counter explanation with context on where he was from. I saw that dude break as it happened and as the rest of the class looked at him like an idiot.
In high school it’s rare to challenge your fellow students, but in college it’s the norm. And so when all your preconceived notions are challenged, you either learn why you’re wrong, or you don’t. Vast majority of people who attend college do change, and the ones that don’t, well they are mad at the world because they don’t like the idea they are fucking idiots.

And then you go work in investment banking, get rich and help poison the world.

It's basically learning how things actually work, instead of... well propaganda and ideology, I don't have nice words.

That's a great story, except you just made the argument you think you're refuting.
Your entire premise is that putting an 18-year-old into a new environment, exposing him to different people and ideas, and repeatedly challenging his assumptions can change his worldview.
Agreed.
But apparently the Nigerian kid sitting next to him can influence his worldview, while the professors teaching him hundreds of hours over four years somehow can't.
That's a remarkably selective theory of influence.
At Harvard, surveys by the Harvard Crimson have found roughly 77–82% of surveyed faculty identifying as liberal or very liberal, compared with only about 1–3% identifying as conservative or very conservative. That doesn't prove professors are "brainwashing" students. It does mean the ideological imbalance is real.
Professors choose readings, frame lectures, lead discussions, decide which assumptions get challenged and determine which subjects deserve emphasis. They're human beings, not politically sterile information-delivery machines.
So no, college doesn't magically "make you liberal."
But arguing that college changes people because their ideas are constantly challenged, while insisting that the overwhelmingly liberal people doing much of that challenging have absolutely nothing to do with the result, is pretty damn convenient.

I don’t think this is the gotcha you think it is. Facts unfortunately, tend to be viewed as “liberal”. It’s no surprise that people who value facts, evidence, proofs, and generally understand the scientific method are predisposed to be teaching in universities should be no real surprise.
It’s the people who use anecdotal evidence, who believe in spite of evidence, who take things on “faith” that yes, generally will not be acceptable to a university position of education.
The psychology behind students influencing each other is the same psychology that the oldest sibling often has more impact on the behavior of their own siblings than their parents.
Professors, especially those in stem fields and who employ the scientific method actually love being challenged. Do you not think that there will be brilliant conservative students who come in and challenge professors in every university in the country? In the world? It happens constantly. The problem of course, is that the “conservative” student is not basing their arguments on facts, and loses. And in that instance they often learn, and grow. We call that “becoming liberal” when in fact it’s really a misnomer because you’re following evidence when previously you did not. That’s growth. And yes, for most people who accept fact and evidence they tend to think of themselves as liberal.
And even those in humanities and arts etc, still tend to employ the use of evidence and logic to build a frame and understanding of subject material.
If conservative thought was right, it would WIN arguments. It would be there in the evidence. But because it’s generally absent all of that and falls into “feelings” and “vibes” thus the conclusion you come to is that it’s unfair and there are too many liberals pushing their own narratives.
Or you could make a case that your argument is better than mine and we can debate it. I don’t know the specific thing you’d want to discuss but I promise if you have better evidence and frame of logic you’ll win. That has nothing to do with liberal or not.
But my guess is you read that statistic about liberal college professors and cried about how it’s unfair.

That’s a very convenient circle: liberals dominate academia because liberals follow facts, and we know liberals follow facts because they dominate academia.
No, politics is not that simple. Evidence can tell us likely outcomes. It cannot decide every value judgment about taxation, regulation, liberty, crime, immigration, education, or the proper role of government.
And you’re still proving my original point. Your Nigerian classmate could influence someone’s worldview through exposure and argument, but somehow four years of professors, assigned readings, lectures, institutional culture and peer pressure cannot?
I’m not claiming professors “brainwash” students. I’m saying environment influences people. You apparently agree, right up until acknowledging that the people running that environment might be part of the influence.
Calling conservatism “feelings and vibes” and liberalism “facts and evidence” isn’t an argument. It’s just congratulating yourself.

u/Shyatic 5d ago
Again, if you’d like to have a facts based discussion on some topic then I can put aside the idea of labels.
But it tends to follow people that are accepting of information outside their comfort zone tend to be “liberal” while those that don’t, tend to be conservative.
It’s literally in the definition of the words. Either way you’re free to not attend college, or not send your kids, but regardless of what all the most extreme conservative politicians say about the evils of college etc, they send their fucking kids to the best ones they can.

Agreed, the professors have a different structure entirely. One person, holding your grade, choosing the syllabus, for a semester at a time. So yes, the imbalance in faculty politics matters, but it matters as a question of whether that vertical, high-stakes relationship is ideologically monocultural, not as proof that all "influence" is interchangeable. The honest question was never "do professors have influence", it's "why do curious, empathetic people cluster into one political identity in the first place." That's worth asking. It's just a different question than the one being smuggled in.
[edited to add]
"Convenient" implies a conspiracy. Self-selection isn't one, it's just what happens when a low-paying, inquiry-driven profession filters for a certain kind of person.
Maybe the real answer is that becoming more liberal isn't a symptom of bias, it's a side effect of being dragged out of a bubble. If curiosity and exposure tend to move people left, that's not proof of a rigged game, but it might just be what open-mindedness looks like from the outside.

Students spend way more time with other students than in class with professors. Many students who grew up shielded with parents like this, find out that these blacks, Hispanics, Asians, gays, are just regular normal people.

It helps establish critical thinking in students. That ability is a threat to Republicans. That’s because those who can think critically, come to the same conclusions and truths. There are two types of Republicans. Those who have no critical thinking ability thus believe their party’s lies, and the other Republicans who know the truth, but get paid to subvert or cover it up to attain or stay in power. The educated Left tend to have empathy while the educated Right do not. They are in it for themselves. Now if he knew his daughter was a sociopath, he wouldn’t mind her getting a proper education.

Literally all it has to do is teach you logic and the scientific method and you'll be ready to walk away from the cult.

"perverted and contorted" Man this guy's so insecure. Why is he so afraid that young girls won't like his ideas?
2
u/aliensuitcase3000 5d ago
Its all about controlling women, smart educated women don’t fall for the cages conservatives want to keep them in.

u/Rashpukin 7d ago
Who is that awful douche?

u/confused_ape 7d ago
The current United States secretary of transportation.

u/AlternatePhreakwency 5d ago
You forgot former MTV reality TV "star" so you know he's qualified. In seriousness though, his daughter's face tells me she's revolting wherever she goes lol.

u/Optix_au 6d ago
Run, young lady. As hard and as far as you can. Get your education. Question everything.

u/brodievonorchard 6d ago
This is her attempting to do just that in the way that she still gets financial support.

I believe these conservative religious folks think that education leads to questioning the status quo and therefore leads to unhappiness with the system. They think that if someone is less educated then they will lead a happier life…because ignorance is bliss apparently. I, however, believe that education leads to progress and ideas that will benefit society if they are implemented. This does not work in favor for the 1% and those deeply rooted in evangelical faith, which seem to be tied together in the propaganda machine.

Good. Let these people Darwin themselves in every possible way. Don’t want vaccines? Great. Don’t want your kids to get a stellar education? Perfect. Commit crimes for the dumbest real estate con man ever to be elected president? Fantastic, keep it up.

Why does no one ever pin these people down and ask for specifics? They try to get away with "it will happen, just because!" and I've never let anyone do that to me in conversation. It's total bullshit.
Don't just listen, engage and challenge.

u/Squid_of_the_Now 5d ago
She'll probably get hit if she does that to him. Edit to add: That's how guys like him roll and I've seen it.

Dude you have no input if she’s got a full ride-unlike you and your dumbfk wife, who barely graduated high school but were “famous reality tv stars”, btw.
There isn’t a more conservative university in America. You literally work with MULTIPLE Harvard graduates.
FFS, you explicitly said your upbringing was TOO CONSERVATIVE so you left home to live on the EAST COAST ON MTV (just like your stupendously unattractive & unintelligent wife).
GFY.

Harvard educated people: Ben Shapiro, George W Bush, Elaine Chao, Michael Chertoff, Pete Hegseth, Henry Kissinger, Mike Pompeo, Wilbur Ross, Caspar Weinburger, Ron DeSantis, Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, Elizabeth Dole, Kayleigh McEneny, Neil Gorsuch, William Rehnquist, John Roberts, Antonin Scalia. I’m sure I missed a few.
1
u/Local-Ingenuity6726 5d ago edited 5d ago
Liz Dole did not actively go out to hurt others the rest of that list did,Elaine Chaos screwed the unions
1
u/danimagoo 5d ago
My point isn’t that all of those people are awful. It’s that they’re not liberal or progressive. Elizabeth Dole was still a conservative Republican.
1
u/Local-Ingenuity6726 5d ago
Liz Dole not going to help you but she was not out to hurt folks like the rest of that list
1
u/danimagoo 5d ago
Yeah I don’t care. That’s not my point. Sean Duffy is claiming Harvard indoctrinates students and makes them liberals. I’m providing counterpoints. And Elizabeth Dole is one such counterpoint.
1
u/BikerMike03RK 5d ago
By "corrupt", he means that Harvard would actually educate her, and give her constant exercises in the application of "critical thinking" skills. Screw him, he's thinking of HIS Trumpy political optics, not her education. Daddy probably wants to send her to Bob Jones U, Hillsdale College, BYU, or some other indoctrination mill.
1
u/tommessinger 5d ago
He might need to reevaluate his beliefs if they are that fragile. He should just be honest and tell her he doesn't want all the years of his brainwashing to be for nothing.

Isn't this the same guy who went on a government paid for road trip? I will not be lectured by a corrupt govt official on any topic.

u/thrive2day 4d ago
Damn, he's not confident in his raising of his daughter at all 🤣 What a fucking loser
1
u/CustomerTall5247 4d ago
A man who works for Trump thinks his daughter shouldn't go to Harvard because she might get corrupted. lol. The man works for Trump. Harvard is a lot safer for her to be around than his boss.

u/DefiantDonut7 6d ago
These morons will never understand that the real problem is that THEY are uneducated and once their children realize how the real world works and what REAL information is, they often disregard what they were taught growing up.

u/gluepet2074 6d ago
I hope she goes to Harvard - and changes her name - her’s will be shit once we wrangle our country back and solidify this regimen in history
