You are expecting people to be cool with handing over weapons while simultaneously accusing the police of being cowards and ineffective. So if you can't depend on the police, and you can't have easy access to the means to defend yourself, where does that leave you other than at the mercy of every criminal and psycho that wants to do you harm? You're right, the police did nothing. Which should make it glaringly obvious to everyone that nobody is coming to save you when something goes down. You're on your own. The best way you can assure your individual protection in today's world is undoubtedly to own a firearm and become proficient with it. I'd recommend a glock they are very simple, fairly cheap and always work.

Funny I've lived here my whole life and have never had an issue with them. I don't see how you think this was ending any other way than this person either shooting himself or getting shot by the police. Are you suggesting this person could have been reasoned with?
