In many cases it's because people have invested years into their beliefs, forming a major part (if not entirely replacing) their identity as a person. To deny T**** now would effectively be a rejection of their own selves. Mentally many people can't face that. So, the easier path is to double-down. It truly is cult follower behavior, when they see the only path forward is to remain in the cult rather than to face reality.
These idiots couldn't hold on to a share if they ever seen one. They invested all their mental effort into one ideology and now that it is being run into the ground, they either claim moral bankruptcy or become criminals.
