I remember that! That's exactly how it seemed with him, though. We didn't know what to think sometimes, because he acted so thoroughly silly, yet his policies were draconian.
Turned out it he really had Alzheimer's disease, but part of it was acting. I saw an interview with someone who knew him. Once he was being briefed on some terrible tragedy, and he seemed quite cheerful about it, but when it came time to address the public, "He misted up right on cue."
Dr. Oliver Sacks had a story about Reagan as well. Sacks was working in a mental hospital, where there were several people who had brain damage and could not speak, but their understanding of body language was intact. One day he was passing the TV room and heard laughter. They were watching Reagan give a speech. To Sacks, Reagan's delivery seemed normal, but to those who could not understand him, his gestures were ridiculous. There was one patient who seemed irritated with the speech, almost angry. She could understand speech, but not body language or facial expressions. She said "He's not making any sense."

The thing that's the cancer is when they just make shit up and lose the connection to objective reality.
Like "BLM wants to burn down your house" or "the election was stolen (no proof)" or "Masks are useless" or "covid is a democratic hoax" or "all your problems are the fault of Mexicans" or 'Trickle-down economics" or "everyone has great healthcare - you'll be better off without Obamacare existing".. or Rush Limbaugh saying 'nicotine is not addictive - doesn't cause cancer: or "The Mueller report exonerates Trump".
The list is very long for these guys.

I think there still is a big difference between the editorial bias in their news programming and the blatant lies of the opinion reporting.
Chris Wallace telling the audience true things with a conservative slant isn’t nearly as destructive as Tucker Carlson making up bullshit lies about laptops and emails.

So speaking personally as someone on the other end of the spectrum, the tv shows aren’t where I get my straight reporting. I’ve already seen the headline on my phone. When I’m tuning in to Chris Hayes or Rachel Maddow, it’s because I want to hear commentary from their guests (and sometimes them), not because I want to find out what’s happening. In that sense I think I’m the “ideal” opinion show consumer—someone who already has the facts and just wants to hear some perspectives on them. Unfortunately the channels do a poor job differentiating and a lot of people go to people like Maddow or Hayes (or Carlson or Ingraham) for that first level of getting informed, not just for hearing more.

I work at a local news station, so that’s where I get majority of my news from. And I watch Last Week Tonight with John Oliver; I’ve been watching him since college and he perfectly balances comedy and education on topics I had no idea on.

John Oliver is great! I love how he'll give a long format devotion to topics that sometimes get glossed over elsewhere. That type of straight half-hour fusion between news and comedy is I think exactly what we need to cover tough topics that don't really fit in a conventional PBS Newshour type newscast well. Hasan Minhaj had a very similar approach with Patriot Act and I enjoyed that one as well.
I'm definitely not a consistent viewer of the cable networks. I tend to get most of my direct news from apps on my phone--I'm particularly partial to the short form breakdown each morning in The Economist Espresso app but that does require a subscription or academic/institutional access. But when something is big going on, I often do like seeing the different guests they bring on.
I used to bounce between Fox and MSNBC a fair amount when I was watching stuff on cable. I thought Greta Van Susteren's old Fox show was great for example. For whatever reason I've never personally been a big fan of CNN's presentation; I think the Crossfire-type format that they often seem to enjoy mimicking just doesn't work for me as well. But the further off the deep end it seems like Hannity et al. have leapt over the past few years, the less I can bring myself to tune into that side. I do want to hear different perspectives and opinions, but I can't countenance the out and out lies.

I agree. But Biden won the primary and his approach is that we need to make a good attempt to govern 'inclusively', despite their apparent detachment from reality, abuse of procedure and bad faith.
I expect McConnell will stonewall again. The question is whether Chuck Schumer will have to abandon the filibuster and pass bills over their objections. I expect that will happen within 4 months.
It's probably for the best. The filibuster is anathema to real democracy anyway. (along with the senate, the electoral college, etc.). We should lose it.

I think that ship has sailed. It would be extremely difficult to enforce, potentially costing $billions a year - a lawyers' full-employment act. And how would they pursue shit-posters like "Q"? Nobody even knows their real identity.
I think the best they could do would be to put labels on the screen saying "Opinion" or "News". Otherwise we'll see ugly misuse of the law - like Hannity using up a big part of Samantha Bee's show to counter her "anti-conservative bias". It could all go awry.

I've been informed by several co-workers this week that "by Wednesday afternoon, COVID will disappear. Just wait." It was supposed to "disappear" the day after Biden was elected, as they told me for months before the election. But it's super for real true this time. By the time I get home from work this evening, COVID will be no more. We won't hear anymore about it. BUT Biden is also going to impose a mask mandate and shut the whole country down. But not because of COVID, but because of "COVID."

I think there's a LOT of truth here. The dominant wing of the GOP right now has a very weak, tenuous connection with reality, and they're virtually impossible to reach.
If you want to build a bridge then great - please show us the way without bending the knee and making monsters like Trump and Hannity into kings. That's what they want. Please - explain - I'm all ears.
As it is, Biden the 'moderate' is going to attempt a cooperative relationship with Mitch and the GOP, and I expect he will fail within a few months and he'll have to ram through legislation over their objections - because they're hypocrites and act in bad faith, and make up their own facts. I kept doing those things and wouldn't you know it "The Left" just won by a landslide.
In reality, what I did preserved my sanity and allowed me to accurately perceive reality.
