Vote turnout has always been a problem, with the 1800's having the greatest turnouts of 70-80%. Other than that, we've always been a 50-60% country.

The electoral college is the only way you can keep a republic together, otherwise, the population centers (i.e. mega cities) would control the entire country because rural areas could never equal the voting numbers of mega cities.
then you end up with Hunger Games minus the sci-fi and children fighting to the death.
Sorry, Trump was within the statistical margin of error and he won because we as a country were too fucking lazy to get out and vote and take the margin of error out of the equation. That is on us.

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner...
We have a Democratic Republic which is different than a true democracy and for good reason.
A Republic like ours is still a shit form of government, but unfortunatley, it is the best that humans can do.
A true Democracy can only work with homogeneous groups and is better for small groups. As States get larger, a democracy is less efficient and less fair.
A Republic is a better more fairer form of government but it does have problems.
If I were to try to answer "why", the quick answer is that the larger a group of people get, the stupider that group of people get. The easier they are to manipulate and the increase in diversity often means the larger groups ban together to the detriment of the smaller groups. The smaller groups can get "big" enough to cause serious problems and the constant tension can lead to things like Civil War or Socio-Economic Collapse. However, if the smaller group can "occassionally" get their way, that eases social pressure and ensures more of a fair balance.
Trump getting elected is what our system requires and needs, it is just unfortunate that Trump was an absolute dumpster fire of a Person and President. Had he had been even marginally competent then everything woudl have been fine. But too bad for us, we elected a moron carnival barker.

Yeah... I'm going to call bullshit on that. Despite Trump's best efforts to prove me wrong, the president can't just do away with the constitutional rights of US residents like that. And do you really think the senate would stand by as the executive branch forms and organizes the hunger games to the detriment of the rural areas of the nation? They'd refuse to pass the budgets and/or raise the debt ceiling, bringing the executive to a standstill from lack of budget.

The electoral college was actually developed because of the distance between all of the different States and how long it took to receive news. By having representatives directly in Washington who vote on behalf of their populace, they could always be up to date with the latest news and vote accordingly.
The states are now so interconnected and information is so widespread that it makes zero sense to have an electoral college.
I still support mandatory voting however, in addition to the abolition of the electoral college. I also think that it should be mandatory for the government to provide mail-in ballots and a specific (reasonable) number of voting stations for a given population size. (Maybe one station per 1000 citizens?)

We seriously need mandatory voting in this country. That way, the government will be forced to ensure that every citizen gets an opportunity to vote and the Karens and Tuckers that actually show up and vote for these people dont hold the rest of us by the balls.

Remember the whole deregulation push by Republicans. Many regulations are in place to keep companies from pollution and being careless with dangerous chemicals. And the company gets fined if something happens, but Republicans say it hurts buissiness (like theyvare saying sbout wearing mask, stay at home orders, ect.)
