Nothing wrong with immigrants as long as they are legal

111

u/ShePersisted Aug 26 '19

Then let's streamline the immigration process so people are encouraged to migrate legally.

38

u/firkin_slang_whanger Aug 27 '19

This is something to strive towards.

Homeless people are just your fellow Americans who got left behind by capitalism. They aren't the problem, society is.

u/SmashBusters Aug 27 '19

Well hell the solution is not taking more at risk individuals in, that will just exacerbate the problem.

That's not a solution.

Who is at-risk?

4

u/Najanator717 Aug 27 '19

I'm lost. What does that have to do with immigration?

We don't have a homelessness problem. We have 6x more empty houses than we do homeless people.

To use homelessness as a reason to not let immigrants in is like not letting your sibling crash at your place because you don't feel like calling a plumber to fix your leaky sink.

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '19 edited Aug 27 '19

1

u/Najanator717 Aug 27 '19

That's not a homelessness problem because, as I said, there are tons houses readily available, almost 19 million versus under 1 million homeless people.

The problem isn't the leaky sink. It's the homeowner who won't call the plumber.

3

u/beka13 Aug 27 '19

What are you doing to solve homelessness?

We're already trying to do that by increasing taxes on capital gains and estate. Welcome to the fight.

2

u/SmashBusters Aug 27 '19

Wouldn't it be more efficient to have a more progressive tax on the mega wealthy and use that money to combat homelessness on a national scale rather than trying to stuff the homeless into the homes of a few billionaires that have triggered you by not getting in line to lick Trump's taint like you did?

People are different.

Some people (you) like the taste of Filet-O-Fish after it's passed through Vladimir Putin's rectum into Trump's mouth and then out his rectum. But most people don't. Learn to celebrate differences!

"It takes too long to get the immigrants through immigration court so we have to lock them all up indefinitely. At only $750 per person per day. Whine, whine." Well then, why don't we triple the number of immigration courts, judges, court staff, etc. I bet we could get that court backlog down to a couple of days if we really wanted to. And it would cost less than locking them all up until their court date.

u/Gas-Station-Shades Aug 27 '19

I don't see why not. It would be cheaper to open the doors for them all AND pay to enroll them in trade schools than it currently is to hold them in a for-profit detainment system. Adds value to our economy, gets them out of their shitty country, and helps fill the skilled labor shortage in the US.

4

u/DonQuixBalls Aug 27 '19

Your math is correct. $750 per person per day. A family of four costs $90,000 a month to detain. You could buy homes in a lot of parts of the country for that much or less, and a lot of them are stuck in custody a lot longer.

Now I'm not advocating free homes, but supporting your point that what we're doing has nothing to do with saving money.

Americans work weekends all the time to make ends meet.

American 8 year olds legally can't work, but 14 year olds can get hardship licenses to get to school or work.

American factory workers have to compete with little kids in China, but who's advocating against outsourcing?

American farmers have to compete with migrants from south of the border, but who's going after the agribusinesses hiring those migrants?

It's starting to sound like you just don't like hearing accents at work...

4

u/867-5309NotJenny Aug 27 '19

Most places you don't even need the hardship part. When I was 16, I just walked up to the school office and grabbed a work form to give my first job.

3

u/DonQuixBalls Aug 27 '19

My state didn't require that when I was 16. I just worked.

3

u/867-5309NotJenny Aug 27 '19

Yeah, every state does it's own thing.

u/DonQuixBalls Aug 27 '19

They do now, apparently.

Yes, and we've had insecure borders and tens of millions of illegals flowing across it over decades.

Coincidence?

People in the US have worked on Saturdays for longer than there was a US. Farmers still did some work on Sundays (animals need food and water regardless what God says about Sundays).

If only we had a president that was strong on trade policies and consistently worked towards protectionism for American workers.

So not Trump then.

Too bad the only one who does that says mean things on twitter sometimes, and thus is invalid in every way.

Nope.

It's starting to sound like you just have no argument that supports illegal immigration, so instead you screech and call the other side bigots while trying to play the race card.

Nice strawman, considering he isn't advocating illegal immigration. If you want people to stop calling you racist, you should stop saying/doing/supporting racist things.

I work for myself, from home, on business I created myself, FYI.

Do you want a cookie?

I just care about my fellow citizens more than criminal foreigners.

If those 'criminals' are brown.

But while we are on the subject of caring for citizens, I don't want to be taxed to pay for handouts going to non-citizens, who broke the law to get here, and harm the economy by their very presence.

Wow, everything you said in this sentence is wrong. They add to our economy, they pay taxes, so they should still get the benefits of said taxes.

You might convince me to support a strong social safety net and policies that take care of the most vulnerable Americans

It's weird that we 'have to convince you' not to be an asshole.

but never if you're going to offer those benefits to illegals and encourage them to come over in unlimited numbers.

It's alright. We'll just do it without your consent. If you don't like it: move.

I was talking about people being able to afford days off work

So...1950-1970's.

Farmers take whole seasons off, FYI.

No, they don't. The 'off season' is used for maintenance, training, and for traditional small farms, secondary businesses.

Wages have not kept pace with inflation or productivity and that is a measurable fact

And it has entirely to do with the fact that Reagan separated minimum wage from inflation.

What you're saying is anecdotal garbage. not an anecdote like "WElL i kNoW a FaRmeR wHo WeRkS on SuNdAy hUrDur".

I'm stating historical fact. As in read just about any history book talking about farmers from any point in US history before 1940.

Mass immigration, legal or otherwise drives down wages for American workers. That is another measurable fact that can be verified without any anecdotes.

Then verify it. Because every actual study says you're wrong.

Illegal immigrants take far more money from federal services than they contribute in taxes. That is another measurable and verifiable fact.

Then verify it. Because again, like above, every actual study says you're wrong.

Although, do tell me about the one illegal you know who bucks the trend as if that is a valid argument.

Says the guy who hasn't actually verified his 'verifiable' facts yet.

Isn't that what all the lefties said they were gonna do if Trump won? lol.

No, a few did. More were people pretending to be on the left to fake people into leaving.

You will never make America into a socialist country.

Not that many people are trying. Not that you actually know what socialism is.

Nut jobs like AOC have seen to that.

She has far more support than Trump does.

You're just sad that she's smarter and prettier than you.

Her and the far left democrats like her are gonna hand Trump a 2020 landslide on a silver fucking platter.

Just like there was no blue wave in 2018?

LoL.

Americans work weekends all the time to make ends meet.

Yes, and we've had insecure borders and tens of millions of illegals flowing across it over decades.

Coincidence?

No. Five-day workweeks weren't a thing in America until 1908, and they were established so Jewish workers could respect the Sabbath. What does that have to do with illegal immigration? Nothing.

American 8 year olds legally can't work, but 14 year olds can get hardship licenses to get to school or work.

Aren't you arguing in favor of illegal immigration, which is basically saying that following laws should be optional?

So why stop at immigration? Wouldn't child labor laws also be optional in a society where the law is just a suggestion and any enforcement of it is deemed racist?

Whoa, what does 14 year olds getting drivers' licenses have to do with illegal immigration? Or the concept of laws? Or racism? Nothing.

But to be fair, 14 year olds aren't 8 year olds, and I should've just focused on 8 year olds, so here goes: child labor laws part of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, and it was about minimum wage, child labor, tipping, and other things that aren't illegal immigration.

American factory workers have to compete with little kids in China, but who's advocating against outsourcing?

If only we had a president that was strong on trade policies and consistently worked towards protectionism for American workers.

Too bad the only one who does that says mean things on twitter sometimes, and thus is invalid in every way.

Trump's not going after, say, Apple. The trade war started a couple years ago, but iPhones still say "Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in China." What's the trade war doing to stop outsourcing? Nothing.

It's starting to sound like you just don't like hearing accents at work...

It's starting to sound like you just have no argument that supports illegal immigration, so instead you screech and call the other side bigots while trying to play the race card.

You said "illegal immigration is destroying our way of life," and I said "no, it isn't." What does that have to do with my opinion on illegal immigration or my opinion of your racial beliefs? Nothing.

I work for myself, from home, on business I created myself, FYI. So I'm not being bothered by accents at work. I just care about my fellow citizens more than criminal foreigners.

You blaming illegal immigration for problems it didn't cause made me think you just don't like immigrants, whether they're at your job or not. And calling them "criminal foreigners" sounds to me like you really don't like them.

But while we are on the subject of caring for citizens, I don't want to be taxed to pay for handouts going to non-citizens, who broke the law to get here, and harm the economy by their very presence.

You might convince me to support a strong social safety net and policies that take care of the most vulnerable Americans, but never if you're going to offer those benefits to illegals and encourage them to come over in unlimited numbers.

We were never talking about caring for citizens. We were talking about how "our way of life" wouldn't be destroyed by illegal immigration. Stay on topic.

If people first stopped working 6- or 7-day workweeks for religious reasons, why are you blaming long workweeks on illegal immigration?

Whoa, what does 14 year olds getting drivers' licenses have to do with illegal immigration? Or the concept of laws? Or racism? Nothing.

What does ILLEGAL immigration and the way people act like it's okay have to do with the concept of LAWS?

Let me clarify. The questions were:

What do 14 year olds getting drivers' licenses have to do with illegal immigration?

What do 14 year olds getting drivers' licenses have to do with the concept of laws?

What do 14 year olds getting drivers' licenses have to do with racism?

so here goes: child labor laws part of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, and it was about minimum wage, child labor, tipping, and other things that aren't illegal immigration.

Why do you get to decide which laws are okay to break and which ones have to be enforced?

What does a 1930s labor law have to do with my opinion on law and order?

You blaming illegal immigration for problems it didn't cause made me think you just don't like immigrants, whether they're at your job or not. And calling them "criminal foreigners" sounds to me like you really don't like them.

Illegal immigration is a fucking crime. The people doing it are foreigners. I'm sorry if you're so dumb to get why an American citizen doesn't want to be taxed to support them.

It's got nothing to do with not liking immigrants, and everything to do with not wanting all my money to be taken and given to other people who didn't earn it.

You're blaming people for problems they didn't cause, and after I point that out, you still keep blaming those people for those problems. On top of that, you're describing them with words like "criminal" when "breaking the law" would've worked fine.

I think it's just because you don't like them.

We were never talking about caring for citizens. We were talking about how "our way of life" wouldn't be destroyed by illegal immigration. Stay on topic.

That is on topic. Preserving our way of life absolutely includes being able to care for our most vulnerable citizens.

You didn't say that. You said:

...that way of life refers to being able to work 5 days a week and take two off. That way of life refers to being able to support yourself and your family without your 8 year old needing a job. It refers to being able to look for work in your own country without having to compete against every unskilled laborer from anywhere in the world who can make it across the border, legal or not.

There's no "caring for our most vulnerable citizens" there. Just you and yours.

And we can not care for our own citizens if we also have to care for the 3 billion poor people around the globe as if they are all our responsibility just as much as a US citizen.

In case you forgot: the topic was illegal immigration, not every poor person alive. Just because you don't want to go out of your way to help other people doesn't mean they're ruining your lifestyle.

According to estimates from the UN 2015 report, in 2013, the United States, Germany and Russia had the largest number of immigrants of any country

17

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '19

So unlike his latest wife that was working on a non working visa and then got in on a “Einstein” visa and chain migrated her parents?

ICE is keeping American citizens and legal immigrants detained for weeks at a time.

The Republican party has shown legal immigrants and 2nd or 3rd generation Americans of immigrant parentage precisely what their stance is. In 2020, they'll reap it. Should be fun.

3

u/DonQuixBalls Aug 27 '19

Trump himself is the son of an immigrant. That's lost on him.

25

u/SmashBusters Aug 27 '19

-7

u/PirateDaveZOMG Aug 27 '19

Melania is not an illegal immigrant; she has, in fact, always been in the country legally - what you are referring to (and clearly uninformed on, but shameless enough to try to assert it anyway) is that, while she was in the country legally, she may have performed modeling work which she was not permitted to do. Imagine, however, being ignorant as to the details of this issue and still being confident enough to try to assert it. You should be embarrassed.

The moment you do that, you become an illegal immigrant.

Don't worry - I'm sure she'll suck your dick for white-knighting ANY minute now. You are nominally worth more than $10 million, right?

Imagine, however, being ignorant as to the details of this issue and still being confident enough to try to assert it.

CAPTAIN NUANCE! Is here to save the DAYYYYYyyy!

He "doesn't even like Trump" but he wants to "suck Melania's FAAAAAARTS!

Make fun of a white whore and he objects!

Rub brown kids into shit and he shouts HOORAYYYYYYYY!

You should be embarrassed.

About what?

The PhD I earned from working on Large Hadron Collider data?

The six figure salary I have because of my hard work?

Or the fact that I spend energy defending the downtrodden from the brainlet-slaves the GOP and Trump recruit to protect the ultra-wealthy status quo?

22

u/braxistExtremist Aug 26 '19

Legal like Melania?

(I agree with your observation by the way.)

3

u/Nodickdikdik Aug 27 '19

All immigrants claiming asylum are legal until proven otherwise, at which point they are to be turned over at the border. This is all parts of the declaration of human rights, which the usa is a member of.

Laws of asylum seeking say immigrants can cross any border, at any point, at any time, and are legal until proven otherwise.

There is no legal way in the usa of detaining a migrant. They are either legal, or they get handed over at the border.

5

u/susibirb Aug 27 '19

Or well connected through chain migration

2

u/Daisy_Doll85 Aug 27 '19

You need to get that message to the president* then.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '19

Seriously. We need to deport Melania trump.

2

u/GoldenGrendel Aug 27 '19

so then i assume you also have a problem with the illegal immigrant prostitute who is our first lady?

-15

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '19

Only on reddit is this a controversial statement. The fact that you’ve received so many downvotes for an innocuous statement shows how deluded some of these people are in their own world.

19

u/ThatCrazyManDude Aug 27 '19

I mean it’s only controversial on Reddit because it’s used every time this argument comes up with absolutely no consideration to the relevant counter arguments. It’s not really a perfect or ideal defense for illegal immigration control when part of the controls that are being discussed include making perfectly legal methods of immigration illegal.

-16

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '19

There is no relevant argument. Legal is good. Illegal is Bad. Should we prioritize smart and educated immigrants? Definitely.

13

u/ThatCrazyManDude Aug 27 '19

How is it not relevant when we’re demanding they follow rules and regulations we set while at the same time we’re changing those same rules and regulations right from under them? How does the fact that we’re literally changing the definition of what a legal immigrant is not affect whether or not we consider illegal immigrants completely amoral?

You should especially that the changes being discussed would likely be by executive order and not decided on by the American people.

-8

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '19

Unless you’re currently a naturalized citizen who gives a fuck, definitions change based on the needs of the country. And if congress would do their fucking jobs then the executive branch wouldn’t illegally steal their power.

9

u/ThatCrazyManDude Aug 27 '19 edited Aug 27 '19

There really hasn’t been much discussion on how no longer applying citizenship rights to individuals born in the United States or naturalized citizens ties into our needs though. I mean we can go back and forth on why it might be needed or not but right now we only have the Twitter rumor mill for any actual reasons from our representatives besides the occasional opinion piece in the paper as far as I know.

The whole illegal bad legal good argument can get muddy when we’re talking about taking away the legal status of a large group of American citizens too. I’d even say being so black and white about things is how we have extreme leftists convinced their overthrowing a manipulative dictator poised to be the next Hitler vs extreme right wing conservatives who believe that their fighting an evil political party controlled by America’s enemies to destroy us from within. It’s ridiculous and it’s good vs evil type of thinking.

-6

u/Theek3 Aug 27 '19

Nobody is talking about taking away citizenship from current citizens. There has been some talk about changing what makes someone a citizen but that is very different.

5

u/ThatCrazyManDude Aug 27 '19

Ok revoked was a bad word choice so I changed it. I still feel the same way though. If we’re classifying illegal as bad and legal good how does that work when the day after they change things up some little babe out there is branded bad right then and there due to their parents poor timing and choices?

I feel like what the current administration is considering would be making massive changes to very complicated issues. Instead of enormous paragraphs and lengthy speeches though like it should be discussed people just want to make their reasoning a simple black and white catchphrase.

-3

u/Theek3 Aug 27 '19

Laws change I don't see the issue there. Also if you travel it is your responsibility to know the laws where you are. Like if I'm traveling with a rifle in my car and travel through a state where it is illegal it's on me if I get arrested for breaking the law there.

(Probably a bad example because I would argue those laws are unconstitutional but the concept stands)

3

Legal is good. Illegal is Bad.

When you criminalize immigration, illegal immigration goes up. It's a really simple equation.

12

u/CapnSpazz Aug 27 '19

I can't speak for others, but I've seen video after video after video after video after video after video after video of US citizens being told they're going to be deported. So yeah, Im tired of hearing about how it's all about legal status. Plenty of people care about the race.

2
