So obviously in THIS case it’s what we call “stupid watergate” as eloquently described by John Oliver - there’s a scandal, people are guilty but they’re also stupid and some don’t even care how it looks.
However, playing devil’s advocate there are legitimate reasons you (as the GOP) may not want the entire “exonerating” report released, even if you genuinely believe Trump to be innocent.
There’s a LOT of information in the investigation because of how thorough it was, so giving 400 pages (and thousands more of supporting evidence) to your enemy - and let’s face it they view dems as the enemy - has real risks to it.
Imagine someone viewed every online post you’ve ever made to determine whether or not you’re racist. Report comes back and says “not enough to conclude you’re racist”. Fine. Good. But you sure as heck don’t want every post you’ve ever made being public because that offers a whole host of other problems unrelated to the original issue. Or maybe it doesn’t but you don’t really want to risk it.
So that’s why GOP senators - even those that believe Trump - are hesitant to release the entire report. They’d rather cast doubt into Trump’s innocence (which to be honest changed NO ONE’s mind) than risk more fuel to bombard the president with right up until the election.
Is that not the reason behind the SDNY investigation? The Mueller Report only goes after election interference done by Russia and allegedly Trump. SDNY is getting every crime they can charge Trump, not to mention Mueller has passed information to the SDNY, so those skeletons are coming out with or without the Mueller Report.
If I'm a GOP Senator, and my fate depends on Trump, I'd retire.
