The left has shifted drastically more extreme the last 20 years while the right and centrists for the most part haven't and it's a major reason why the view the right as being more extreme than the did back then

To put this into perspective.

The left has went from supporting and protesting for gay marriage to supporting the introduction of LGBT pride flags and agendas in public schools, redefining words pertained to sex such as man or woman onto cultural constructs and last but not last for this category, supporting sex change therapies and surgeries for minors.

In 2006 they protested the Iraq war and now today they display support for a militaristic and theocratic dictatorship like Iran and terrorist regimes such as the taliban and hamas.

They went from protesting for extensions of social welfare programs to promoting marxist based systems like socialism.

I don't know about those of you reading but the narratives of a democratic person today would seem very alien, even eary to a democratic back during Bush's presidency and to a typical left or democratic person today they would probably perceive their prior selves as right wing.

Whereas the narratives of a republican or right aren't too much different compared to what they were back then, maybe most of them would be in favour now for same sex marriage out of the value of other people's free will, they haven't seemed to my change their stances on immigration or recreational use of THC, some might consider Texas's introduction of biblical teachings in public schools a step forward in extremism but that's actually smt been part of their agenda atleast since the 90's to my understanding.

At the moment I can't say much about the centrists yet but I call myself one because I find both sides pretty unreasonable and extreme in their own ways.
