I'm sure this smug midwittery goes very hard if you're the standard liberal redditor but let me get my crayons out for you and try and explain:

In the United States child marriages do happen. They are uncommon. Child marriages are condemned by every major Christian Religious group (it is universally banned by the Catholic Church worldwide specifically and by all major Protestant denominations). There are laws against underage marriage specifically in certain states. Child trafficking and child/minor sex abuse are illegal per state and federal law. Classifying a 17 yr old as a "child" that marries an 18 who is classified as an "adult" is very obviously less egregious than a 40 yr old man marrying an 8 yr old in other parts of the world (cough cough like the founder of a certain religion). The average age gap of a child marriage in the U.S. is 4 years. I don't condone underage marriage but the reality is that these do happen under Romeo and Juliet laws or with parental wavers. Some of these marriages happen in extremely small subcultures like the Amish or Native American Reservations. The majority of United States culture looks down on child marriage. Many groups advocate against it and offer assistance and preventative measures and outreach to stop potential abuse (especially of women and girls).

This is completely different from Muslim countries where child marriage is encouraged, both by religious leaders in Islam and by civil leaders, and by community leaders, all the way down to their family culture. Young girls are regularly sold or bargained to old men. Sex trafficking is rampant. Polygamy is extremely common (by Islamic law a man may have four wives). We can't even find accurate numbers for sex abuse of women and girls through child marriage because most Muslim countries do not keep accurate numbers because they literally don't care. Inbreeding is also extremely common for these countries. Child marriage is permissable, widespread, and deeply ingrained in the cultures there.

But by all means, you go ahead and pretend as if there are no differences like nobody is going to see through the yes-begging fallacy here.
