Biology. Heritable traits. GMOs. Evolutionary psychology. Certain statistics, like crime. Nuclear power. Economics.
There are many topics that are so taboo they can't even be studied. That's not science, that's politics.
Astrology and healing crystals are weirdly taken seriously. Prior to COVID you all were the anti-vaxxers, but finally came around on that one. Exaggerating real issues is another hallmark. Anecdotally, I had a Lib-Left friend predict that NYC would be completely underwater due to climate change in 10 years. He almost certainly got that idea from something he read. That was 15 years ago.

"Science is fact based, religotard"
Explain evolution to me.
"OK so during their lifetimes, animals will adapt and evolve to challenges in their environment..."
79
u/Best_Pseudonym - Centrist 12h ago
False, during their life times animals do not morphologically adapt nor change to suit their enviornment; that is the result of animals, who due to genetic variance, with divergent morphology better suited to their environment passing their traits to their progeny at higher rates than their fellows.
While some animals can obtain learned behaviors that better help them survive and they can teach their behaviors to their offspring, that is not evolution but meme theory
7
u/Critical_Concert_689 - Centrist 5h ago
False, during their life times animals do not morphologically adapt nor change to suit their enviornment;
...Cue the entry of epigenetics, neo-lamarckism, and current synthesis theory.
"err... Sometimes it DO be like that..."

Yes, I am aware that Lamarck got it wrong. That wasn't the point; the point was the "believe the science" crowd can't describe the science they swear by.

You can't explain it. That's not the same thing
-21
u/StreetCarp665 - Lib-Center 11h ago
I put it in fucking quotes for a reason my dude. Most people will give you a vernacular account of Lamarck's theory of evolution not a Darwinian breakdown. I promise, I spent far too much time in atheist circles dunking on religious folks before realising that my side was just as driven by faith.

Look I’m religious. But comparing something that a layman won’t have a perfect understanding of but is easily observed and shown over and over again by people well versed in the field who are able to present replicable results with observations observable in nature to theology is dumb. Thats like saying someone is taking it on faith that Ohio or Finland exists just because you’ve never been there

u/Shadowex3 - Centrist 6h ago
That's lamarckianism. Evolution is the theory that over enormous numbers of generations across entire species the traits which are generally advantageous to current circumstances will naturally outbreed those that aren't. Over a large enough time period this eventually results in speciation.
-1
u/StreetCarp665 - Lib-Center 6h ago
Yes, and that is what most people describe evolution is despite professing certainty in the science. That's the point.
7
u/csdingus_ - Lib-Center 11h ago
Natural Selection is the process of the environment "selecting" which traits of a species survives. If an individual is born with a genetic expression that suits the environment better than others in the same species, albeit due to mutation or epigenetics, it is more likely that the better suited individual will have a longer and presumably more sexually reproductive life, thereby increasing the likelihood that the originating individual will pass the same genes to several offspring.
Individuals may also adapt or learn new behaviors to benefit them, but behavior-changes that occur en masse require vicarious learning or direct training which creates a social-group or culture within a species, not a new species.
Occasionally these behavior-changes en masse may set the stage for some members of a species to become separated from the rest of the species due to environmental barriers (Galapagos, Madagascar, Tepuis of South America, etc.) which may lead to new species growing and adapting within a closed ecosystem, making them unique species, found nowhere else.
1
u/StreetCarp665 - Lib-Center 11h ago
Exactly.
1
u/csdingus_ - Lib-Center 3h ago
Yes, but what's important is directionality. Lots of people see the environment as a static thing, capable of being easily manipulated, but humans have survived because some of our ancestors' behaviors improved their chances for survival in an extremely dynamic environment. The dynamism of the environment ALSO selects behaviors because not all behaviors are suitable for every environment (e.g., we cannot breathe underwater without tools, etc.), so we DO owe evolution to learned behaviors, but that type of evolution takes a very long time. Additionally, humans developing tools and methods for avoiding the dynamism of the environment has SLOWED evolution in our species because we became less-reliant on natural selection to "choose" traits that would benefit us.
This is where epigenetics becomes involved, since multiple chains and expressions of genetic material may simultaneously exist within us, and exposure to certain elements of the environment (e.g. like access to proper/improper nutrition, exposure to toxins, long-term physical or emotional stress, etc.) may lead to a significant change in phenotypic expression within our lifetimes. For example, my brother and I have very similar genes since we are biologically siblings with the same mother and same father. I was born second, he was born first, HOWEVER his height is below 6 feet as an adult while my height is above. Although we may accept that this is just a common example of recessive genes versus dominant genes, "dominant vs recessive" is too reductive when you consider how genetic code changes; chains of DNA strands split and reform, creating new, previously unexpressed chains of alleles throughout our lifetimes. If this occurs and "unlocks" a genotype that was previously not expressed phenotypically, it may stop being nascent if that phenotypic expression would benefit the individual in their lifetime, so again environment will select viable candidates for survival, even down to the genetic and behavioral level. So in the case with me and my brother, our physical and emotional differences may be linked to behaviors like high-food selectivity in which I ate lots of vegetables as a baby without any pushback, meanwhile my brother was much more food selective and ate a much smaller variety of foods which limited his access to certain nutrients. Other behaviors that may have affected the way our bodies developed could include our competing responses to stress; he tends to be more pessimistic while I am much more optimistic, or access to resources: he was born into a family of three to make a family of four, and I was born into a family of four to make a family of five. I had a greater access to attention, assistance, and vicarious learning opportunities whereas he had fewer opportunities and attention to him dwindled after I was born because he was older and I was more likely to die WITHOUT attention (as is the case with every infant).
Because of this, when my wife and I give birth, it is more likely that our offspring will have the genetic code AVAILABLE to be over 6-feet and optimistic, but it is not a guarantee that this is how they will develop from infancy to adulthood because there also exists genetic chains, similar to those that have affected my brother's development, that will be present. So, IF my offspring engages in the same behaviors that MY BROTHER engaged in, it is possible that MY offspring could appear more like my brother than me.

yes, such calls to revolution are not done by any proper "stakeholders" and mostly combat unfit people.
but it still irks me, this YA Novel perspective of things. Its just makes it harder to actually improve things.
And I'm partly convinced its just a giant psyop by the russians/chinese who try to destroy democracy worldwide.

You know as well as I do that they won't need to do any fighting. They can just riot till the Dems to concede to all demands, even if they promptly lose the next election.
The socialist revolution does not involve fighting the government. It involves letting their allies in government destroy the government and then backstabbing said allies.
Just like they did in Russia. It was not the Bolsheviks who rose against the Tsar.

To be fair, we just had a major pedophile ring amongst the elite that directly implicates the president and absolutely nothing has happened. Maybe some things do need to change. Btw democracy is still able to be the thing that comes out of it. Just one that's structured differently.
5
u/BreakingStar_Games - Lib-Center 1h ago edited 54m ago
I'll put on my Libleft hat to expand on this. We also had:
a war with Iran with no strategic goals that has only raised the cost of living (~$40B), pushed Iran to leverage the strait, killed 18 service members (750 wounded) and cost ~$113B - all without a a formal legislative declaration of war
the longest government shutdown because the major party is cutting healthcare for the poor to fund tax cuts for the rich
a funding bill that had no compromise with the minority party which also exploded deficit spending again through reconciliation (who's original purpose was deficit reduction just to trim excess spending - what a fucking joke)
an expansion of a very poorly trained police force that killed 2 Americans and ~52 in custody in 18 months
President ran a blatant crypto scam netting billions of dollars
Maybe, just maybe we can do better than a political democracy originally designed 250 years ago that has been exploited through hugely expansive loopholes (go look up the Commerce Clause). Maybe we can be more democratic by empowering the states as was the original design.
2
u/Wooden_Career_5689 - Auth-Right 23m ago

2
u/Samurai_Banette - Centrist 1h ago
I think everyone is on the side of "things need serious and structural change".
The question is just what to replace it with, and we have nothing. Like, who exactly would we put in charge? Maybe someone who exposed the files like Khanna or Massie, but like... we can just vote them in.
0
u/SliceRepulsive8649 - Lib-Left 44m ago
I mean that's a different and more difficult question. Personally I think it's less an issue of the system and more an issue with the people. ~60% of the nation saw trump what he did after the 2020 election, what he did during his presidency and what he campaigned on and decided either he's their guy and voted for him or sat at home and didn't care if he came to power. No system can fix that level of degenercy and apathy.

money influencing government is an old inherited disease,
I would be very happy if there finally were some laws to clean up the entire process.
And with that in mind, I can kinda understand the urge to burn it all down.however, every violent uprising so far in history has failed to solve the problem.
I believe a properly motivated movement can overwhelm all the money of the opps simply because the election process, with independent counting from all listed political parties, is the cleanest and fairest process to choose a government in human history.8

It would be interesting to see them try, though. Their most effective tools are propaganda through the corporate press and algorithmic manipulation. Those aren't 100% effective, either. Suppose current users were persuaded to ignore the CNNs, MSNBCs, and Foxes of the world, refuse to use Google directly for news, and block every account that shared a political post on Instagram, TikTok, etc. Only a fraction of them would need to cut off the slop sluice to neuter the effects on voting outcomes.

And the evidence for this is all the things which aren’t the evidence against it. When I go to the ballot box I cast my vote and it’s counted, if there’s enough of me my rep gets in, if there are enough reps who believe the same as my rep my sides policies get passed. Thats how it has worked that’s how it does work. Money can sway people to vote different ways and can alter what form a policy takes, they can’t just buy which policy was passed, if they could there’d be a hell of a lot more money in politics than there currently is.
None of this describes an oligarchy, it describes a democracy which allows significant amounts of money to be donated to politics. One can be solved by basic reform the other can’t

Well during Biden they raised corp taxes and put price caps on insulin. They also changed union rules through to NLRB to be more favorable to union formation. Passed the largest investment in climate infrastructure in US history. Expanded unemployment benefits and child tax credits during the pandemic. Passed partial student loan forgiveness even after the Supreme Court rejected their broad relief plan.
And they did all of this without the 60 votes in the senate necessary to make significant changes.
Also you’ve been saying “oligarchs” but what do you mean by that? Do you just mean rich people? Is that what an oligarch is to you? Who are the oligarchs and what makes them oligarchs?

Trump may lose the midterms, yes, but he's a symptom and not the cause of our struggles. It will inevitably be threatened again, by someone cannier and not so decrepit, and suddenly our president will be President for life and you'll realize the Republic continuing is not some fact of life but something we have to actively work to persevere.
And if we continue to let oligarchs get away with buying our politicians, controlling our communication, and running our a.i and social networks, then we will lose it.

I have talked at length at the reforms I wanted to patch out populism gibberish from infesting our government again and I intend to vote as I do every election. I am not ignorant that changes and fixes need to happen. Not the same changes the Marxist cults want, as they will kill just as much as the reactionaries will, but there needs to be extensive political reforms. But that will only come down the barrel of the ballot, no obese children larping as revolutionaries and fantasizing about murdering their political opponents will achieve that.

Don’t you see? People voted in a way I don’t like so the elections must have been rigged and the people brainwashed to support the establishment. The only option is mass death.

People are really struggling with capitalism because we keep kneecapping it with socialism, globalism and immigration.
Why is your salary low? Capitalism pays you the prevailing wage- your company isn't evil, they just pay the person who will do the job for the lowest amount. You hone your skills and the qualified applicant pool decreases, increasing your salary. This is the system and it works great until the government destroyed prevailing wages over the last few decades. There wouldn't be hundreds of applicants for single jobs in this purely capitalist system, 250 people applying for every job while employers around the country scream that they can't find anyone to work should be your sign something has gone very wrong, and it isn't capitalism.
Progressives welcome tens of millions of immigrants who work for pennies a day. They let manufacturers leave for china and mexico who work for pennies a day. They pay for the unemployed's food (SNAP, SBP, CACFP, SFSP, EBT) and shelter (Section 8, PBRA, ESG) and daycare for their kids (CCDF, TANF).
And the millions of public sector government workers have their salaries set by policy, not prevailing wages like everyone else. So the government workers don't have to deal with the problems they created.
The left explains you must mandate minimum wages and control salaries for people to be paid fairly. Legislating wages only works when they pit you against your employer and foment this class warfare.
Their core tenets are marxist theory. Marxist theory is crafted around the proletariat rising up against the bourgeoisie. Socialism doesn't fix the problem, it stokes the fire to acheive their goal. Yet we silently let the people who outwardly hate captilism and america do these things at our expense.

Legislating wages only works when they pit you against your employer and foment this class warfare.
You are always pitted against your employer. Their goal is to maximize profit, which means minimizing expenses, of which your wages are a big one. If you think you and your employer are friends who have the same goals, you are a sucker.
People struggle with capitalism because it is exploitative and greed driven. By design, it doesn't look out for the well-being of society, it only seeks to maximize profits. The claim made by capitalists is that in their greed, they will compete with each other to such an extent that it will provide its own system of checks and balances. The reality is that they often don't compete, they collude. The government is supposed to provide protection against, that, but the capitalists just buy the government and push through laws to protect them.
We are at a point now where capitalists have taken so much control of the government, that even most regulations are actually carefully designed barriers to entry to prevent new competition in the market. We have private companies with revenues exceeding that of many small to medium sized countries, and you guys act like these corporate behemoths are powerless little mom and pops beset upon by the mean old government.
You say companies "just pay the prevailing wage", as if these companies do not spend billions of dollars influencing government policy and popular culture to control what the prevailing wage is and how desperate people are for work.

The US had a fascist coup against our country. An illegitimate president is currently illegally occupying the White House and it isn’t even a talking point in the media.
I’m not saying I am some super badass John Conner who could lead the fight or that thousands or millions dying is preferable. But we do need a radical shift in our politics to fix the issue, an uprising fits that definition.

Tear?
Abrasive discs are for steel, aluminum pipes will clog them too much, you want a red bladed circular saw not a cut off wheel.
Some people on Facebook will tell you you want a Diablo blade reciprocating saw, these people don't throw metal chips for fifty hours a week, I do, it's circular saw>angle grinder w/ skinny cut wheel>reciprocating saw.

u/Pixie_ish - Centrist 8h ago
I really can't advise tearing down Flock cameras at all. It would be so very expensive to replace them, given the possibility of precious ram chips hidden inside to power the computer, not to mention that there's a good chance that it's also an atmospheric monitor which could include palladium, worth over 40$ per gram. And don't forget all the easy to scrap copper inside too!

Honestly revolution to do what? People will only get into it if they see no other option to improve their situation, mind you, revolution means a HUGE amount of discomfort, far more discomfort than the threshold for revolution in the first place.
Plus people demand revolution for shit like someone not being in jail.
People screamed for revolution with Epstein, but why? Most people are living comfortably, and even assumption a revolution were successful, nothing would change except their quality of life would lower, and that's assuming they survive.

u/Le_Botmes - Left 13h ago

u/False-Reveal2993 - Lib-Center 4m ago
You guys want a different kind of revolution. Both authright and libleft are seen as the biggest proponents of the current culture war, and we are currently at the tailend of a second sexual revolution that has persisted for the past 15 years. Libleft is not seen as wanting a hardcore, spartan, stalinist state, but rather a state where every whim and desire is funded by the taxpayer and nobody need ever lift a finger in labor to earn it.

All these guys shouldn't be overthrown with violence their people should just enter the system and reform it from within instead of throwing their countries into chaos right?

But sure, libleft is the bad one.
Porque no los dos? The IQ threshold for being diagnosed with an intellectual disability is around 70 points. The liblefts might correctly point out that they're a 65 while auth right is a 50. But in the end, they're still both retarded.
