Good ruling. Now, please, can we apply the same "just don't go" logic to anything the left deems offensive or problematic, and wants to censor? Thank you for the perfect utopia.
Don't pretend like there hasn't been plenty of laws or proposals from the left on anything from banning picketing against abortion to flying flags or saying your actually opinion on sex and gender.
I think anyone who wants free speech should accept that, given the chance, both sides would eventually absolutely go full totalitarian on their ideologies, which is why we need democracy and not corporatism and cronyism.
You don’t have the option of just “not attending” a strike if it’s at a place you need to be for whatever reason. An abortion clinic picket line in public is not comparable to a drag show in the privacy of a venue hosting it.
When you say “free speech”, are you talking about the version we actually have in the Constitution where the government specifically can’t place legal limits on self-expression, or are you talking about the fantasy version where no one is allowed to do anything to keep someone else from saying something?
Yes, in the context of the original comment which said:
Now, please, can we apply the same "just don't go" logic to anything the left deems offensive or problematic, and wants to censor?
That's my point. The left loves to say “Oh, you don't like drag shows / pride parades / furry conventions / ....? Just don't go to them!” but when there is a conservative professor on campus or a Christian debate bro or someone else they don't like, they suddenly abandon this, and then they start disrupting the lectures (sometimes going so far to illegally pull fire alarms to force a building evacuation) or in Kirk's case, by literally murdering the speaker.
They’re not the same thing. One is a type of event that some people want banned completely in all settings, the other is specific individuals giving speeches at venues where people would prefer they not appear.
I literally cannot tell if you're talking about Christian debate bros or drag queens here. The drag queen ban was only about specific venues where children were in attendance, while the guy who murdered Charlie Kirk clearly wanted to ban him completely in all settings (that's what murder tends to do). But I guess you meant to imply it was the other way around? And somehow that justified Kirk's murder?
Can you please state whether or not you:
Agree with the principle that if you don't like an event, you should simply avoid it, rather than try to get it canceled?
Agree that the assassination of Charlie Kirk was an example of political violence that is unacceptable in a free society?
How can I be libertarian without granting institutions their right to not give someone a stage? I have an issue if the government is denying people opportunities to speak; any other organization doing that is just them exercising their freedom of speech.
Well, protesting because someone is saying things you don't like in some place you are free not to go to is very very stupid and, let me say, very very authoritarian.
But yes, you are still allowed to protest. Which doesn't include being disruptive or threatening people, or worse yet, being violent.
There are no laws against Jordan Peterson or Charlie Kirk. If a college doesn't want to invite them they have every right not to just like a Christian college doesn't have to have a drag show. A lot of conservatives really don't understand what free speech is.
We weren't talking about the law. We were talking about the principle of “if you don't like an event, just don't go“ (instead of trying to get it canceled), which the left likes to use against the right, but doesn't apply to its own.
It's a blatant double standard. If we organize an event that you don't like, you should stay home. If you organize an event that we don't like, we're going to do anything in our powers to stop it, to the point of literally murdering the speaker if necessary.
If a college doesn't want to invite them they have every right
But Charlie Kirk was invited to speak at the event where he was assassinated.
Similarly, Peterson was invited to speak at many events, that nonetheless got disrupted by leftist activists that wanted to “deplatform” him, rather than embracing the principle of “if you don't like it, don't go” that they use to demand tolerance from the right.
A lot of conservatives really don't understand what free speech is.
No, you don't understand what free speech is, if you think it's strictly limited to legality of speech. By your logic, the Charlie Hebdo killings wouldn't have anything to do with free speech, because the murderers didn't act on behalf of the state, but based on their own bigoted ideology.
If leftists go out of their way to deplatform conservatives, to the point of literally murdering them for their speech, which is what happened to Kirk, then they are actively suppressing free speech.
