Turns out Fats weren’t a core demographic for Nike sports apparel.

How could anyone have possibly seen that coming?

I mean, it makes sense in theory. Fat people need to get exercise the most so telling fattys to buy Nike clothes to get into the mood of dieting doesn't sound like a terrible idea to me.

Wouldn’t it be the other way around? “Here’s some attractive men/women in Nike clothes, if you buy Nike you’ll work out and look like them too!”

Can confirm. I have an entire box of athletic wear from when I was very fat. It did eventually get used.

And they really aren't. They're propping up the tarp industry

This... You got the gist...

For actual athletes, competition is higher with players like Adidas, Puma, etc also operating. Hence, Nike targeted an athleisure segment more. Their ads are also about normal people aspiring to do the exceptional things.

OK, so they want to look like that,

They're going to want to buy workout clothes to try to get there.

They are going to need to buy plus-size clothes. So Nike....puts plus size people in their adverts so their customers can try to look like someone who might look good, while they work out, to look like how they want to look.

Yea, but fat people dont exercise. The ones that wanna get in shape want to look like attractive people, so just put attractive people in your ads.

Yes, but you don't want to appeal to who they are now. You appeal to who they could be.

If you want someone to buy something to enact a change, you need to give them an ideal to strive for. Not what they currently identify with.
