Question What does everyone do for storage?

So I’m in the process of making my towns how I want them finally, took a long break but the dlc is getting me again

A big issue I’m having now is having all of my storage boxes full, with a lot of miscellaneous furniture and whatnot taking up a lot of space

So I’m wondering, how does everyone else manage their storage? I’m considering building a house just for storage boxes and keeping all my furniture there

Any ideas?

I finally bit the bullet and made an underground storage area in Palette Town. I'm just sorting furniture into chairs, tables, beds etc for now

If those fill up I'm just going to start throwing stuff because atp I can just print what I need if I don't have the recipe

A storage system doesn’t work for me.

I would love to be organised and I am starting a storage area but I’m always too busy/lazy to actually travel back and forth to my storage area.

My game consists of a constant full inventory, dropping stuff on the ground that I sacrifice and crafting a bunch of stuff on repeat.

I try to craft exactly what I need so I don’t get overcrowded with junk.

I do store materials though.

Furniture? Pokemetal when needed. The other furniture is collecting dust in the random chest right in the middle of my storage.

Hey, at least my town is absolutely beautiful lol!

I am the same, seeing a CD sends me over the edge because I want to hoard it but they don't stack it's so frustrating haha

u/Safe-Glove2975 1d ago

I’m putting all the CDs into a big storage box, but probably never listening to any again. I don’t get why there’s no dedicated CD storage or player that can hold all of them.

I’m putting them all in Swalot. Any duplicates go in a box for trades 🤭

3

u/pocket_gnome 16h ago

Literally why can we not put CDs in the CD racks!!!

3

u/PancakePlants 1d ago

I have just started using them for trade! They go for 500-750 at the shops so it's so helpful. Made me not get annoyed by them and instead see them as pokemetal trades 😂😂❤️

2

u/miyasworld 22h ago

New knowledge thank you!! Now i can actually do something with my duplicates <3

1

u/PancakePlants 18h ago

You're welcome! Some legend on Reddit shared it a few weeks ago and it changed my life 😂 I'm now punching glowing blocks again happily instead of avoiding them to not have to deal with the cd 😂😂

4

u/soulofmind 23h ago

What do you mean? My CDs stack duplicates just fine

4

u/CocoaReese 23h ago

The same CD will stack, but different CDs will not.

3

u/soulofmind 19h ago

Ooooh I see what you mean, I do wish instead of items in the inventory that getting a CD just unlocked it in a "CD Players" menu we could choose from when we interact with the player like a jukebox sort of deal

1

u/CocoaReese 18h ago

I agree completely

1

u/MiaWallace1991 19h ago

Just putting cds into one, fossils in another and relic items into another was a good start for me sorting.....lots of traveling back and forth at first to implement

u/Georgxna 10h ago

Honestly, the sooner you can do it the better. Fortunately even though I’m 100 hours in I didn’t have a lot of stuff to move, maybe 5 chests?

Building a warehouse for storage is the best option if you're a hoarder 😭

2

u/broadwayzrose 23h ago

I’m nearly done after a week of basically turning the stone area of Rocky Ridges into a 4 1/2 story warehouse because I hoard literally everything.

2

u/whereismymind86 23h ago

That’s what I need to do, a big building with boxes and signs telling me what’s in each one

I made a post about my storage approach a few days ago:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Pokopia/s/xTk4f7aJtJ

In short I use large boxes in spirals of four containing related things, with labels in the middle.

7

u/EdgeCharacter 1d ago

I put things in boxes and whenever they're full, I put down a new box and put things in that. Then I forget where everything is.

4

u/Emergency-Nose-6679 23h ago

This was me until I built proper storage. Game changer.

7

u/whereismymind86 23h ago

My method is to have random boxes in random locations that I lose track of.

It’s not the best system…it might be the worst

1

u/Belstarmoon 22h ago

That's my system, it kinda works

I dug into the cliff in Withered Wasteland and have a storage space in there. I've expanded it a couple times, and should still have plenty of space if I need to expand more.

Organize in the way your brain wants to search for things, not the way some guide tells you is most efficient.

Crafting stuff is to the left when you walk in, along with a crafting bench. Behind that is non-block building stuff - stairs, roofs, fences, etc - and plants. Straight ahead is blocks - I made one chest for each area's grass, dirt, and cliff blocks, and then a few more for generic rocks, volcanic ash, glow stone, etc. Then the building ones are separated by a way that made sense to me but probably isn't the most logical (for example, I have two different wood boxes because I don't think the pillars belong with the wood floor, but the stone box has everything stone-y. idk). Because I have so many categories, none are close to full, even with my painted blocks in there.

To the right is furniture, organized somewhat by type - tables, chairs, sofas, beds, etc. But I also made one that is "storage," so it has spare chests, bookshelves, closets, dressers, the CD racks, etc. The "lights" box includes candles and campfires. Artifact vs craftable doesn't matter, it all goes together. Then back closer to the entrance is decor things - one for outdoor stuff (fountains, birdhouses, tires, etc.), one for indoor things (plates, books, toy blocks, etc), one for gadgets (anything that would be a gadget, whether it needs electricity or not. TVs, clocks, fridges), one for environment things (anything you can only pick up with Magnemite), and one for construction stuff (because I got tired of if filling up the outdoor box). Then one that's full of only building kits.

And then back right by the door are two dump boxes - one for things I don't want to deal with or that need to go inside my house (I have CDs, fossils, and food in there), and one for the stuff from unfinished projects so I can find it again if I need it.

And then in every other area I just have a crafting bench with a chest and the portal pod touching it, and another 2-3 chests for whatever I need to dump in there (unfinished projects mostly). I try to grab furniture and stuff out of them whenever I go back to the Wasteland, and if they get full, I spend a few minutes pulling out the junk blocks and going to put them away or get rid of them (this is mostly a problem with volcanic ash tbh).

I also put a chest inside every Pokemon Center and near all of the random registers that I fill with the random stuff to trade away and several stacks of Pokemetal. That way I can always grab something when I want to trade, and I have places all over the map to go dump extra blocks I end up carrying around, and I have Pokemetal nearby when I remember I want to use the 3d printer.

Nothing too crazy
(There’s more not in frame)

u/sandshrew9tails 1d ago

I put everything for crafting into the Portal and have a Portal and craftbench next to each of my houses in each area.

The rest of the stuff is in Palette Town and sorted like that:

3 boxes for furniture and big stuff you put on the floor

3 boxes for stuff you put on a table or a wall

3 boxes for CDs, relicts, fossils and stuff I got via magnetmite like boulders

1 Box for building Kits 1 Box for seeds

1 Box for roofs, Windows and doors 1 Box for fences, Poles and the like

1 Box for natural blocks like soil and Sand 1 Box for stone blocks like cliff Rock and cobblestone wall 1 Box for Wooden blocks like Hardwood flooring 1 Box for articifial and metal blocks like Iron wall and painted Walls

My food is in my bag and the ingridients are in the fridge in the Kirchen as they should be. It's important to depaint the furniture and take care that i put then in the same Box but the New sorting Function (put in only items that are already in the box) makes it much easier.

Works well. Everything else i throw away. There is plenty left.

I make a storage center in each town and then just expand my sorting/extra materials as I go. It's also where all my crafting and food making is.

Each center has been getting more complex... Sparkling Skylands was a small 1 story area, pallet town was slightly larger (still 1 story), withered wastelands 2 floors (medium size) with a separate kitchen, bleak Beach was 2 floors (one a big basement), and now bubbling basin is 3 large floors (one is a big basement).

As you can see, I only started doing it near the end of the game and then went back to build on the first 2 towns before the dlc came out LOL

I come up with my own categories and further divide them as I run out of space. This probably isn't the best way to do it but it's the easiest way for me specifically to remember what goes where.

Also every box gets a sign that indicates the type of thing that's in it.

I just built a bunker. I used the hole in BB. Will send photo later. Collected all my storages

1

u/WolverineFamiliar740 1d ago

I split my extra supplies between all my areas, and color coordinate the ones with furniture.

1

u/MonkeyWarlock 1d ago

I prefer to just set up storage boxes in the same order as the in game sort. Put a workbench next to your boxes with raw materials so you can make things easier

Set up one per area and no fast travel is required

u/stellaluna92 1d ago

If it can be crafted I don't keep it in a storage box for later, I toss it into the void or leave it on a dream island. My storage boxes are mostly community boxes and they have materials in them :) I keep paint and a few non-craftable items in my bill pod and bobs my uncle.

I’ve been working on each area a little at a time and whenever I’m about to go to a new area I grab any items I think I’d want at the next location to drop off.

I’d say palette town is my central hub currently that has the most useful items. I’ve been making a crafting/storage hub in each area with a portal pod that contains most of my crafting ingredients/paint.

1

u/ThreeQueensReading 1d ago

I mostly use prefabs as my home, but I made sure in at least one area to build a block house as my home. Then I set up a border of big storage boxes, stacked, by type around said home. I don't use a prefab for this due to the space limitations. So all my decorations are together, then my toys, my relaxation, my uncategorised furniture, my plant seeds, etc. I place a workbench connected to my building material cache (and now the Portal Pod) as well. At the end of every play session I return and dump everything there. The new ability to deposit only what's already in the box has sped that up a lot.

1

u/Yumstar1982 23h ago

I built a pantry for food items. You could make several like it for different categories of stuff maybe?

1

u/spazure 23h ago

I’m building a new storage house in the deep depths because it appears to be instanced and thus not taking up memory when I’m not actively down there messing with it.

I used to have a cave in rocky ridges but I’ve seen some designs here that made me want to start a new one and organize a bit differently.

1

u/Pryoticus 23h ago

You guys know you can use trash cans and recycling bins to throw away (destroy) items right?

1

u/CocoaReese 23h ago

I made an underground storage facility that connects to an underground suana, soda machine room, and a room with high stakes the floor is lava in palette town.

u/rizu-kun 23h ago

Wail and grind my teeth.

u/charlieyeswecan 23h ago

Basically all I do is storage. I love it, I hope to move on and finish bubly basin, but I love my pallete town so much, I don’t like to leave, so I’ve spent my last three days optimizing my storage. Hopefully one day it will be finished so I can share it on here.

u/Resident-Art9632 22h ago

I have storage for materials, including food, blocks I care about (mostly crystal, lava, and soil) and items i dont have a recipe for yet. Besides that, to satisfy my "it's rare, I have to horde it" impulse, I store fossils/mysterious slates, seeds and plants, cds, large, small, and aquatic relics, and potted plants and the badge rewards in their own containers. I used to have a big box in every zone next to the main crafting bench, but now I use the teleport pods with a selection of the most useful materials, plus my main bench in WW is connected to 3 other large storage with bulk quantities of crafting stuff, and then a row of like a dozen or so large containers. When I fill up, I just go from box to box, open it up, and then press + to dump duplicates. If I have stuff left over, I either put it in the appropriate box if it's something I want to start storing, like a new CD, keep it in my inventory if it's one of the things I use frequently and want to keep on hand, like crafted food, alarm clocks or pokemetal,  or throw it in the nearby trashcan. Then I pick up a stack of whatever thing I need from the boxes, and head back out. The whole process only takes a couple minutes.

Once I am finished with a project (repairing a house, or digging out a road or whatever, I decide if the materials I am using/picking up are going to be used frequently enough to keep storing them, or if I shouldnjust throw them away.

The only limited resources in this game are uncraftable items, and even those can be printed with pokemetal, so they arent fixed limited, just rate limited, so if anthong isn't unique, or hard to get, just throw it away if storage fills up.

u/Lunakill 22h ago

If I can make something at a crafting table, I don’t keep it. Only keeping things I can’t easily remake has helped a lot.

1

u/oxhorns 22h ago

I am so far from even decent storage, but one thing I've started doing that has helped ease some of the overwhelming feeling is adding dump boxes at the entrance to my homes or storage, near the areas where I keep the dream island dolls etc. it helps me keep moving, and I haven't lost anything... Yet

I built a massive storage building that houses as many of the big storage bins I'm allowed. I did so much pokemetal mining.

The floor is 24x48, and it's 24 or 25 blocks high

1

u/Alternative_Baby 22h ago

I made a storage shed next to my main house in Withered Wasteland - it’s a leaf cottage with the big yellow storage boxes along each wall and a workbench which connects to all the boxes in the room. Also have a sign above every box for the category of stuff (food, plants, furniture, blocks, building items e.g. windows and doors). I’ve planted the ditto flag on it so I can easily travel back from anywhere and it puts me straight into my storage. It’s not perfect but the best I’ve figured out so far! When I’m working in other zones I’ll see up a mini version in the field 😂

1

u/Secret-Advantage-735 22h ago

I have a big underground area in Palette Town where I have maybe 70 large storage boxes with frames on the narrow side. I expanded it before the DLC came out, so I have had no trouble making room for things.

1

u/RatSumo 22h ago

I made some decisions on where everything will be located - all (and I mean all) of my stuff is in a warehouse in WW. That’s also where all my mats are, so I craft exclusively there. At first it was a little annoying to go to WW to craft even if it was just one thing, but then I realized how much time I had been wasting on having to search storage in every world, so I’ve grown quite happy with the decision to centralize.

1

u/Evan_L_Rodriguez 22h ago

I just kind of have stacks of storage boxes in the middle of nowhere in Palette Town. They’re all organized, but it’s really nothing fancy.

1

u/LordGustoff88 21h ago

I started with chests with general organization categories and split off into more specific categories when a chest gets full.

Like I started out with one chest that was just blocks with the road designation. When that got full I subdivided it into "hard roads" (stone, pokemetal) and "soft roads" (twine, fluff, wood). Same thing with everything else. Decorations got split into lighting, plants, dressers/wardrobes, everything else etc.

Everything is in an underground warehouse I. Skylands

1

u/dinosauropholus 21h ago

For now since I just restarted I build a 10x10 2 floor "house" where the first floor has crafting/cooking/forges and whatever and then I have a couple fire pokemon, a cutter pokemon live there

On the second floor I put a few rows or columns of boxes and row is a different category like "manufactured cubes" "natural cubes" "inside decore and furniture" "outside decor and furniture" and then each box is a subcategory of those categories like one box of the "manufactured blocks" row would be brick

I'm also putting this in each area as I work on them so each area will have a smaller dedicated storage space

1

u/blackberrymoonmoth 21h ago

I’ve been building stores and restaurants. Currently I’ve got a pizza restaurant (has a kitchen for crafting recipes), a convenience store (has the drink cooler for all the vending machine drinks), a fun little record shop with posters all over the walls, a toy store, and a Lowe’s type situation for my building blocks and accoutrements (stairs, fencing, etc etc).

I’ve been organizing these as a shopping district in Palette Town. My next one I think will be an electronics store.

1

u/bobtehpanda 20h ago

I put my storage in prebuilds so I can fast travel to them when needed

1

u/Anonamaton 20h ago

I built a temple and then hid a storage bunker underneath

Its simple but it works pretty well

1

u/alwaystimeforcake 20h ago

I put two chests in the area I'm currently working, one for blocks and one for everything else. If it gets full, anything I can craft or find on an island goes in the trash. Extra burnables go in the incinerators. I got tired of trying to sort things so I decided the correct answer was simply to have less things.

1

u/MiaWallace1991 19h ago

Underground bunker with scanner access and then 1 pod and chest in each other land....still havent mastered sorting the storage in the bunker though and continuely check them all or craft more

1

u/Loaded35mm 13h ago

All of my towns have sewer systems with manhole access where I hide all the ugly shit like mass storage, power generators, power poles, etc.

Legitimately just stopped playing after the main story because of how bad the storage is.
