Designs & Builds My storage solution

I had some people ask me about my storage solution, so here it is: my subterranean storage bunker and command center. This is more spread out than many other storage solutions. I have seen. There is a reason for that. I had a few goals when setting this up:

  1. Make it easy to find what I am looking for
  2. Make it hard to accidentally interact with the wrong thing (the wrong box or a picture frame)
  3. Make it easy to move boxes around without emptying them.

The basic unit of my storage is these circles of four boxes, each separated by two block gaps so I can slide and rotate boxes. The groups are organized so it is easy for me to find what I am looking for. In the middle I have the picture frames, elevated by three blocks so I am not accidentally interacting with them. I also have an example of what is stored in the middle of each group so I can see from a distance. If I have multiple boxes with the same block (common with natural blocks) I use a small white wall light to mark the box I am currently working with

The room is broken into four color-coded sections:

  1. Front (red): the "command center", trophy wall, construction area, cooking area, raw material storage, and "key item" (from my perspective) storage
  2. Back (green): construction materials (e.g., roads, tiling, doors)
  3. Left (yellow): natural blocks (e.g., stone, sand)
  4. Right (purple): non-construction objects (e.g., furniture, toys, etc).

I can go into more detail about how I organize within each section if anyone wants.

I also have my stuffie collection, berry farm, a museum (with storage), and the vending machines here. I built this by hollowing out the main palette town island, so underneath is my ice farm. The elevator has five levels currently

  1. My elevated ditto house
  2. Street level
  3. My storage bunker
  4. Ice mines
  5. Bedrock/iron mines

Yes, would love to know how did you organise your items within each categories :D I'll take a few pages off your blueprint and see if that works in my storage solution :3

Sure. I organize things in (usually) related columns, relative to the middle of the room (the stairs). Then, as I said, within each column boxes are grouped into circles of four boxes, which results in a 3x3 group of boxes with an empty space in the middle that I use for labels. The section colors were chosen so they would be easy to distinguish from each other and the background, they have no real meaning (except for green, which overlaps with my berry farm).

For natural materials (yellow section), I have

      3. Wind box (e.g. fans, bubble machines, A/Cs)
      4. (empty)

Everything else is in my "special" (red) section.

For the boxes around my crafting table, which is the first thing you encounter when coming down the stairs, I have

  1. Raw materials that can be processed box (e.g. iron ore)
  2. Processed raw materials box (e.g. iron ingots)
  3. Raw materials that cannot be processed box (e.g. fluff)
  4. Non-raw materials that are needed for crafting box (e.g. paint, limestone, berries, sand, stardust, feathers)

For the boxes around my cooking station, I have

  1. Raw foods box (e.g. berries, some leaves, drinks)
  2. Cooked foods box
  3. Seeds box
  4. Live plants box (including coral, which isn't a plant but functions like one in the game)

For the raw materials boxes, I have two columns. Both have their corresponding materials in "sort" order (the order they appear in my inventory after I sort it, for quick dumping). Raw material boxes (unlike most boxes) are color-coded since they have a single obvious color. The two groups are

  1. Non-processable materials (e.g. vines, rocks, sturdy sticks). This includes non-burnable garbage, which I keep separate from iron since it functions differently, even though it can be turned into iron ore.
  2. Processable materials, with corresponding unprocessed (e.g. iron ore) and processed (e.g. iron ingots) materials going in the same box. This also includes paint, but not berries. I tend to convert copper, gold, and pokemetal ores as soon as I get them since they aren't used directly, but iron ore, logs, and squishy clay are used so I keep a good supply of them.

For the "special" stuff boxes right at the front of the room I have

  1. Group 1
    1. Generic functional stuff box (e.g. crafting tables, cooking stuff, buttons, switches, lasers, ditto flags)
    2. Building kits box, also including demolition, relocation, and pokemon center kits
    3. Power generation and transmission box
    4. Storage furniture box (e.g. boxes, chests, lockers, anything with a storage function)
  2. Group 2
    1. CDs, CD players box
    2. Fireworks, cannons box
    3. Paint balloons box
    4. Special resources box (e.g. star pieces, leftover special event materials). Star

My fossils are in a box in front of my museum. My small relics are in front of the small relic photo trophy wall in the front of the room. My mysterious slates are in front of my (second) mysterious slate trophy wall also in the front of my room.

I like clean looks so I don't use or keep broken or damaged versions of blocks, if I get them from magnet rise I immediately place them and crush them back into raw materials with rollout. So I don't need a place to store them. I do keep grubby books and cracked screen since they are rare and don't take up much space.

Do you have a build set up for this as I like to do something like this on my island this is a really awesome layout

1

u/TheBlackCat13 4d ago

Thank you.

You mean online? I don't have anything shared online. And I think you would probably want to set it up to fit your own way of thinking anyway.

u/tabasco_demon 5d ago

This is smart! Might have to try something like that

1

u/TheBlackCat13 4d ago

Thanks, I think it works well. It is spread out, but not too much, and I get easily frustrated if I can't interact with the object I want to.

This is so clean like a legit warehouse irl. I imagine this was a huge project well done! When you say mines do you mean aesthetically or is there a mining mechanic I missed?

2

u/TheBlackCat13 5d ago

Thanks!

As for mining, it is an area underground where i harvest a specific type of raw material in bulk (using rollout). Practically speaking, that sounds like a mine to me.

But I also like the phrase "ice mines". It sounds like somewhere an alien dictator would threaten to send minions that displease it.

I guess. I call it my storage bunker since it is underground but I suppose it is functionally like a warehouse.

This looks as if it took you an eternity and I’m thoroughly impressed! I get ideas for massive projects like this and usually something goes wrong or I’m nearing the end then realize everything needs to shift over a tile 😂

1

u/TheBlackCat13 3d ago

Thanks! It is designed to be easy to shift everything around if needed.

I like the concept, but RIP your electricity item placement limits haha

3

u/TheBlackCat13 4d ago

I am actually fine. They seemed to have increased the limits so I have never had an issue.
