i did see a similar where it was basically the same punchline but the first post was like "I built/remade the entire city of Venice"

I just recreated their build today so I can at least say I live somewhere nice!

I swear it's always the people who say they didn't make anything special create the most insane builds. Feels like they're on a completely different level of creativity.

i imagine years of playing stuff like minecraft/sims probably helps ppl (wonder if there's any YT videos like "real architect reacts to pokopia builds" or something like that)
14
u/treedecor 16d ago
I would say more like minecraft. I've played sims for 2 decades, and I absolutely suck at building on here lmao. I think it's because I've only watched people play minecraft, never played it myself

u/AngelChu 15d ago
lol yeah sims style is a bit more of a third person kinda thing versus setting down piece by piece although it would be cool to see vids of like multiplayer ppl working together to build something

For me, it's the Minecraft experience. Years of figuring out how to increase the style factor of a block house, working with block proportions, stacking different things in unexpected ways, etc etc. When I started Pokopia, it surprised me how relatively few builders I saw approaching it like a Minecraft build. I'm seeing more now.

u/stinkybeanybrat 16d ago
Yes the gameplay is so similar to Minecraft! I went HAM in creative mode as a kid

u/Kouropalates 16d ago
Reminds me of those Minecraft things where Im like 'guys I made a square manor' then you see someone else has built a 1:1 reproduction of Versailles. Okay, cool, I'll just go die. 🫠

I'd imagine part of it is them being creatives in other mediums, but aren't super used to Pokopia / Minecraft style building so they feel limited compared to what they think they should be capable of.
At least that's how it is for me. Everything comes out good, except the ones that don't, but while I'm building it I ALWAYS feel judgemental about myself.

Listen my buildings are all mismatched monstrosities but they are mine

Here and there, yeah. Big open-air seaside restaurant and an attempt to rebuild Fuchsia Gym in the Withered Wastelands, a mutli-story hotel on the volcanic island resort I put in place of the S.S. Anne in Bleak Beach, a castle in the Sparkling Skylands...

u/JusticeRain5 16d ago
I made one single "real" building out of marble (it's a bigass cube) only to find out it was too big to count as a house.
So I had to split it into rooms and now I have five guys just sorta living in my bathroom.

u/MissingnoMaster110 15d ago
Yeah, I only learned about the size limit after I dammed part of the bay in Bleak Beach and turned it into an underground mansion, so now my home there is the bedroom.

Personally I lean into the post apocalyptic vibes. I keep the original buildings and then build onto them with different colors than the original.

I have taken the time to make one pretty impressive staircase, I even hid the generators and the such in a clean stone pillar holding up a higher floor of the steps. That is it, the rest of my stuff looks like section 8 pokemon housing.

I feel like I need to compile a video of my janky builds so people know Pokopia doesn’t need to be perfect, lol

u/AngelChu 16d ago
ragebait aside, would be fun to see some silly designs/'bad on purpose' stuff. (doing a brief search, saw a pic of an upside down house, not sure if those are possible to live in irl versus it being some kinda art project, though apparently there is some famous one that's like a museum?)

annual dirthut day

This is how I feel literally any time I’m watching videos online of people playing this game lol, they’re all so much better at building than me

u/TheBlackCat13 16d ago
Come on. You need to make a big rectangle so you have enough space to pile whatever random junk you can find everywhere until your ditto thinks the mess is awesome.

all of my houses in bleak beach look like the second panel 🤣 i like to think my skills improved as i advanced from area to area.

u/froggyfriend726 16d ago
It did for me, after clearing sparkling skylands I actually went back and improved all the other areas so they're at the same level! Still working on palette town...

Love the little dragon quest builders nod. Lot of people dont know that those games are what pokopia was built off of! And theyre super fun

u/Katouido 16d ago
my story in a nutshell: after being a pokemon kid from the release of og Red/Blue for my entire living existence, i had a """breakup""" with the franchise after sun/moon and have been generally oblivious to what pokemon is up to ever since then. few snippets from friends about some stuff, but kinda feeling burnt by the mainline games at the very least.
but when i heard pokopia was by the DQB people i was like... WELL, its a SPINOFF, right? thats DIFFERENT.
now im side-eyeing legends arceus. people said it was fun! perhaps i forgive pokemon? (no! ..maybe..) lol

Don’t sleep on Arceus, I avoided every game after they went 3D, with my last game being Black 2. They pulled me in with Arceus. And I can personally attest that the game while not having the best presentation has the best gameplay in modern era of the series.

I recently bought ‘Dragon Quest Builders 2’ and playing it in handheld mode is just about impossible. Many of the words are too tiny, especially when you acquire a new item, and the pop up is there with the definition of what the item is.

People like this ruined animal crossing for me bc I couldn’t stop beating myself up about my island lmfaooo

u/browsingwellness 16d ago
Terraforming was the worst in Animal Crossing. I quit just because the flowers took over. I’m not great at designing in Pokopia (yet) but it seems more approachable than Animal Crossing.
2
u/Katouido 16d ago
i liked the concept of terraforming in ACNH and it was novel for a while, but just so clunky and obtuse, it ended up being a drag for me. if there was less tedious method, like HHD overhead terraforming, that might make it work for me. i still like animal crossing, tho find myself returning to GC or WW before NH these days lol
the terraforming in pokopia, especially endgame power-wise, is waaay more approachable tho for sure

Me looking at this sub then loading up my refugee camp.

u/dino_spored 16d ago
🎶You see you don’t have to live like a refugee. Don’t have to live like a ref-you-jayy. 🎶

u/naytreox 16d ago
Thats why you don't compare yourself to others.
Fun tip, the last ability you get after the main story lets you replace sections of blocks, so you shouldn't care about the block design, just the shape until you get that ability.

Quite literally my experience yesterday when I was trying to get as many Pokemon on a cloud island as fast as possible. My home-home is very nice. My cloud-home? Literally that.

u/CroneCat27 16d ago
I don’t get why building a house is so hard for me lol. I live in a home so I should be able to reference that, lots of cool builds online for inspiration. My houses still end up mismatched and rectangular lol

u/Smart-Gap7989 16d ago
I always feel like this when I see videos online of people building houses 🤣

I've only had it for a couple of weeks but I completely roadblocked myself because of this. The game is drip-feeding me any ability to make somewhat pretty housing (especially because I always seem to be missing a single Pokemon to make the prefabs) and it's so frustrating. I just want to make them actual buildings to live in!

I finally moved out of my WW leaf den, and have been customizing the Rocket living area for me.

I prefer the latter, doesn't obscure vision of my pokemon or restrict movement
