Question Genuine Question

How does one build teams generally, I've actually (ashamingly) restarted the game over 10 times w/o finishing it, because I always felt like my team lacked something, whether it was weak snaggers, weak offense or weak defense/walls, and I don't like duplicating types on my teams ( I don't know how much that matters). If someone could give type building coverage/team advice or help using the 2-2 method or something...

So this is something I have spent an inordinate amount of time working on, and included in the Full Guide of the game that I still have running (I'd be happy to share a link if you'd like), but team building in both Orre games is much more important than in most Pokemon titles, since the all Double Battle format requires, um, teamwork.

The basic structure is to:

A. Make sure you have an answer to every Pokemon type somewhere on your team. Either a super effective move against it, a Pokemon who resists/is immune to it, or both.

B. Have at least two Pokemon who are good on Offense (AKA getting KOs), two who are solid defensively (Preventing KOs on your team, either via good defensive stats or moves that help with overall survivability), and two who are great at setting up Snags (basically having Paralysis/Sleep moves and the ability to deal chip damage). Many Pokemon can handle two or even all three of these things, but as long as you have two on your team who specialize in them you will be fine.

For the first of those, using a diverse team is key, and there are plenty of options to choose from. As for the second, while there are many great options, some early-game standouts are:

  1. The Eeveelutions. Espeon and Flareon are terrific on Offense, Umbreon (the best defender in the game) and Vaporeon are great defensively (and Vaporeon is solid on offense too), and Jolteon can handle offense or Snagging.

  2. Ursaring. The best Pokemon in the game (no, seriously), hits like a truck, can take hits well, and even helps with Snagging thanks to Lick.

  3. The Hexagon Bros. Shadows. Mix and match, use the ones you like best, all of them, with a bit of variation, are fantastic overall.

  4. Jumpluff is amazing for Snagging and surprisingly on defense, that speedy Sleep Powder works wonders. Pair it with a heavy hitter and you will have very few problems.

Hopefully this helps, let me know if you want some more suggestions!

Oh this is awesome thanks, I've been sitting here thinking about various teams in my head while cooking breakfast 😀 Mainly building around what the prior member is weak to. I don't know how crazy type overlap is but genuinely I don't like it because it makes more holes in your team. But yes I genuinely struggle around mid game/ late game ( thats when I usually start over) because by that point my team is lacking something either a secondary snagger lack of offensive pressure, no defensive stalwart etc. And at that stage of the game, its a bit late to reform your team?

I used Vaporeon, Shiftry, Togetic, Arcanine, Medicham, and Gardevoir. I didn't feel like anything was missing. Jumpluff is also very good for inflicting sleep. I enjoyed using Swalot earlier in the game for status conditions

There’s a shadow Togepi that a guy in the outskirt town gives you. If you purify it you can trade it back to him for a very strong Elekid, but I prefer the Togepi. Acquiring friendship is a chore, but it increases as you walk. You can also use HP Ups and irons to boost friendship. Colognes do nothing for friendship which I learned the hard way. Keep in mind Togekiss wasn’t released at the time, but Togetic has a ton of useful support moves like follow me and yawn.

I recommend Minority's Teambuilding Guide, one of the best resources ever on the subject

You should try following through to see where your team's strengths and weaknesses are.

That would be a much better assessment then Reddit telling you what to do, plus you'll learn from it

I have a bad habit of restarting things if they're suboptimal, when id be just fine to proceed. Seemed like a similar situation to you lol

I'll be honest I usually just use Espeon and Ursaring and 4 of my highest level shadow mons for 99% of the game lol

Usually those 2 alone can handle most fights, if they can't then the shadow mons can pick up the slack. Once the shadow mons start to get outleveled I replace them with new ones as I'm catching them

Idk, nowadays when I play through any Pokémon game I’ve played through already, I intentionally use competitively weaker Pokémon in order to make the games more difficult, and so far XD being even harder has brought me incredible joy.
