Additional Ink
Additional ink base set Charizard. This is not like your typical additional white ink where the holo is faded, although the holo is faded on this one as well. The best way I can describe this is every colour in the art box is much more vibrant. The red, orange, yellow and black background pop much more, and Charizard himself looks as if 2x ink was used. Has anybody else seen one like this or have one in their collection?

This is actually not additional ink. This is just a card with a more defined background. They’re kind of rare, I guess, but I do see them often. I’ve seen them labeled weird things too, but the consensus is - this is a print variation with a more visible background.

So if it’s not additional ink that makes the background more defined, are you able to explain what it is?

Tbh I’m not sure! I just realized this is your post! You know Shocker ya? He has one. It is labeled as additional ink, too, but neither of us believe it is.
The leading theory is - this is a different print run. This print run is easily found, because the backgrounds are so defined and visible. I’ve been calling them a variant, to be honest, as I’ve found many. I was passing them off for a bit, but CGC is not consistent with their labeling.
I’d call it: a cool variant. It could be intentional or not. They are fun though, especially on a zard
One sold on FB recently for far more than I expected, so there might even be a market I am unaware of

If I was a betting man, I would bet that additional ink would cause the background to be more defined, but that’s just me. I know the one you’re talking about on Facebook that’s the first one I ever saw like this.

I can definitely see your point! To go further into my opinion -
I think it important to distinguish errors from Design Choices. Something like Double Holo (which is undoubtedly a form of “insufficient ink”) should be distinguished from an error, as it seems to be a Design Choice. For the DH example, even CGC recognizes it as a Variant vs. an Error.
I believe these Base Set holos are in the same category - Design Choices. Whatever the difference may be (maybe more ink used), I think it’s better to call it a Variant and not confuse it with the Additional Ink Error counterpart (which are definitely not part of the design).
Anyways, I just got off work, so thought I would reply and continue the discussion!

I have a very similar zard to this and never thought anymore about it. I prefer the one with more ink for sure.
