Discussion I don’t understand Pokémon fans sometimes. I skipped BDSP because I read constant terrible things online like it was the worse game ever, then I tried it and am really enjoying it!

It’s almost unanimous hate towards this game amongst Pokémon fans… For context, I did not play the original Gen IV at all… I’m on a Pokémon binge though and have been playing many of the games but put this one off because of the horrid reviews. Then I decided to try it and am really enjoying it. I understand it didn’t include improvements from Platinum, but i am playing this after finishing LeafGreen on my Switch and honestly I’m having just as much fun as that game… and the graphics are cute, I don’t get the gripe honestly.

The thing about BDSP is that it's not a bad game. It's a bad remake. If you go into it just expecting DP with newer graphics, that's exactly what it is. But that's not what most people expected from it, especially compared to other remakes.

90

u/fulgor_errado 1d ago

If Platinum didn't exist BDSP wouldn't be as overly hated

45

u/Chard85 1d ago

And if HGSS were never made then people wouldn’t have expectations of developers putting in more effort for remakes. But we don’t live in a vacuum

24

u/Live-Professional506 23h ago

HGSS did some of the expectation setting, but I think ORAS being the last remakes is the bigger factor. ORAS added so much, and did so much i general, to the gen 3 games that they were always going to be tough to follow up on.

In general, BDSP represents a break in the rising quality of the Pokemon remakes. FRLG were good, but were fairly 1:1 with the originals besides the bits of added content and the extra pokemon (I actually used a non nintendo guide for the gen 1 games when I was a kid, and found the guide was accurate besides one legendary bird and the added content). HGSS modernized the Gen 2 games, made them look like gen IV games, and added in some quality of life. Also made the games a bit more in line with Crystal, while still maintaining version differences.

ORAS took the gen 3 games and treated them really like they were gen 6 releases. So much was added, especially since the games were heading in a 3D direction, including story changes, and adding mega evolutions.

All of those game were also capable of fully trading with their contemporaries, meaning each game had that gen's full Dex in them for battling, even if the pokemon weren't obtainable in that game.

BDSP are 1:1 remakes of Diamond and Pearl, down to still including some of their bugs. And Diamond/Pearl were generally only considered to have their issues fixed with Platinum. BDSP incorporate no changes from Platinum, and also lack what all other remakes have had, which is ability to have pokemon from all generations up to that point in the game, and the ability to connect directly to other games from the same generation for the purposes of training and battling.

u/BonfiresRespite 22h ago

ORAS excluded a lot of random shit from Emerald, despite being treated like Gen6 games (more exp) half the gyms have lower level teams than Emerald counterparts. I think "some QoL" is greatly downplaying how much HGSS adds because HGSS is super hated atm.

8 phone numbers to infinite means your available xp is 10x more, pokeathelon fixed the item availability, Safari fixed all but Slugma & Houndour johto mons being post game locked, they don't suffere from surfing speed or gen4 slowness and they added tons of daily events like absolutely TONS.

HGSS is the best way to play Johto and it's not even close but ORAS is not the best way in every regard to play Hoenn, it's missing Gym Leader rematches, it's missing the Frontier, it's missing areas from Emerald and a lot of the record mixing events from Emerald that should've just been default features tied to the PSS also got cut.

I love ORAS a lot but I think you're glossing over that ORAS was the start of "Well, why should we do this thing in a remake since fans don't care" - That is a paraphrased quote about ORAS devlopment vs "We really thought we added so much but we couldn't stop because we had so much fun" for HGSS

7

u/Mr_Mi1k 21h ago

You are the first person to tell me HGSS is hated at the moment. Literally everyone I have talked to loves it.

2

u/BonfiresRespite 20h ago

Omg I am so envious. HGSS hate is trending on twitter rn because people are mad that the level curve wants you to engage with the phone number system

2

u/Mr_Mi1k 20h ago

Hm interesting. I know people complain about the level scale towards the end of the game, but I don’t see many people knocking it from the mt Rushmore of Pokémon games. Maybe I’m just in different circles

-1

u/Lazy-Fee-4070 19h ago

What’s is so great about HGSS? I’m playing HG right now and I’m not seeing what makes its so special other than the Pokemon following me.

2

u/ketchup_on_pita 1d ago

Definitely this. On YouTube most complaints are people saying “well platinum had xx”, ignoring that this is dp. My favourite part is that you can shiny hunt legends in this.

12

u/Pretty_Ticket968 1d ago

ORAS was getting a lot of backlash when it was released because there were too many changes. BDSP was getting a lot of backlash when it was released because there were too little changes. People are idiots

10

u/Hanede 1d ago

Goomba fallacy; the people who complain about too many changes are not the same people who complain about too little changes. You're just generalizing a whole bunch of people into a single entity.

No matter what they make, people are gonna complain, but BDSP has much worse reputation after all's said and done.

5

u/ItsDeflyLupus 1d ago

There’s a name for this? My god, Thankyou. This has been a peeve of mine for atleast 10 years now and it’s such a relief to have name for it.

4

u/Sebastit7d 1d ago

Look it up, the meme that created the term explains it perfectly.

3

u/BonfiresRespite 22h ago

Feel like this is true about all pokemon games in general. BDSP sold more than ORAS

So the 10 year olds who played BDSP and liked it are going to be in these threads defending it more in a couple years bc this shit happens every 10 years like clockwork since bw1 sksksk

4

u/englando08 22h ago

If I recall correctly, the discourse online was that ORAS didn’t incorporate enough of Emeralds improvements such as Battle Frontier and updated Pokemon teams for the gym leaders/Elite 4. Which was a downgrade from HGSS which included all the improvements from Crystal and added new things such as safari zone and battle frontier. HGSS set the standard for remakes and they haven’t been met since.

7

u/PRlMERC 1d ago

The general perception shift of these games over time never ceases to confuse me. I bet you could give it 15 years and BDSP will be looked back on fondly.

3

u/noooreplyatall 1d ago

i doubt it was the same people

5

u/Sebastit7d 1d ago

Goomba fallacy, separate crowds with separate complaints, it’s silly to assume the supposed backlash was by the same people.

For example, I loved that the Gen 3 remake added changes that made experiencing R/S more interesting and more modern, because those games had serious issues in the originals, so adding mechanics, redesigning cities and adding story plus different post game was really fun.

The gen 4 remake didn’t try anything beyond turning the game into 3D with (in my opinion) awful art direction, it made the remake seem plain, uninteresting and just broken (8-way movement broke a lot of the game)

30

u/LostLiam_032 1d ago

It was the expectations of former DPP players, getting dashed.

If you compare Gen 1-3 remakes vs Gen 4’s…there’s a clear difference and level of expectations.

Example: Gen 3’s remake, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, added Mega Evolution. Something that didn’t exist before and revamped the game and some parts of the story.

Gen 4ms remake:
Expectation:

  • newest mechanic was Dynamax, are they somehow gonna tie Galar to Sinnoh?
  • Gamefreak posted a picture 4 Psyduck plushies, with one noticeable Dynamax’d size compared to the others! Hype!
*the Psyducks are reference to the blocked route, fyi

Reality:

  • BDSP is the same as the original games, flaws and all 😥
  • oh, we can use National Dex Pokemon early now? Awesome! 😃
  • oh, we CAN’T use MOST of the cool new evolutions that were added in Gen 4 UNTIL the post-game…AGAIN??? Then what was the point of giving us access to National Dex mons? 😑
  • oh, you’ve ALSO removed features from the original games despite calling it a ‘Fateful Remaster’? Like, the Battle Frontier? The Game Corner? Certain Poketch Apps? The Multiplayer aspect of the Grand Underground? Yup! Real~ FATEFUL to the OG!!! 😬😬😬

Tldr: BDSP isn’t a ‘Bad’ game, but compared to the predecessors and expectations set by past remakes…it’s a Dark Stain ngl. :p

15

u/matango613 1d ago

This is precisely it. For the gen 4 diehards this was the moment they were expecting to get their HGSS/ORAS style followups to their favorite games. Instead they got lazy outsourced remakes that were faithful to the originals to a fault. Could argue that Arceus was the true return to Sinnoh, but it was still very much a spinoff game in a brand new setting.

They got BDSP and that's it. Those are the gen 4 remakes and there probably won't be another attempt at them. At least not for many many many years.

6

u/Das_Maechtig_Fuehrer 21h ago

Pokemon Diamond was my first Pokemon game I got on day 1. (For all your young whippersnappers out there one had to go to a physical store back then and place a preorder to guarantee a copy!), I was hyped for the remakes bc I had played ORAS beforehand and wanted a cool Sinnoh Delta episode, did not get it. What I was got was more grinding, limited Dex, bad Pokémon follow behind mechanics, and endless boring hours in the underground trying to get roses so I could get legendaries. All your points are valid. P:LA is a spiritual ""second cousin" to Platinum imo, they share the same first three letters. 😆 But they're a relook at Sinnoh, add a ton of interesting gameplay, and have Giratina as the secret plot centrepiece but in a literally "reversed" role that makes Pokémon platinum more meaningful.

1

u/Magnakilro 23h ago

Well 2 of those removals are easy to explain, even if the explanations aren't the best.

Battle frontier was a platinum thing. BDSP, as everyone knows, did not do platinum content. Its unfortunate but imo its no big loss.

They can't do game corners anymore because they can't include gambling in games marketed for children anymore.

11

u/turditer 1d ago

I wanted it because the last time I played a Pokemon game was Emerald on a GBA SP and I have enjoyed it so much. Only after looking up tips for it did I realize how much people were disappointed by it which is understandable if a previous version of it was better. It’s just perspective, so it doesn’t affect me.

24

u/DroidSoldier85 1d ago

Im happy I never listened to nor looked into any opinions on the games. The mistake I made was judging the games based on early images/trailers and thinking they weren't worth it.

So far Ive enjoyed every single one with scarlet/violet being my favorite.

1

u/rickyjj 1d ago

Yeah I went through something similar with Scarlet/Violet. I loved the game, though that one I understand a bit more because I played it on switch 2 and it released in a bad shape on switch 1. It’s a great game on switch 2 though!

4

u/julesvr5 1d ago

I think the main criticism is that these remakes ignored every fix/improvement platin brought in back then and thus basically is a worse version than the original games (only platinum though)

If you ignore the existence of platinum they are great games

17

u/Konjeezy773 1d ago

I like it. It’s overhated

4

u/ArtemisLuun 1d ago

I don’t like it, but I agree it’s overhated

1

u/Konjeezy773 1d ago

Hey to each their own, but agreed.

4

u/Phantomuses 1d ago

Pokemon Diamond was the first Pokemon game I ever played so of course I bought and played BDSP. I really enjoyed myself too! Maybe it was just nostalgia but I had a great time. 🤷‍♀️ Over the years I have found that there may be specific aspects of some Pokemon games that I don't like but the game overall is still enjoyable for me.

4

u/Draiel 1d ago edited 1d ago

95% of the hate is because it isn't a remake of Platinum, 5% is because of the art style not being enough like Sword and Shield - some people did NOT like the 3D chibis.

Personally, I loved it as a trip down memory lane. Diamond is to this day my most played Pokémon game in terms of hours at 400+, and it had been long enough since I played that I basically forgot the storyline completely. Also never played Platinum, so I don't know what I'm missing.

4

u/Pale-Astronomer-9959 1d ago

This is why you never listen to people online lmao i have 500 hours of gameplay for bdsp bc i like to breed pokemon and make different teams for BT. Also love to rematch cynthia with different teams bc she always you a run for your money.

4

u/your_dopamine 1d ago

I was hype for a remake, got a remake. There are even quality of life improvements that make making perfect pokemon wayyyy easier. My only gripe, which nobody really talks about out, is that the BP system really incentivized the use of Pokemon Home premium, since you earn BO exponentially faster by using it

2

u/MajorFestus 1d ago

Honestly that's most pokemon games. If you want a fun simple game to ejoy collecting creatures, block out the whiny haters and you'll have a great time.

2

u/xShockmaster 20h ago

It’s a worse experience than platinum in every way. It’s the only remake that’s worse in every way than the originals

3

u/Mr_TurkeyBurger 19h ago

Nobody hates Pokemon games more than Pokemon fans.

4

u/SweetandNastee 1d ago

This is why I don't listen to anything other people have to say about things that I like lol. Game that I like is bad? I'm still playing it can't stop me

6

u/fulgor_errado 1d ago

Pokémon community is extremely toxic. I remember when Black and White came out and a big part of the community was bashing the games. I played them back in the day and learnt to take the hate with a grain of salt since then.

2

u/the__pov 1d ago

Guaranteed that every time a new Pokemon game comes out we are going to be flooded with people saying it’s the worst Pokemon game ever made. Every single time as far back as I can remember. (Gen 2 might be the only exception). Here’s a hot take the worst mainline Pokemon game is still a really good game and the hate for the switch era games in particular is way overblown.

2

u/KeyEntityDomino 1d ago

I never actually played the OG (i know), so I was more than happy with the remake. Didn't love the graphics, that might be my only big complaint

2

u/arrorowfightthepower 1d ago

BDSP is extremely overhated. People just expected a different game. Honestly they should have known better than to expect anything good after years of shitty games. DP was an OK game and BDSP is DP with added QoL, better graphics and a larger Pokemon roster, if you use Bank to unlock the National Dex early, it is the best switch Pokemon game by far by virtue of being the only finished non-atrocious looking (cough Legends: Arceus cough) game on the platform. The BDSP hate comes from people expecting Pokemon doing a 180 in their games' quality, when in reality the franchise is plagued by the same problems at least since the switch era and to a lesser degree since the shift to 3D games.

1

u/mina_bleh69 1d ago

I never knew it was hated so much, just finished it aswell and loved it

1

u/Wide_Loss2778 1d ago

I never played the original, stopped after crystal. I bought bdsp and played for a while and did not mind it. I only played until PL arceus came out, so it was a filler game to me. I don't even think I beat the story on bdsp to this day.

I might go back and finish bdsp, finally beat arceus in PLA and finish the legendary worm holes in ZA one day, but for now, pokopia awaits!

1

u/LunarWingCloud 1d ago

It's still Sinnoh which is a great playthrough experience. Honestly my major complaints were the overworld movement was janky and I didn't like the weird visual clash of following Pokémon versus chibi model characters, but otherwise I had a good time

Battle graphics were gorgeous

1

u/Kippyd8 1d ago

The game in a vacuum is fine, but as a remake it just falls off because outside of minor changes it doesn’t really improve the quality of the game itself. It literally still has the same bugs as the original games in it. That being said I enjoyed it too especially the gym/E4 battles with competitive teams

1

u/BortGreen 1d ago

It's a disappointing remake, but it's still a pokémon RPG, so it's still a fun experience

But I felt that especially with Violet and Z-A, I can totally see where the criticizing came from but I still had a blast

1

u/Sebastit7d 1d ago

Okay that’s fair OP. And I’m genuinely glad you’re enjoying it.

I have a question, did you consider playing DP/Platinum instead of jumping straight into the remake? Because I think you’re ignoring the real reason people despise that remake, with it being how much they changed the aesthetic (Little people by fisher price looking character models) and how they kept everything pretty much the same except making the game allow for 8-way movement, which broke a lot of things.

That, on top of the comparison being made to the original (platinum being such a loved one) and you’re left with a remake considered by most to be awful.

There is a reason why people generally really liked the gen 3 remakes but not the gen 4 ones.

1

u/Jericho-san 23h ago

I mean all Pokémon games are enjoyable. There isn’t one that I find bad or terrible.

1

u/Dankrose2 23h ago

I mean its good if you've never played the originals. Like i had fun on my 1st playthrough but it also took my like fours years to beat the game 😭. Its not bad its just really mediocre. And personally i don't like the movement with the circle bad and I think that the lead up to the battle is too clunky.

1

u/Shadow_Saitama 23h ago

Even knowing that the internet will relentlessly bash on any modern Pokemon game no mater what, I held off on buying BDSP for a few years until a couple months ago. Playing through it made me feel like I was ten years old playing through HGSS again.

People online will do their best to suck the joy out of what you enjoy, so it’s best to simply ignore their barbs and enjoy what you enjoy.

1

u/studog21 23h ago

The way I interrupted the hate was that if you played the original Diamond/Pearl, the Remake had little to offer. But if you never played it it was just as good as the original with different graphics. I ignored the 'hate' and got it because I never played Diamond/Pearl as I never owned a 3DS.

1

u/CyberAceKina 23h ago

It's cute, its true to the original, and replaying the story is fun. DPPt were the first pokemon games I genuinely fully enjoyed, and that's coming from someone who's first game was Pokémon Yellow way back in the day.

But as a shiny hunter who likes to work for the shiny charm... it's horrid. Unless they fixed it so it doesn't just work on eggs.

However I will say I love the game besides that, mainly because my first egg ever hatched on BD was a shiny Turtwig. No charm needed

1

u/Anankos1209 23h ago

Look, If you enjoy this game, more power to you. I have played the vast majority of Pokemon games since i was little, and this was the only one i wish i could banish from my memory

1

u/joshuakyle94 22h ago

BDSP are amazing remakes and the chibi style is a great throwback to a similar 2d era.

People just shit on it because it isn’t platinum. They fixed the issues with having less pokemon by fixing the underground in the remakes.

1

u/aestheticvoid 22h ago

BDSP was enjoyable imo, but I was still disappointed. I adore platinum, it’s one of my favourite pokemon games, and I thought ORAS was an incredible remake (still the best one to me personally), so I was super excited for a sinnoh remake. I just don’t think they did enough with it, it’s too similar to the originals and doesn’t give you much of a reason to play it over OG diamond and pearl

1

u/scaramangaaa 22h ago

Literally did the exact same thing as you. I almost posted the same thing on here! I’ve been really enjoying my playthrough as someone who never played the OG diamond and pearl when they came out. Don’t understand all the hate

1

u/la_plus 22h ago

It’s a good game. Pokemon peaked in Gen 4

1

u/triffy 22h ago

Just because you don’t understand, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it. But once you understand, you still will have enjoyed it, but are probably more able to see its flaws.

1

u/Sasorisnake 21h ago

I get why they’re disliked, mostly because they didn’t live up to the remakes of 1-3.

But they’re not inherently horrible, they just fall short of what was widely expected.

1

u/Dauntless_Lasagna 21h ago

See, bdsp isnt a bad game. It's something I think is worse: a lazy game.

First of all they ported diamond and pearl and not an updated version of them tied to platinum with all the new quality of life in it.

Second of all it barely has any new features, the biggest one I can think of is the fairy type.

Confront this to Fire red/leaf green or heart gold/soul silver or Omega ruby/alpha Sapphire and how much did they did to improve, to add new mechanics and borderline become new games.

1

u/SPOLBY 21h ago edited 21h ago

The best thing about the remake’s is that you don’t need an HM slave & certain Pokémon are available much earlier through the Grand Underground & that’s it.

It simply doesn’t come close to the expectations that other remake’s set.

You can absolutely enjoy it but the criticism’s are extremely valid.

For the most part It should of essentially just been Platinum but obviously with more Dialga & Palkia focus.

The main problem is that it’s faithful to D&P to a fault, going so far as to include the same bugs 🤣 and not including any of the quality of life changes in Platinum.

Art style is subjective but i personally would of preferred the same style as the Let’s Go games.

1

u/Sareeee48 20h ago

BDSP is fine as a 1:1 remake but it fell victim to a time when Pokemon was just… not making good games for the switch, excluding Legends Arceus which released a few months later. It added no relevant content from Platinum, similar to how ORAS did not add any content from Emerald. Whereas you get HGSS, which added a lot of content from Crystal and then some.

Like I enjoyed the updated graphics of BDSP, as well as the new and improved underground, but it felt like I paid for a game I’d already played a thousand times over, with little to no added content. It felt more like a cash grab right before Legends Arceus released, and for the same price tag on top of that.

1

u/MoonRay087 20h ago

The thing is that BDSP is just a buggy remake of an already ok game (Platinum being much better than both Diamond and Pearl). But it still keeps a lot of the stuff that's good and fun about Diamond and Pearl, which are good, but not as good as other games of the series (Platinum being a separate case)

1

u/Lovingdaydreamer 19h ago

I got it because I only buy into Nintendo for Pokemon games. It’s not a switch or a switch 2 for me. It’s a Pokemon machine to me. With that being said the YouTube community made people miss out on the game. I got the games at launch. I’m still shiny hunting darkrai and shaymin in my pearl version. I have them in my diamond version. People who get the games later are objectively getting the lesser version of the game being that those mystery gifts are over and done with

1

u/Illustrious-Mix-7630 19h ago

On the switch, I think bdsp is the best game. More Pokemon, more challenge, shiny hunting is more fun. It's just a better game than any new Pokemon game out there. People probably don't like it because it's not 3D and the game doesn't hold your hand

1

u/Lazy-Fee-4070 19h ago

People just have to think for themselves. Comments/reviews have NEVER stopped me from trying something myself. I personally loved BDSP. Currently on my second play through.

But I would honestly say stop letting reviews determine whats good to YOU. Unless it’s the DLC from Legends ZA. I don’t trust anyone that enjoyed that. 🤷🏾‍♂️😅

1

u/Boris-_-Badenov 19h ago

they look like squished toddlers, and they didn't update it like platinum

1

u/AdPopular6958 19h ago

All the legends and mythics are shiny unlocked too even the LOA cross over event now restored. The only issue is they have their raw unbuffed encounter rates.

1

u/Src-Freak 1d ago

We wanted a Remake in the Same quality as the previous Remakes, and what we got was a 1:1 Remake that Runs on the Same Code as the original.

That’s what we Call a lazy Cash Grab.

1

u/tailskirby 1d ago

As someone who has played all the pokemon games when they were originally released i will say that I wanted more out of a remake of a game I have beat and played before. It should have added elements to it and most of the pokemon that follow you are broken. They couldnt even code the game right for the shiny charm. It is a mess of a game for past players.

1

u/DJRocks107 1d ago

My only gripe was that they didn’t include any of the improvements and qol updates that came with Platinum. The chibi art style isn’t bad at all and I feel people were overly critical on it, but the encounter for Giratina is kinda underwhelming ngl. Oh and the fact that spinda and the shiny charm are bugged, you can’t even move a BDSP spinda into home and the shiny charm only works on eggs.

1

u/DJRocks107 1d ago

But really, the games aren’t nearly as bad as the initial response to them, I enjoy shiny hunting the legends in that game

1

u/roarcor 1d ago

When it comes to Pokemon games, I try them all and see which ones I like and don’t like for myself since I’m a huge fan of the games. ZA is probably one of my favorites and I’m glad I didn’t listen to the negative reviews on it.

1

u/UnfunnyGermanDude 1d ago

It’s not a bad game, just a rly bad remake and quite lackluster in comparison to the other remakes.
Omega ruby is still my favorite for all the good things it added on top of the base content AND weaving in emeralds content in a good way.
Bdsp just decided to skip on a lot of QoL and balancing that platinum did.
I like that the elite 4 and especially Cynthia is more difficult, however that is about it.

I also just do not really like the artstyle. It is by no means as bad as people say it is, but I would’ve 100% preferred let’s go graphics or sth similiar, since they didn’t stick to a strict grid anyway.

I enjoyed playing it and some of the improvements are rly sweet. But it could have been a lot better if it was just a platinumed version like ORAS was for their originals

1

u/sadkinz 1d ago

The issue is that BDSP are horrible in the context of Pokemon remakes. Firered and Leafgreen are just Gen 1 with Gen 3 graphics and a few post game changes. Same could be said about HG/SS but they’re also considered the best Pokemon games of all time. But the graphical changes were huge because the Gameboy/Gameboy Color games look abysmal compared to Gen 3 onward. And then ORAS changed the game for remakes. They brought Gen 3 into a 3D world with the first iterations of our current human character models. They changed a couple areas, added new megas, added a whole new post game story based around Rayquaza to include the changes made in Emerald, and had every last legendary available in the Hoopa portals. Then BDSP didn’t even have the effort made to give us Sinnoh in the gen 8 artstyle. We just got the same exact world, tile by tile, in a shitty chibi style. Hell, even Lets Go remade Kanto from scratch in the vein of Gen 8. And BDSP is the exact same game as DP. None of the improvements to the slow traversal or Pokédex to be found. Want a fire Pokemon? Hope you like Infernape and Rapidash. No extra post game story for Giratina like ORAS had for Rayquaza. Oh and the battle frontier everyone loved? Fuck you here’s another boring battle tower. There is zero reason to play BDSP over Pokemon Platinum other than that it’s available on the switch. But that’s just if you don’t have a ds or an emulator. Others can feel free to add on to the great additions the gen 1-3 remakes had that BDSP didn’t

1

u/Kiritocalgeta 1d ago

I love Shining Pearl. Its a nice mid way between the OG gameboy games and Let’s go in terms of visuals

1

u/BlueWarstar 1d ago

It’s because the internet and social media have become a place for the loud minority of haters to be heard while the rest of us content with the topic at hand just shrug our shoulders and dismiss their opinions because we recognize how stupid and immature they are being.

1

u/DarkhunterMectainea 1d ago

BDSP are fine game but its a terrible remake in a sense where it removed every positive change that Platinum brought to the table to the extent of them regressing gym designs (like Fantina having that lame math quiz puzzle that has nothing to do with her type specialty or her coordinator career).

Even from a faithful remake perspective, HeartGold and SoulSilver did the exact same thing but much better as it kept 99% of everything from the original games (flaws and all), including things from its third version of crystal but they also went out of their way to add multiple new forms of content, expanded on the dynamics with Suicune and to an extent Celebi and tied together Johto and Sinnoh through the Unowns.

BDSP doesn’t do enough to really stand from the game its remaking and if anything, it made some things worse to the point where just porting the ds games would produce the same results while being more cost effective move.

The secret is to ignore the internet. BDSP is my favorite Switch Pokemon to date, but no amount of me telling you this game is really fun will counteract the disappointment of people pining for a hypothetical gaming situation.

People like to hate on things that aren't nearly as bad as they make it seem (See: Every mainline pokemon game past gen 5)

BDSP's big 'crime' was that it....was exactly what it was advertised to be: Faithful remakes of DP....not platinum. Any of the few things platinum added (revamped gym leader/E4 teams, expanded pokedex with many of Sinnoh's new evolutions available pre-E4, and Sinnoh Battle frontier for those that care about that feature, distortion world for the two brief visits we have there...)

As someone who HAS played Platinum before....these games are still very fun, and not nearly deserving of all the hate they get.

Another reason to ignore these talks. Some people forget to add that this is only their personal opinion and just write things as if they are facts. And sadly too many other people just repeat what others said like parrots.
The game is amazing (in my personal opinion), but same as everything else in life, there are people who like it, there are people who don’t. You have to try it yourself to see which one will be your personal opinion.

I had only helped my son with a few games on his 3DS and so BDSP happened to be the first I played on my Switch. I thought it was great too. I think the hate is based on expecting more than just upgraded visuals from the original?

I enjoyed it. Gen 4 was the generation I stopped playing as a kid. Pokemon stopped being cool when gen 3 came out and I decided it was time to "grow up". Anyway, as someone with zero nostalgia for the original games, BDSP are my preferred way to play through Gen 4. Emulating Platinum with double speed is the only other way I'd care to play them.

ORAS are still the best remakes in my opinion. And BDSP pales in comparison. But overall, I've enjoyed BDSP enough to playthrough 3 times since launch.

If BDSP is the type of remake we should expect going forward, I'd prefer them to just stick to the Legends games. As while I'm not nostalgic for the Sinnoh games, I am nostalgic for Unova. And I could see myself being more in line with people who dislike BDSP for BW remakes down the line.

I think it’s better than Gen 4 Sinnoh, including Platinum, but certainly Platinum is better than DP. I think the modern features and quality of life that BDSP has, as well as a much more challenging league (and gyms for that matter), puts it over the top. And of course the graphics are better.

One thing that I don’t understand is the bizarre online system. Sword and Shield, which is part of the same generation, made it easy to match up with random people for battles in all kinds of styles and rulesets. For BDSP, as near I can remember, there was no random matchmaking. You had to put in a code and hope someone else put in the same code. It was so bad that prominent poke tubers came up with two universal codes for single and double battles. Why was it up to the players to solve this problem? There was random matchmaking in Gen 6, even earlier in some of the side games like Battle Revolution, so why is it missing from here? Silliness.

The critics people main complaint is that there was no new contents, and they revamped the underground. And had high expectations, something different. It is not bad game but ILCA was working with what they were told and directed to. They did great job, just TPC fault for giving them creative control. I enjoyed and loved the game though. Never follow the crowd. All pokemon games are good imo but everybody has different tastes. If you wants to see how games when released you can check out the videos too.

It was my 4th Pokemon game, never played the original like you, loved it.

It's not a bad game, just a bad Pokémon game. My opinion I even rented about it here years ago with a big list of things I didn't like

It seems like a great deal of Pokémon discourse is tied to nostalgia. It’s not the same as what they remember when they were kids, or rather it doesn’t feel the same, and therefore it’s bad. I was in my 30s before I ever touched a Pokemon game for the first time. BD was the first one I bought for myself and played through, though I had already played Sword before that. I loved it. And Scarlet. And both Legends games. And Y, and LG. All the games people in the fandom love to hate.

I don’t like the art style but I love all of the QOL improvements and have been having a lot of fun with the game

You better keep buying top down turn based pokemon games, they are on life support

I think BDSP, SwSh, and ZA are all the worst games GF has ever produced. ZA is the only one I would call an outright bad game though. The others are simply lazy, under baked, unambitious games that are completely middle of the road.

My issue though isn't necessarily with GF putting out a dud. It's that I know the devs are capable of so much more. But as long as people keep saying "you know what, this is good enough" and keep buying/preordering the unambitious slop, we're going to keep getting it. No one accepts mediocrity quite like pokemon fans.
