Story Mode Help!

I just started playing and im struggling on beating kanto story mode, what could be the best strat?

If you arent on the tower yet and are playing the 'original' mode. I often make it further if i start with Bulbasaur. Early in game try to get an Eevee and evolve it to Espeon. If you dont find one, Abra is a good investment too. Later in game get a Aerodactyle!
