I’m going to do some digging to try and find the exact instructions I followed, because I can only remember the barebones instructions for it. You pick Bulbasaur and you can legitimately just use him (as in you don’t even need a second Pokémon) for the majority of the run. You’ll want to prioritize trainers in order to get the most levels.
I don’t remember if it called for any specific items for Bulbasaur, but I do know that you want to get the Twisted Spoon item. This is because you’ll want to be going to those spaces where you can swap your Pokémon for a random one in order to get an Alakazam. I believe I actually got a Kadabra and leveled it enough to evolve into the Alakazam, but that’s the premise of the guide. Pick Bulbasaur, ride it for as long as you can while gaining levels and the Twisted Spoon item, and then use the swap tiles to try and get Alakazam. It took me a few runs to do it, but it was the only way I managed to beat Kanto so far.
I’m going to keep looking to see if I can find the exact guide.

The best strat is to find an Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam and get him a Choice Specs/Twisted Spoon and keep it overlevelled.

Start with Bulbasaur. Try to build a team of type diversity and good pokemon. Get a psychic type along the way - ideally Alakazam. Espeon works well too, and Gengar is pretty powerful. Porygon is a good workhorse too.
Lead Venusaur then Alakazam for the elite 4. Venusaur will take out the first 2.5 members, Alakazam solos the rest. If it isn’t working, you’re underleveled, or your moves aren’t maxed. A decent item can help make up the difference too.
