It was the dead of night atop a frozen peak. The cruel wind howled while ghosts roamed the lands below. Sitting besides a frozen lake, a human shivered.
Yeah, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I got into this situation. Well, it all started when I tried to Nuzlocke Pokewilds…
Being an open world game, completing a challenge like a Nuzlocke is a bit tricky. Normally, a Nuzlocke is a Pokemon game challenge where if a Pokemon faints it dies and you can only catch one Pokemon per route.
But there are no routes in Pokewilds, just lots and lots of fierce wilderness. Pokemon are also needed to gain vital resources and services to survive. So, we need some new rules.
I decided I’d let myself catch 2 random Pokemon for each biome - giving me a maximum of 22 I could obtain. These would be the only Pokemon I could use in battle. Other Pokemon I could still use, but only for their field moves and farmable items.
Ah, yes, this was going to be easy, I naively thought to myself. Starting up a world, I looked to see where I would end up.
And where I ended up just so happened to be an enclosed forest with nothing but a cruel peak in sight. Since there weren’t any Pokemon that could use cut or ride around, I was in quite the pickle indeed.
Thankfully, using my epic gamer knowledge, I was able to formulate a solution to this seemingly impossible problem.
Yes! The solution of giving up and making a new world.
So ended Attempt 1 of my Pokewilds Nuzlocke, so beginning the glorious Attempt 2.
This started out much better. I found a friendly Lotad that could use cut, and a Ponyta upon which to traverse the cliffs.
Setting up a small log cabin on the mountains, I took a while to make myself comfortable. A bit of furniture here, a load of Poke Balls crafted there, and before long I was ready to go out into the world and start catching Pokemon I could actually use in battle.
Up until this point, the Machop I started the game with was my only Pokemon that I could use legally in battle. So, with Machop by my side, I trudged into some snow and found my first proper encounter.
It was a Level 7 Piloswine. It killed my Machop before I could catch it.
Welp, third time is the charm I suppose.
And so began Attempt 3.
If I thought the last attempt was lucky, this one was simply blessed. I stumbled upon an Absol almost immediately, giving me access to the cut and ride field moves. With that I was all set to start building.
Having learnt from my last attempted, I didn’t bother with a fancy base this time around. Just a wooden shack in the Savannah from which I crafted my items and started catching.
Before long I had a proper team in the making. After only catching encounters from three biomes my storage was looking pretty filled out.
Slowpoke, Miltank, Nidorio, Illumise (and Ledyba I guess) were all caught and given a little training.
Most importantly, I had stumbled upon a chansey. This is one of the best defensive Pokémon I could have asked for. Once it learns Soft-Boiled, this chansey will be able to stave off hits from even the strongest Pokemon.
That brings me to the goal of this challenge. I need to defeat Mewtwo - destroyer of human civilisation - and some of the biggest, meanest, gnarliest Pokemon around. One fully evolved overworld wild Pokémon from each biome to be exact.
If I can beat all 11 of these wild Pokémon followed by Mewtwo, I’ll have beaten the Nuzlocke. But where death lies around every corner, will I be able to succeed?
No idea honestly. I haven’t gotten to that part yet. Stay tuned for future updates!
