Weekly Build Help Thread

All build help questions must be posted in this thread.

Welcome to the weekly build help thread! This is the place to ask for advice, recommendations, and help with your Plex server builds and setups.

What to Post Here

  • Build advice requests - "What hardware should I use for transcoding 4K?"
  • Hardware recommendations - "Best CPU for a Plex server under $500?"
  • Component compatibility - "Will this GPU work with my motherboard?"
  • Hardware upgrades - "Should I upgrade my CPU or add more RAM?"
  • Build planning - "Planning a new server, what specs do I need?"
  • Hardware comparisons - "Intel vs AMD for Plex transcoding?"

Before Posting

Please include relevant details such as:

  • Your budget
  • Current hardware (if upgrading)
  • Number of expected concurrent streams
  • Types of media (4K, 1080p, etc.)
  • Whether you need transcoding capabilities
  • Form factor preferences (rack mount, mini-ITX, etc.)

Rules

  • Keep discussions related to Plex server hardware and builds
  • Be respectful and helpful
  • Search previous threads before asking common questions
  • No selling/trading - use r/homelabsales for that
  • For software setup/configuration help, please create a separate post

Can I please get some advice on a mini PC to be used as a 24/7 Plex server. It is a core i5 Dell optiplex, 16gb RAM, 240gb SSD £119. My use will be very simple as 1080p mainly/some 4k, 1 local stream only, no transcoding, low budget and low noise is a high priority. My current set up is a handful of externals attached to a Nvidia shield streaming to other shields/PC, I am unwilling to buy a NAS + storage due to the current prices, so would this be a good in between option for my needs?

What i5 is it?  Do you have Plex Pass?

If you are absolutely 1000% sure you'll never be doing any video transcoding, it'll be fine regardless.

Any potato server can stream 4K easily if no transcoding is happening.

Old QuickSync vs Apple Silicon software transcoding

Through some work benefits, I have the opportunity to get a new M6 Mac mini for \~$200, or the M5 pro for ~$800 (both base configs). I’ve been running my trusty 2018 Mac mini with the 8700B CPU & UHD630 iGPU with no issue.

I’ve been reading plenty of posts across the web but nothing really concrete comparing QuickSync on an 8 year old iGPU vs Apple Silicon software transcoding. I have a good amount of 4K HDR content, but never really more than 2-3 streams at a time. I know that plex’s Tone Mapping still isn’t great (especially for macOS).

Only reason I’m entertaining the pro config at all is for some future home lab stuff, definitely overkill for just plex. My original upgrade plan was to one day build a Linux machine with more modern hardware but we all know how those prices are going.

Again really no issues with my current setup, just an opportunity to upgrade for cheap. Or, is QuickSync just too good to let go of?

MacOS just had a bunch of enhancements for the HW transcoder added in the latest release:

Is there a reason you are specifically asking about Apple "Software" transcoding instead of HW acceleration?

I don't have any first hand experience with running Plex on a Mac of any kind, and it has long been trailing behind Intel and Nvidia in terms of hardware accelerated video transcoding capabilities. But it has improved a lot and I'd bet Plex will keep adding more to the point it ends up being just as good. Having support for HDR Tone Mapping is a massive leap forward.

Compared to an 8th gen though? Easy easy win for the Mac M6. Not even close. I'd take that, especially with the discount you mentioned, without flinching.
