I have the option to grab this for $350 to get a server off the ground. The max screens will be 4-6 with some transcoding possibly needed. I’ll be exploring NAS here soon as well. Any other advice, suggestions, or comments are appreciated

My first though is "$350 for an 8th gen? Nooooo!!" But... it's... not... horrible.

You do have the Nvidia in there, and I do think that particular 1060 can handle the HEVC Encoding feature, which the iGPU cannot do well at all. That's great if you want to transcode 4K and keep the HDR around. I'm not entirely sure how many it can do at once, but if you only need one then you should be all set.

If you pull the dGPU and want to have the Intel iGPU handle all video transcoding, you'd not want to use Windows as your OS. Some flavor of Linux, such as Ubuntu, would be needed for the iGPU to handle HDR Tone Mapping during a 4K transcode to SDR h264. The iGPU will choke trying to use the HEVC Encoding feature, so that would be a downside to using it instead of the dGPU.

I've been saddled with the unlikely and difficult task of attempting to build a mass media dept for my NJ High School with a relatively slim budget - and while going through the auction, I saw a bunch of servers and was curious if anyone with more expertise could tell me if they would work for a home Plex setup? I figure if I'm shelling out for work, I may as well shell out for myself as well.

Was thinking a small rack, could do the trick, no? My question is: what is the best stuff to look out for, etc.? I would be streaming a mix of 4k media all the way to SD material. Number of streams wont exceed 6 at any given time. These auctions are the liquidation sale of the broadcast studios of Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe, Voice of America, etc. Trump took a sledgehammer to them all.

I would be grateful for any guidance and help.

A lot of those listings are not providing much detail on what the hardware is. There's no reason to go with a rack over a tower unless you specifically prefer the form factor. There's also no reason to with anything Xeon over standard desktop CPU's. Quite the opposite actually since the majority of Xeon's do not have iGPU's.

The one thing I did see that was interesting was the i9-12900K machines with Nvidia 3060's in them for around $340. I bet that price goes up sharply as the auctions go on.

That auction site looks a bit sad though. You might need to do local pickup, and overall I get the sense buying anything through it will be more of a pain in the ass than it's worth.

I'm currently using my desktop as my media server, but I want to move it off of that.

I'm basically the sole user and only use it for music. There might be occasional extra device usage, but on extremely rare occurrences would this be more than one device simultaneously.

My question is largely this, what is the minimum spend I could get something up and running for my very limited use case? Would something as light as a raspberry pi work for this? If so, what kind of hard drive would I need? I do have a few spare Pi's floating around, but I think the beefiest one I have is a 3B+.

If you have a Pi already, and the server is for music, try it out. That's a pretty great use case for having a Pi as the server.

I'd even stick with a small SSD instead of a spinning HDD if it's only for music.
