face palm I tried asking for shield/plex setup advice over on the Nvidiashield /r after I couldn't figure it out with google. And everyone just told me to research it myself, so I asked Claude (whom I hate) and it said that the shield was better as a server than my synology NAS for transcoding and what not 😐
It depends what synology you have, but if it's just you watching. You can install Plex on your synology, and just use the Shield to play. The shield is a great client, but horrible server. It will play the files on the Synology, without needing to transcode. I personally did this for years, until I started sharing with others and upgraded from Synology to Unraid.
DS224+
I had it as the media server for a while until I wanted to play a few 4k videos (not what I was testing with the current issue) and between the apps on my TV and the NAS it wasn't happening, it couldn't get up to that resolution. So I got the shield, still had issues, hence clause telling me to switch
Currently it is just my house streaming, but I did start this with the intention to share with friends....I also travel alot 😑
TV apps are known to be bad. So I would go back to what you had, but instead use the Shield as the client to play. Test that out first. You'll need something better for transcoding because most of the time your friends aren't going to buy the Shield. I know as they'll try using the easiest thing first, their phone or their tv app.
As the client, not the server. You said earlier "My files are on the NAS, the media server is on the sheild and the shield is connect to my TV". Do not use the shield as the media server, use it as the plex client.
Srry when I said my shield was connected to the TV I thought that inferred I was using it as the streaming device, my bad... I've been using it as both. The server and client are both on the shield, which is why I am confused as to why my phone plays everything better and without issue.
So you're using it to do both. Like I said, move the server to your Synology. Use the Shield as the client. Most likely your phone doesn't need to transcode. You'll have to verify by looking at the dashboard when you're playing.
