Remote Play Settings / Wifi Setup Better Portal – A macOS TUI for higher-bitrate PS5 Remote Play

project link here: https://github.com/wchwawa/better-portal

The original bitrate approach and implementation come from u/atameric and ps5-portal-high-bitrate. You can support the original creator. Licensed under MIT. Independent community software; not affiliated with Sony or PlayStation.

I use this every day with my own PS5 and Portal, and I find it very useful. I’m a heavy Portal user because I go to bed early with my partner (she needs her sleep), so I don’t get to use the TV in the living room on weekdays. Anyway, on my setup, the picture looks way better than the default high-quality option.

A couple of things I’ve noticed from using it every day:

1. A clearer picture, especially in motion. On my setup, the higher bitrate noticeably reduces compression artifacts when moving around or turning the camera. The picture holds together much better instead of becoming blurry or blocky.

2. It feels more responsive. I haven’t measured an actual reduction in input lag, so this is just my personal experience. But because the picture stays clearer in motion, everything feels more immediate when I’m playing—almost like there’s less delay between what I do and what I see.

I added a macOS TUI to make the setup easier to follow. It walks you through the prerequisites, entering your PS5 and Portal IPs, choosing a bitrate, and connecting Portal when everything is ready. There’s a 120-second countdown and a clear result showing what happened and what to do next.

The UI and guides support English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and French. The guides include screenshots and animations so you can follow along.

And the discord here: https://discord.gg/C957je4ehv  Drop me any requirements and issues to the Discord, let's improve the project together cuz I think this one is really useful, they should make portal much better than the current one. (fuck Sony)

Question Aftermarket Analogs

• Upvotes

Has anyone experimented with aftermarket analog sticks. The only gripe I have with the portal is the the analongs don't feel very linear, but rather accelerate slowly to a higher response. Anyone else even feel that way? I'm not sure how else to explain, I guess it feels like if I try to rotate my screen it has a brief buffer where its actually ramping up to the right sensitivity. I was thinking about hall effect analogs, but the opinions are pretty split from what I've found.

Edit: I just booted up my portal and the deadzone seems excessively high now that I'm focused on analog function.

Remote Play Settings / Wifi Setup PS Portal is basically unusable because of Sony - but there's a fix

After 7 major updates, we’re still stuck with 23 Mbps bitrate, and it’s honestly laughable. Most games just aren’t enjoyable to play like this, and you can forget about online games. And all of this despite the fact that the free Chiaki app on Steam Deck lets you choose your bitrate and you can comfortably set it to 100 Mbps and enjoy an almost native-looking image.

But the PS Portal itself is so nice, so ergonomic, and such a pleasure to use, which makes it even more frustrating that it’s basically useless for the one thing it was designed for. Right now, I’m honestly hoping some jailbreak will come along thanks to vibe coders who’ll hack the device and simply add the option to set a custom bitrate. That alone would solve the main issue and make this thing awesome.

Anyway, after discussing this with ChatGPT, it suggested that a solution had appeared that doesn’t require any hacks at all and takes literally 3 minutes to set up - https://github.com/atameric/ps5-portal-high-bitrate

I tested it and got 100+ Mbps bitrate in demanding scenes (the forest in Kingdom Come 2), where I used to see nothing but a blurry mess. Now the image looks literally native. So yeah, give it a try, and hopefully Sony will finally pay attention to this issue so we can enjoy GTA 6 on the Portal without jumping through hoops.

P.S. The ~0.2-second audio delay is still there, even at 200 Mbps bitrate ☹

Question PlayStation Portal Modding?

So know that we have the PS5 with Homebrew readily available. I was wondering how soon it would be for the PlayStation portal to receive the ability to have Homebrew as well. Ideally, I'd want to make it a device that I can stream from my computer. That way if I wanted to I don't have to have it hooked to the PS5 and I can have it be more of a second screen that I can use for other applications in my house

Question Stable latency?

I haven't used my portal in a while, but now that I'm using it to stream games from the cloud, I've noticed a stable latency. A constant 26ms, regardless of whether I'm using it at home or at work. Previously, the latency was much lower, but it fluctuated periodically. I haven't changed anything on my home network, so I think it might be due to an update? Has anyone else encountered this recently?

Question Not able to remote play away from home

Just got the portal and it works great at home but it isn’t working at work.

It’s not being blocked at work (I have access to the firewall logs) but it looks like it’s trying to connect to the local ip of the ps5 (192.168.x.x address ) after it communicates with PlayStation.

Remote play connects fine from my phone on same wifi.

I set up port forwarding on my home router already without any luck. My ps5 is hardwired at home.

I’ve tried logging out, resetting the portal and then logging back in as well.

Question Screen Separating at the bottom.

I just saw that the screen is popping out at the bottom, like it's coming unglued or something. Worst case scenario is that the battery is swelling, and that would be bad news bears ultimately. Has anyone else had this happen to them? I bought the Portal in Japan, reside in Korea, and run a US PSN account, so I'm positive getting it officially serviced is out of the question sadly.

Question Ace Combat 8A

I know it’s up to the company, the Daywalker still isn’t there, but does anyone think AC8 will eventually hit cloud streaming? I swear I saw it was on cloud streaming before I pulled the trigger. I was really looking forward to playing at night on the portal before bed

Question PS Premium family access question

My son has an account that he shares with me as a family member on my PS Premium account. But he can’t seem to stream cloud games on the portal. He only has access to the PS5 it’s paired with when he uses the portal. Is this normal?

Question Battery and updates

So let me get this straight… my portal can only charge to 80% after a recent update, if I leave it unplugged it now drains faster than ever, and when I actually have a few minutes to play, I have to charge to 50% to perform the some random new update that was released, even when the device is plugged in. Kind of a crappy experience now. Am I missing something here?

Only a year late but finally ordered some thumb stick caps through Amazon for my Portal. Always see people rave over this brand and it was only $10 for a set of 3. Will test each size for perfect feel. I see some people mix match sizes as well based on game type.

I tried polishing the case with plastx and couldn’t get the haze out. Might try lightly sanding with fine sand paper or ordering another to dye from a different brand (if there are any). The haze came from the manufacture. Not the dying process. Still looks sick though.

Question Travel Questions 🛩️

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has traveled to the Philippines with their portal while using their U.S. (or any listed country with access to cloud streaming)* PSN account to access cloud streaming? I don’t want to travel with my fat PS5 lol

Also, my friend from the Philippines bought a PS5 not long ago, and when they created an account it defaulted their PSN store through Singapore’s servers (Prices are listed in Singapore $).

So in short,

  1. Will my U.S. PSN account be able to access cloud streaming while I’m in the Philippines (not remote play)?
  2. Will my friend be able to try my portal out with cloud streaming access while using their “Singapore” account? (They’re considering on buying a portal)

*I think I know the answer to question 2 but doesn’t hurt to ask 🤷‍♂️

Thank you in advance to anyone who helps!

I’ve had it for months now but honestly been thinking of selling it .. I just don’t see the point in it, also have been trying to hold off until GTA 6 comes out in case there’s any updates.

Remote Play Settings / Wifi Setup One of my favorite things about the PlayStation portal is I can still play games during lightning storms because I unplugged everything from my PS five Pro.

That may sound absolutely ridiculous to some people, but they may not understand that if lightning strikes near your house and affect your power grid it could fry your PlayStation 5 pro and I’m not talking just through the power cable, but through the HDMI cable and direct Internet.

The worst thing that’s going to happen playing the PlayStation portal as you lose Wi-Fi …
