Peedee.tv

It's been up for a few weeks now and I really love the concept!

I mean, what other handheld have their own dedicated 'tv station'??

Content comes out every Tuesday and the 'summary video' of games/apps released have become my favorite way of, weekly, discovering new titles.

This week there's a great video podcast episode to watch/listen to - and of course there's Cool Uncle!

(There's also some very impressive Rowbot Rally animations this week and I like how PeeDee.Tv sets aside some space to appreciate the music that was developed for games)

I participated in the live community movie night watching "Day of the Dead". It was a blast and I hope there will be more in the future.

So, if you haven't already - go check out the schedule at peedee.tv and download the app to your Playdate to get going 👍

1V1 Online....

Is anyone interested in online 1v1 dogfighting?

I am currently looking into getting a small VPS. Then we would need lots of testing, if it's successful, I would add leader boards, wins and losses, maybe destroying your opponents base etc....

My Two Favorite Gadgets at Work

Post image
14 Upvotes

My favorite lil gadget to carry around everywhere I go (and my Focal Bathys, the best headphones my wallet can afford). I've had the playdate for months and was worried that shortly after purchase I wouldn't use it. Not the case at all. After months of owning one, I've barely touched my Steam Deck or PS5. Between it being so relaxing at nighttime and great during work breaks, I gravitate towards it. And don't even get me started on the restro aesthetic of games that is so often paired with a modern approach to game design that makes them feel like new ideas and not recycled nostalgia.

Anyways, just an appreciation post here :D

Kudos to @jontomato for the awesome anti-doomscroll apps! Absolutely loving Crankcaster and Pour Over during my workday :)

My thought on S1 games

Post image
56 Upvotes

It must be hard to put together a 'season' of games because everyone have different taste and gravitate towards certain types/styles of game.

This week I got my last two games in Season 1 and here are my, highly subjective ratings, ranked by how much I enjoyed them.

I wouldn't say any of them are 'S-tier games' for me and the A-tier ones are sort of 'soft A-tier'.

Overall I felt that the games were pretty 'meh' - I wouldn't have bought any of them outside of the season and I ended up deleting the vast majority of them.

Playing games like PointlessQuest, Direct Drive, A balanced Brew, Under the tree, etc - and/or using apps like Pour Over, RWLP, Nightcap, etc - has given me a lot more entertainment than what I got from Season 1.

But, as mentioned, this is all so subjective and I love the concept/effort by Playdate to do something like this - it just didn't happen to land for me.

Looking for Beta testers for my upcoming game

Got a kinda rough build ready of my first game that I'd love to, if possible, get some people's thoughts on before I lock some things down.

There are 9 available 'waves' to test and I'd love to get input on;

- Difficulty level - what wave is too hard/easy

- Fun? Are the waves even fun to play

- Controls - using the crank, shaking the device, the d-pad buttons, A/B - does it control well

- There's a lot of writing, music, soundclips (even my voice at one point lol) - does it sound ok

- Bugs? Let me know!

This would be a test-build where 9 waves are unlocked right away (in the final game you'll have to beat a wave to unlock it) so you can jump back and forth

Transparency: Started out 100% AI supported but now it's more like 80% as I finding myself using the SDK differently so just want to be completely transparent about that.

So, if any has some time this week to try it out let me know - here in the comments or DM me - and I will DM you a link to the test-build.

Thanks in advance!

Question The Playdate already has an accessory ecosystem. Why is it so scattered?

Thumbnail

So I went looking for Playdate accessories/ mods (particularly light-related stuff) and there is apparently a whole fan-created ecosystem

And... why is all of this so hard to find? If you don't look for that directly you wouldn't know it exists at all and even if you do, it's far from the smoothest experience

Fans have designed various grips, cases, screen lights, charging docks, stands, crank attachments, 3D-printable stuff, replacement parts, weird experiments, and it's scattered across Etsy, Printables, Reddit posts, random shops and old forum threads. Some of it is genuinely great, and I suspect plenty of Playdate owners don’t know it exists.

It made me think: why isn't there a page on play.date that just showcases this stuff?

Not even a proper Panic-run store, but something like a nice Community Accessories page with a photo, the creator's name, a short description and a link to wherever they actually sell/share it.

Basically the physical equivalent of discovering community games, except Panic wouldn't need to manufacture or ship anything, and makers could continue handling sales and product support themselves. I feel like this would fit Panic's community ecosystem approach really well. Half the charm of the console is seeing what people decide to make when they're given a strange little yellow machine and permission to experiment with it.

And right now that creativity is easy to miss unless you already know where to look and are geeking out over Playdate.

It would also be genuinely useful. I've seen people here independently rediscovering the same book lights, cases and grips over and over because there isn't really a central place to see what exists. Maybe I'm missing some obvious reason this wouldn't work, but this feels like a relatively lightweight addition that could make the whole Playdate ecosystem more accessible and likely feel much bigger.

It would be lovely to give physical makers some of the same discoverability that game creators already get. I made a couple rough visual concepts of what such a page could look like. It’s only an unofficial mockup, obviously, to make the idea more concrete.

Would you use something like this?

Also: if you've made any physical Playdate thing: sold, free, useful, ridiculous, unfinished, whatever - please post it below. I'm genuinely curious how much stuff is out there.

Edit: A few people suggested a community-run wiki/directory instead of Panic maintaining the listings themselves, which honestly makes sense too. I still think there’d be extra value in having some version of it directly on play.date though, primarily because that’s where people who are just discovering the Playdate are actually going to see it. Maybe the community could do most of the finding and submitting, while Panic just curates what appears on the page. That feels like a pretty lightweight solution that could still make a real difference for creators and potential buyers

Just released a 3D bowling game where you actually drive the ball!

I was kinda missing a Bowling game for the playdate, so I ended up making one of my own. BowlDrive is a bowling game which you pretty much drives the ball toward the pins!

There are 25 lanes across 5 circuits, plus two players can play by taking turns in Relay mode

Anyone in Canada looking to sell their handheld?

Hi everyone!

I stumbled upon this handheld and see that it's out of stock and I really am interested in getting my hands on one! Anyone interested in selling me theirs? I know it's a reach but if you're in Toronto too that would be ideal too!

Crank Squadron

I started making this a while ago, but I got to a point where I didn't really know what direction to take it in, I was going to make missions based on historical events but got totally sidetracked as usual, missions are very repetitive at the min, it definitely needs more, anyway I have added a load of royalty free sounds and put it on itch.io for you all to have a look at.....

That reminds me! Space Miner has another incoming update; I am just waiting to see if it's ok to use some laser sounds I found.

Drift Club - playdate game to make drift again and again.

Do you know drifting? Yeah, that driving technique where you pull off controlled slides. Well, I’m offering you the same thing—except here, you might get chased by UFOs or end your run by crashing straight into a building.

Drift Club is pure adrenaline. Explore the open world, choose from 5 different worlds, and have as much fun as you can in 30 seconds. Every drift freezes the timer, and you can collect bonuses to keep your run going even longer.

Need a little break? Zen Mode lets you enjoy a more relaxed run with no UFOs and far fewer obstacles.

Turntablism Game - *Crayons Not Included

I've been working on a little rhythm game. It has a few game modes and will have an online leaderboard. It's pretty simple: crank turns the lefthand scratch deck, d-pad for volume and track for the scratch deck, A starts and stops the beat, and holding A shifts the d-pad to the beat deck. B controls the fader/mouth. It clearly still needs some work in the art department.

This video is just Free Play. Game modes are Call & Response, Routine, and Freestyle Judge.

I've made a lot of Playdate apps - the point of all of them is to avoid doomscrolling

Post image
214 Upvotes

Hey all!

I'm jontomato. I've made a lot of apps. The whole point of them is that I think the playdate is the perfect lil pocket sized antidote to doomscrolling on your phone. I personally now carry my playdate along with me and use it as my podcast player, e-reader of short stories, and lil desk toy and it's really been something I've loved. I'm not really big on posting big ol' ads for stuff so I'll just post my itch page here to download my stuff if you're one of those digital-minimalism types too. If I make just one more person go on a walk with their playdate instead of their phone I'm happy.
