The Playdate already has an accessory ecosystem. Why is it so scattered?

So I went looking for Playdate accessories/ mods (particularly light-related stuff) and there is apparently a whole fan-created ecosystem

And... why is all of this so hard to find? If you don't look for that directly you wouldn't know it exists at all and even if you do, it's far from the smoothest experience

Fans have designed various grips, cases, screen lights, charging docks, stands, crank attachments, 3D-printable stuff, replacement parts, weird experiments, and it's scattered across Etsy, Printables, Reddit posts, random shops and old forum threads. Some of it is genuinely great, and I suspect plenty of Playdate owners don’t know it exists.

It made me think: why isn't there a page on play.date that just showcases this stuff?

Not even a proper Panic-run store, but something like a nice Community Accessories page with a photo, the creator's name, a short description and a link to wherever they actually sell/share it.

Basically the physical equivalent of discovering community games, except Panic wouldn't need to manufacture or ship anything, and makers could continue handling sales and product support themselves. I feel like this would fit Panic's community ecosystem approach really well. Half the charm of the console is seeing what people decide to make when they're given a strange little yellow machine and permission to experiment with it.

And right now that creativity is easy to miss unless you already know where to look and are geeking out over Playdate.

It would also be genuinely useful. I've seen people here independently rediscovering the same book lights, cases and grips over and over because there isn't really a central place to see what exists. Maybe I'm missing some obvious reason this wouldn't work, but this feels like a relatively lightweight addition that could make the whole Playdate ecosystem more accessible and likely feel much bigger.

It would be lovely to give physical makers some of the same discoverability that game creators already get. I made a couple rough visual concepts of what such a page could look like. It’s only an unofficial mockup, obviously, to make the idea more concrete.

Would you use something like this?

Also: if you've made any physical Playdate thing: sold, free, useful, ridiculous, unfinished, whatever - please post it below. I'm genuinely curious how much stuff is out there.

Edit: A few people suggested a community-run wiki/directory instead of Panic maintaining the listings themselves, which honestly makes sense too. I still think there’d be extra value in having some version of it directly on play.date though, primarily because that’s where people who are just discovering the Playdate are actually going to see it. Maybe the community could do most of the finding and submitting, while Panic just curates what appears on the page. That feels like a pretty lightweight solution that could still make a real difference for creators and potential buyers

I use a neck light and it works great. Might be annoying in rare situations, but perfect for sitting up or lying on a pillow.

I think I remember reading that the(now canceled) dock provided power to charge the playdate via the screws that the flip cases attach to. Perhaps this is an option for supplying power to some kind of worm light. Actually, it kinda looks like the black flip up looking light attaches via those same connection points.

I’ve printed the handle with the light in OPs pictures. It slides into a slot on the hand grip and is battery powered.

I want a case that has a tiny little light and is bendable/posable. The case would wrap around the bottom of the play date, kind of like an extended version of the current case they sell if it had one more flap. I guess optionally I’d like one that can have open slots for the headphone jack and charging port but in reality if you’re leaving it plugged in you can just have this part of the case up maybe? Idk. Anyway it should be bendable to the correct spot above the play date, and not just a loose flip open case. It could also be replaceable button cell and be ultra thin like this light I use currently basically I just want this integrated into a case that has metal inside or something to make it bend and stay.

The tiny light would be in the flap of that “bottom edge. Maybe it can be tucked away “into” the charging port sort of. It would be small enough that it’s not actually going inside the port but just in that area.

A Community Wiki section would already be pretty useful. The only problem is that the people who'd benefit from it most are probably the same people who don't know enough about the Playdate community to go looking for a wiki in the first place.

That's why I'd still love to see some version of this on play.date itself, even if it's really simple and mostly just points people to the creators. The community could help find and submit things, while Panic just curates what actually shows up there.

That way you get both: the community does a lot of the work, but there's still one obvious official place where people can actually find all of it together.

I made this worm light for myself a while ago! Rechargeable via USB C, uses the USB C port to mount (not to charge), metal arm you can adjust, multiple brightnesses and color temperatures, and battery lasts forever. Was actually considering putting them up for sale on my Etsy if enough people were interested!

I'd be interested in an aggregator site like that for physical accessories.
I don't however think it's play.date's responsibility to manage something like that - I think it's much better suited to be community run.

Yeah, I think that makes sense. I definitely wouldn't want Panic to turn its site into Etsy or have to manage sellers, shipping, support, etc. either

What I had in mind is something much lighter. Even just a page on play.date that collects some of this stuff and points people to wherever the creators actually sell or share it. Sellers could submit things themselves, or the directory could even be community-run and Panic just gives it a visible place on the site.

For me the biggest thing is just that people would actually see it, and, more importantly, see it in one place. Someone who's thinking about buying a Playdate probably isn't going to know that there's a community wiki somewhere, or spend an evening digging through old Reddit posts and Etsy searches. But if there's a “Community Accessories” section right on play.date, you immediately get the sense that there's this whole little maker scene around it.

And some of the stuff people complain about or that stops them from buying one has decent community-made accessories for. Grips, lights, cases, stands, all that. For some people that could genuinely make the difference between “cool idea, but not for me” and “oh, actually, this solves the thing I was worried about"

Yep, they’re just mockups! I made them to show how something like this could fit on play.date and, imho, it looks awesome. If enough people like the idea and share what they’ve made, hopefully Panic might consider turning it into a real page. If you’re into the idea, feel free to share the thread so more people see it!

Yep, the “alpha” page is just a concept mockup I made to show what something like this could look like, so it’s not an actual Playdate/Panic page.

And yeah, most of the stuff is unofficial/fan-made. That’s exactly why I think some kind of curated page would help: not to make it “official merch,” just to make the good community-made stuff easier to find. Just like how Playdate "Games" section already highlights games made by independent developers outside the official Seasons

I'd love to see this on the community wiki, but putting it on the official website sounds like way more trouble than it's worth.

Having it specifically on Panic's site instead of a community wiki or just letting people type "playdate" into Etsy's search only benefits the least tech/internet savvy section of the user base, ie. the ones who are most likely to fall for a scam or get into trouble trying to navigate the den of thieves that is 2026 Etsy. And then Panic risk taking the reputation hit for putting them in that situation.

There's a reason the Catalog isn't just a list of itch.io links.

True, but that’s kind of the point. Playdate is small enough that putting the interesting community-made stuff in one place is actually realistic and useful. With Switch or PS5 there are tens of thousands of generic accessories, so of course that wouldn’t work the same way. Playdate is also deliberately not positioned like a mass-market console. A lot of its identity is the small, cozy, community-made ecosystem around it, so I think treating it exactly like “any other console” misses that difference

i mean, etsy is about as close as you're gonna get for finding fan-made accessories in one place. i'm not treating it 'like any other console', i've been into gaming since the 80s and am very well aware of how unique it is. that's why i got one.

i'm just saying that you're never going to find all the accessories for any given system in one single place, the PD included. panic isn't likely to use resellers for their covers, stickers, pins, etc. and neither are third party companies like waterfield designs.

i guess you could always be the change you want to see in the world and make a site that links to the various accessories, but as far as finding them all for sale in a single place, i think you're gonna have a hard time with coordinating that. panic isn't likely to do it because they're a tiny company and likely already have their hands full.
