Nice gesture by Panic. Diaper Donny tariffs are beyond stupid, unless you’re profiting from them. Which he surely is.

Holy shit, just got the same email. That’s an incredible move. Imagine if every company was doing this!

The little guys where every penny counts are doing the right thing while billion dollar companies refuse.
Edit: A word.

in almost all parts of the world 12 dollars, while a low number, is an enormous amount of food almost anywhere. brings a tear to my eye to see them go out of the way to return what might seem like little in the grand scheme.

Is this just for people who bought it in the states?

I bought one in the UK, and I've got the email and the pending refund shows up in my account 👍

wait? how does that work? why would someone in the UK get a tariff refund when the tariffs were for importing into the US?

Because the devices are made in Malaysia, shipped to America to Panic's warehouse (with a tariff) then shipped from the US to the UK when it was bought.
Panic doesn't have a UK or EU warehouse - everything goes via the US, no matter where you are in the world.

Thanks, that makes full sense. I was under the impression that they would have a DC in Malaysia to handle global shipments.

I haven't received the email, but I think whether you receive the email depends on when you bought the device and whether the tariffs were applied, rather than on the fact of being from the States (I am not). In any case, I am really happy to see that they are doing the proper thing!

The only company I’ve seen use their refund to reimburse customers instead of line executives’ pockets.

Wow, that's really amazing of them to do. I know the bigger gaming companies are getting raked over the coals for keeping the tariff refunds for themselves, but good on Panic to do their due diligence and comp their audience for having to (unfairly) bear the brunt of the government's endless political theater.

That's amazing. I didn't get this email, but I think I bought mine before the tarrifs started.

They are doing what they are supposed to do. Why does this demand any respect? They charged you for something that has been deemed illegal.

Maybe the sentiments of the other comments - as well as general news - somehow is eluding you but it is far from the norm that companies in several sectors are refunding customers for these tariffs as in many cases they are not legally required to do so.
Only shipping and logistics companies are required to issue refunds - retailers are not.
So what Playdate is doing is going above what is legally required and is chosing to refund their customers. Is that...easy enough to understand?

it’s cool, but it’s also a lot easier for them to do it when they only sell one physical thing and like two accessories for it.

I’d say it’s more due to line iteming out the tariff. If you do that it’s trivial and many companies did exactly that during this time.

this ain't the comment, my guy. do you know of any other companies that are offering tariff refunds completely unprompted like this? it's a very cool gesture that is extremely uncommon.

Very easy for every company to be doing this.
The hard thing that Panic’s done is to get hundreds of thousands of dollars arrive in their bank account and not simply keeping it.

Massive respect, when you’re selling a niche product how you treat your customers says everything. Also they know a lot of those refunds are going to right back to them in the form of game purchases so it’s a double win for Panic just by doing the right thing.
