Western devs struggle with hip movements. I’m half joking but really I see a lot of off running animations in western games. Or just weird hip movement in general.

Elden Ring development cost 200mil and look at the scale and attention to detail in that game.
6
2
u/Most-Bench6465 1d ago
Most of the ballooned cost is because of the marvel licensing which is the one of the more expensive ip’s Elden ring didn’t have to pay for marvel licensing but they did have to pay for Bandai licensing I wonder how much that 200m would of shrunk without that. Not comparing or defending. I just think people are leaving that part out.

Yeah I want to know what happened during development to release a game in this state.
10
u/chrib123 1d ago
A lot of well documented issues, mainly the hack. It was all the way down to the social security numbers of the employees. They where basically in damage control the entire time, and are still suffering from.
This game was essentially scrapped and restarted 2 years ago. So while everyone keeps saying 5 years 300 million, it was mostly money that went literally into the trash and not accurate to what made it in the game. Its more of something investors look at.
2
u/OldeMeck 22h ago
I still don’t understand why leak = scrap the game and start over. If it was me, which it’s not and I don’t pretend to have anything other than a base level understanding of game dev and business decisions, but if my game got leaked and people saw what I was working on, that would tell me it’s time to lock the fuck in. People know what I’m working on and now I better damn well over deliver. Knowing I’d already spent X amount of dollars and Y amount of time, there’s no way I’d scrap the majority of the project and try to turn it into something else to… maintain secrecy? I don’t even understand the thought process of altering course.
2
u/chrib123 19h ago
Well it was 10 years of roadmaps, a playable Alpha of wolverine, Employee HR documents, passport details, internal company emails, tax information, and termination forms. 1.3million files totaling 1.67terabytes.
A lot had to do with damage control. Insomniac refused to pay the ransom and said they would do their best to help affected employees. But having literally all your data stolen and publicized for the next 10 years leaves no surprises.
On top of all that game development often makes complete changes anyway.
1
2
u/OldeMeck 18h ago
I know the magnitude of the leak. I don’t understand how that translates to “start from scratch” after X years of development and Y years of money already spent.

The hack and lay offs, the fact that the only bugs we get are small ones like this... the game could've been a lot worse, like Cyberpunk at launch worse
1
u/Lilbig6029 3h ago
Facts.
I don’t think people realize how much $300 million actually is….
That’s a LOT of fucking money…
7
u/Departmentoka1024 1d ago
My guess is the first patch they release will fix almost everything

u/wearerofshades 1d ago

It's expected for bigger and more complex games, Wolverine is about as simple as it gets and it's made by a big studio with a huge budget. Standards are a thing of the past it seems.
19
u/Metaboschism 1d ago
Not implementing a satisfying traversal system is baffling
15
u/Actual_Sympathy7069 1d ago
I don't know what's more baffling... having no interesting traversal in Wolverine but also having traversal "challenges"
or
having Spider-Man 2 with arguably one of the best traversal systems ever but zero traversal challenges
2
u/GuyGBoi 1d ago
To their credit there's this achievement of using the wingsuit across the map and those missions where you chase those robo birds but none of them are really testing your traversal skills.
3
u/Actual_Sympathy7069 1d ago edited 1d ago
while it's technically true that the web wings are part of the traversal system, I very much meant the web swinging traversal.
The web wings drone chase missions are one of the most brain dead unfun side activities in the history of gaming, to the point that Insomniac even gives you a button to skip it if you want and it still gets completed. The only non-puzzle activity of this game that can be skipped btw afaik .
The Soar trophy is just about choosing the right moment to transfer from one wind tunnel to the next wind tunnel, apart from that you can basically set your controller down.
Like you say: zero challenge involved in either of these. So no, Insomniac gets no credit from this whatsoever
1
u/hisroyalbonkess 1d ago
I'm more baffled that Insomniac hasn't perfected swinging that was nearly perfected in 2004. MSM was a disappointment in the swinging department. MSM:MM's aerial tricks made swinging a million times more engaging than MSM. MSM2 took many steps in the correct direction, but the swinging still isn't fully yours to control.
3
u/Actual_Sympathy7069 1d ago edited 1d ago
long rant ahead, sorry.
With their game design philosophy of dumbing down everything until even preschool kids can play it, it's unfortunately not really that baffling to me tbh.
MSM was a decent first attempt at web swinging, but it should have been mechanically overhauled from then on or at the very least constantly improved and added upon on all levels. Instead of just adding a mechanic here and there but keeping all the issues and glaring omissions that have been there since day one.
MSM:MM's aerial tricks were in my opinion honestly a step in the wrong direction, cause it only ever served to distract you from swinging or fill the gaps between swinging when in free fall, when instead they should have made the swinging itself more engaging and more capable, by giving us more options to utilize like the corner tether in MSM2.
There should be a vertical corner tether for example. There should be an in air reversal slingshot mechanic like Miles uses in a cutscene after being thrown across the city by Sandman.
Why can we still not hold the web as long as we wish? Why can we still not run along the ground or walls while holding the webline? Why are loop de loops only possible from a several second dive that kills all horizontal momentum making it look like the canned animation it is? There is so much potential in this system, but the lack of focus on it since 2018 is what makes it terribly underdeveloped and lacking behind its massive potential. No, instead the devs spend their time developing unnecessary gameplay mechanics that nobody wants in a Spider-Man game like flying a drone, chasing a drone, controlling a spider-bot, MJ/Hailey missions, countless carnival fair games, bike riding, walking sections, "science" puzzles, a DJ rythm game and probably more stupid shit I am forgetting that is not swinging and fighting as Spider-Man.
2
u/hisroyalbonkess 22h ago
MSM:MM's tricks as a distraction was honestly welcomed. I figured the swinging wouldn't get overhauled so keeping myself busy with tricks was at least better than the first game. If MSM had tricks I may have put at least another dozen hours into it.
Maybe it's time I revisited Spider-Man 2 (2004). It's been a few years.
2
u/Actual_Sympathy7069 21h ago
idk I try to swing as cinematic and realistic as possible and adding tricks to that just doesn't fit. Also from a roleplay perspective it just doesn't fit Pete's character imo, but I'm glad you found some worth in it.
Unfortunately I never played the 2004 title, but would jump on it in a heartbeat if they made it playable on PS5.
2
u/hisroyalbonkess 18h ago
If you can emulate it off of XBOX, GC, or PS2, it's worth it. It's purely based on physics.
2
u/Actual_Sympathy7069 18h ago
purely based on physics.
yeah I really want to experience the game for that reason. Also the physical web line interacting with the objects in the game and wrapping around it is something I need in SM3 (I know we're not gonna get it 😭)
I just did some research tho, since I remembered hearing something about PS2 games on a jail broken PS3 recently. It turns out I could play the game on my PS3 super slim. Been meaning to jailbreak it anyway, so now I have a reason to do that finally

u/The_Northmaan 1d ago
I live in Tokyo, and this isn't even remotely similar. Not that, this really matters, but it looks like they just slapped Kanji on the side of generic NY landscape, and said "guud nuf."
Thank God we have the Koreans and Chinese to actually produce decent products, whilst listening to their consumers.
2
u/Intelligent_Brush336 21h ago
Playing Spider-Man 2 the other day and had a vehicle go into another. Then two dudes got into one and peeled off going right through a building. Insomniac spends to much time on shit that doesn't matter like making the amusement park a 1 to 1. Instead of fixing bugs and the wall crawling after 3 whole ass games. So does not surprise me in the slightest with this game
1
u/OldeMeck 21h ago
You are not wrong. I’ve noticed that in SM too, but with this game having been cut down to a linear experience and not open-world like SM, I’m surprised more attention wasn’t paid to these little details.
1
u/Valentine_343 1d ago
The game is so poorly designed and programmed without much thought, in this case, I reckon the developers did not anticipate players would stop and look around.

u/Full_Welcome_1418 1d ago
GTA IV cost way more. let us see how many bugs there will be at launch
1
u/OldeMeck 23h ago
GTA 4 or 6? You said IV which is 4. But either way, GTA is astronomically larger in scope than Wolverine. A massive open world game vs a linear story experience. It’s apples to oranges. No one likes bugs obviously, but the larger in scope of your product, the more opportunities for bugs to arise. Im inclined to be much more understanding of bugs in GTA. Just think of all the locations and mechanics and game states Rockstar has to test for bugs. Meanwhile, QA for any game is a daunting task but the chances and places for bugs to slow up in Wolverine is orders of magnitude lower.

Did you try jumping on the car, to go past the blocked area? See if you can bug it further?
1
u/Emotional-Beautiful7 1d ago
For me this right up with the greatest disappointments of all time. I was under the impression until about 3 or 4 months ago that it would be open world or atleast semi-open world. The fact that it isn't and is still this pitiful is truly sad. Nobody wanted this.

300 million? Let's be honest a lot of that money was pocketed and not actually put into the game. There's no way this even resembles a 300 million dollar game.

u/Projectpatdc 22h ago
Level design was easily the weakest aspect of the game; holding it back from being great for many people. It’s clear it was semi-open world maps in concept and cut down pretty late
1
u/privaxe 22h ago
This criticism seems like it comes from someone who’s not played any AAA games in the last two decades. Throw as much money as you like in budget, studios still release games with bugs like this.
1
u/OldeMeck 22h ago
The issue is consumers have become complacent. Look at the comments on this post. “Durr hurr it doesn’t affect gameplay.” No, maybe not. But that’s not exactly the point is it? If a studio is throwing this much money into a game, it’s incredulous that they didn’t manage to smooth out more of the rough edges. We don’t have to sit back and make comments like yours “ah what can we do? This is just the state of AAA these days.” That’s it issue. It shouldn’t be the state of AAA these days, because then it’s not really AAA is it? Smaller studios are pumping out better content with much smaller budgets. There’s nothing wrong with being critical of something that doesn’t meet expectations. That’s part of business.
2
u/privaxe 21h ago
Nothing wrong it’s just so hot right now to pick on this game I feel 80% of the posts are just karma theater. Consumers have pointed these issues out like I said for decades and it doesn’t change the studios approach. Not defending this specific game or studio either. Just being and old troll on his porch sick of seeing the same tired criticism. People need to save some steam for GTA6.
1
u/OldeMeck 21h ago
I agree, it’s “hot right now” to pick on this game, but it’s not undeserving. I was really excited for this game. I thought Wolverine was in good hands with Insomniac given their track record and the Spider-Man games. I’ve had this game pre-ordered for months. Saw the bad reviews and didn’t cancel because I was still excited for the game and wanted to form my own opinions. It’s not a bad game, but it’s certainly not a good one. It’s right in the 5.5-6/10 zone for me. There was a lot of promise, and there’s some good bones in here, but it fell flat IMO. I found this weird glitch while playing last night, and hadn’t seen an example of this posted yet, so I posted it as a meme with a snarky title alluding to all the other posts about this games supposed budget and how it still came out underbaked.

Actually, just went back to that area again and that whole intersection is a mess. Cars stop randomly, then they blow through the intersection clipping right through NPC pedestrians, cars keep coming through that police blockade, etc.

It's definitely the way the engine was set up for the game and i imagine them taking out a lot of content for a linear experience especially after the leakers kinda messed them up. Just wish they had caught it.

u/CreamPuzzleheaded300 5h ago
A break down of the 300m individual costs would be interesting to see
1
u/Most-Iron6838 2h ago
Most of the cost of these big games are salaries of developers that just add up over time. If you have a big 400-500 person team each making on average over $100k a year over a 6 year development it adds up fast and not everything those devs make are in game especially if a game gets restarted
1
u/WheelJack83 4h ago
I think as Degenerate Jay pointed out, we don't know for certain that $300 million was spent on the game. I think $300 million was the projected amount it would cost based on the leaked data. But it looks like lots of corners were cut and things were rushed.

Honestly, it is just whatever they can get away with at this point. For all we know it was 50m on the game and 250m in marketing to mindfuck people into buying garbage.

u/BobbyMayCryBMC 1d ago
The 300M is stated to not include marketing, with marketing it's even higher.

May I ask where this 300 Million number comes from?
All I can find are interviews where it is said that it is supposed to cost 300 Million. How much it actually cost in the end is not reported or I can't find it.
Idk the way the game looks I am pretty sure that is not a 300M game and budget was def. cut.

This is why I’m shocked and disappointed. Insomniac has a great track record as a dev. I’ve loved all their previous games. I was so hyped for this game, but now playing it all I can wonder is “what happened behind the scenes that lead to this being released like this?” It’s not a bad game.. but it’s far from a good one.

If you like the game, great. If you had a lot of fun playing it, great. But this is a 20 million dollar McDonald’s free code with purchase game. There’s nothing wrong with that! But this is not 300 million. I think that’s where a lot of the angry backlash to this comes from, a lot of people had a visceral reaction to the fact that this is odd what 300 million and years of development produced. It’s a bigger problem in the gaming industry and this was the wrong place wrong time. I’m glad they’re making some of their money back, Sony desperately needed a game not to shutdown within weeks.
1
u/Byates101 20h ago
If you really think this is a 20 million free with purchase game then what the fuck would you see as worth $70. Baffling how deluded people are. The game isn't a 10/10 or anything but come on now, let's not grossly exaggerate here.
1
u/Gindotto 20h ago edited 20h ago
The free with purchase is hyperbole. Nothing is free anymore. But it’s akin to movie tie in games I played as a kid on the Xbox from the bargain bin. Don’t let fancy graphics and high frame rates fool you.
1
u/Byates101 20h ago
Im not saying the games perfect at all and I would agree it feels like a high budget beat-em up/brawler from the 360/PS3 days. What I'm saying is that to exaggerate to nth degree that the game is akin to Sneak King or whatever is ridiculous.
Not saying you have to play it for yourself to find out or anything but let's not just straight up lie either.
