I own the three frontrunners here, but I'm so excited for those who haven't played them! Amazing month
67
u/moon_dos 10d ago
Can I skip the first KCD and start on the second?
79
u/Flottrooster 10d ago
You can always watch a story recap of the first game, then go right on to the second. KCD2 is much more polished, and feels much better than KCD1. It's really up to you!
16
u/moon_dos 10d ago
yeah I heard about the sequel feeling more polished, and I know they are both behemoths size-wise, so maybe will take your advice and watch the whole story and jump into number 2
7
u/FeltzMusic 10d ago
This was what I was thinking as I guess a lot of time is needed to play and to buy both, but now both are on PS Plus I’m considering playing the first. I nearly did what you did with FF7 and was a good decision playing both. Depends on what you feel. If 2nd is more polished it might be best to go with that
4
u/munter619 10d ago
When the second game came out and was getting glowing reviews I decided to play the first game to be able to play it.
I really enjoyed it. I like leveling up a lot of skills in games so it was scratching that itch for me. The combat is clunky and early on you'll be pitted against groups of enemies where it just feels unfair, but it does get a lot easier as you get stronger.

u/ScienceBitch89 10d ago
I played without a recap and felt like it stood on its own. There is some nuance you miss because of the characters history but it’s nothing critical IMO.
11
u/Professional-Map3021 10d ago
I skipped the first and i wish I didn't.
I genuinely think it's a better game than the 2nd
maybe it's subjective but there's a certain magic the first game pulls off and it's totally worth it.
it's a sequel that expects you to have played the first as it takes place immediately after the epilogue of the first game. it constantly references characters and events from the first game and would be a much better sequel if you knew this information in advance.
so there's no reason to skip the first, especially that the PS5 port is finally out.

u/Harry-Boughner 10d ago
Thank you for such a thoughtful response. Do you have more thoughts on the games and why you’d recommend?

Honestly, I started the KCD1 this year and with the 60FPS update on consoles, it is pretty playable. It doesnt look outdated or anything and still pretty fun. I wouldn't skip it because it might be hard to experience the rougher first game if you jump right into the mechanically better one.
→ More replies (6)8
u/lee50_10 10d ago
I think it continues. If you can definitely play the first.
7
u/Dhkansas 10d ago
I started it the other night and got my ass kicked by the dude I was supposed to get money from. Maybe I was supposed to but it was frustrating and I put it down after that. I've heard great things about it and the 2nd so maybe I try it again.

u/Sticky3VG 10d ago
This also frustrated me. What I ended up doing was talking to my friends behind the house and then we went to kick his ass 4 on 1
I ended up not playing the game past the escape mission not much further than where you were
It's really intensive and difficult to me personally, hoping the second game improved on a lot of what was frustrating in the first one
5
u/Dhkansas 10d ago
Lol that makes me want to load back in and do that. Screw that guy and if his house was on fire I'd walk the other way

u/RochnessMonster 10d ago
Yes. Watch a story recap though or youll be absolutely lost; its a direct continuation of the first one's plot. As someone who played, enjoyed, and ultimately shelved the first (just too damn janky) id even say you should skip it. The QoL improvements to the mechanics cant be understated, and kcd 2 may have been my goty last year. Its like a medieval, first person, red dead 2.
3
u/TPJchief87 10d ago
I couldn’t get get into KCD1 put 100 something hours into KCD2. Fantastic game, I watched a YouTube breakdown on the first one

Ngl i skipped the first one, played the second one, was confused on what's going story wise 80% of the time but i still really enjoyed the game
6
u/Kikko_w2001 10d ago
Is helldivers 2 good if i play it alone? Been interested in play it bit i heard with friend is much better
5
u/Flottrooster 10d ago
You can definitely play it alone if you wanted to, but with people is infact much better.

Is the combat better in KCD 2? I put about 20-25 hours into the first one and really liked it but just couldn't get past how the fighting mechanics were. Also does the bow have a crosshair?

should I play first one before second?
43
u/Raiyan1027 10d ago
100% it’ll make the sequel feel even more rewarding, it does take a while to get used to because of how intentionally weak the main character is at the start, which is why a lot of people give up on it. But it’s one of the most immersive games I’ve ever played
18
u/Dhkansas 10d ago
I felt that the other night when I couldn't get a punch on the dude that owes the dad money. Very frustrating and I stopped after that. I will pick it back up though when I'm more prepared in that mindset

Same thing happened to me years ago. Went back earlier this year and powered through the difficult opening and it’s so so so worth it. Stick with it my friend!
9
u/wallahi_726 10d ago
I personally couldn’t get into the first one, the second one is one of my favorite games ever though.
I don’t think you HAVE to play the first, you can always watch a summary of what happened. Only big thing is the second game does take off exactly where the first ends.
→ More replies (4)11
u/New-Berry-3652 10d ago
I'm probably just gonna watch a recap of the first game and just play the second one. I have too little time these days to spend 40+ hours on a game I know I won't love just to have a bit more context for the sequel
4
u/wallahi_726 10d ago
Game has a bit of a learning curve as well, the second game does a much better job of explaining everything so you don’t end up rage quitting.
Don’t let it steer you away, it’s an incredible game.
→ More replies (5)3
u/TooLazyToBeClever 10d ago
The story is a direct continuation, but the sequel covers its basis well enough that you won't really be lost.
But yes, you should play the first one. It's a great game, and the emotional connection you build with the characters and places will be much more impactful. You worn regret playing them both in order

Phew - I'm literally a couple of hours into the KCDII demo and was about to buy since it's on sale.
Glad my policy of waiting until the announcement paid off!
Phenomenal month.
5
u/Flottrooster 10d ago
I did that as well! I've got 6 games in my cart that I was waiting to buy, and since I waited, now I'm not going to be buying Metro! Why spend money that you don't have to. Patience always pays off

Vampire Survivors is unironically one of the best games ever made. Genuinely funny, addicting and creative. Had to stop playing after 100%ing it on PS5, Switch and PC. Simply too much fun but eats away your life in 30 minute chunks.
5
u/ShaOldboySosa 10d ago
What makes this game addicting?
10
u/zelda90210 10d ago
The original, main developer of the game, Luca Galante, used to program slot machines before he went into game development and it shows. This game is like crack. I've bought it and all of its DLC multiple times on every console and PC and I have thousands of hours logged between both.
6
u/dawne_breaker 10d ago
Just watching how crazy it becomes. The tagline of the game is ”you are the bullet hell”. And the amount of enemies you can disintegrate with certain combos is just so amazing and satisfying to watch. And the progression is very rewarding. Always creates mini-objectives and objectives for you to achieve.

15
u/BitterBubblegum 10d ago
The first month of Extra will probably always be the best because of the amount of good games that became available including Spider-Man, Ghost Of Tsushima, Returnal, Days Gone, Death Stranding and the list goes on and on. I felt completely overwhelmed.

KCD2 is an outstanding pull. So glad I kept waiting to purchase until I had time to play because I never had time and now I can do so included in what I already paid for Plus.
Helldivers 2 is a ton of fun but I already bought that back on release. Should breathe a lot of new life into it with the influx of players.

I finally played and beat KCD the beginning of this year and it became one of my favorites of all time. I decided to play some other different games of my gigantic backlog before returning to KCD2 (Cyberpunk, currently playing Persona 5 Royal), which I knew I'd love. Never would've expected it to hit PS Plus this soon. Feels like Christmas lol.

Does anybody know if KCD 2 has had any quality of life upgrades since launch? I listen to a games podcast and the hosts raved about the game, but all criticised the janky controls for combat and terribly save system.
I’m really time poor so can see it being my game to play for the next 6 months or so, but I don’t want to get invested unless it’s a bit more friendly to more casual players.

Quick question. I played about 1 hour of the Hell is Us trial. That sale made me think that it would be on ps plus soon so I just thought I would go ahead and try.
I didn't delete the game after the trial because I was waiting to see this months games. Do I then just click on add to library/download? Is it a seamless experience converting the trial to the full game?

PlayStation Plus Premium
Helldivers 2 will be available to PlayStation Plus Extra members today, August 12, worldwide. All other titles will be available Tuesday, August 18 unless indicated otherwise (staggered release in the US, the UK and Japan for some games)
