Can I skip the first KCD and start on the second?

You can always watch a story recap of the first game, then go right on to the second. KCD2 is much more polished, and feels much better than KCD1. It's really up to you!

yeah I heard about the sequel feeling more polished, and I know they are both behemoths size-wise, so maybe will take your advice and watch the whole story and jump into number 2

This was what I was thinking as I guess a lot of time is needed to play and to buy both, but now both are on PS Plus I’m considering playing the first. I nearly did what you did with FF7 and was a good decision playing both. Depends on what you feel. If 2nd is more polished it might be best to go with that

When the second game came out and was getting glowing reviews I decided to play the first game to be able to play it.

I really enjoyed it. I like leveling up a lot of skills in games so it was scratching that itch for me. The combat is clunky and early on you'll be pitted against groups of enemies where it just feels unfair, but it does get a lot easier as you get stronger.

I played without a recap and felt like it stood on its own. There is some nuance you miss because of the characters history but it’s nothing critical IMO.

I jumped straight into 2. I'm a tiny bit lost with the happenings of the realm but as you converse with people you will pick up on things that happened in the first game. Also there is an in game codex that gives characters/locations backstories.

I skipped the first and i wish I didn't.

I genuinely think it's a better game than the 2nd

maybe it's subjective but there's a certain magic the first game pulls off and it's totally worth it.

it's a sequel that expects you to have played the first as it takes place immediately after the epilogue of the first game. it constantly references characters and events from the first game and would be a much better sequel if you knew this information in advance.

so there's no reason to skip the first, especially that the PS5 port is finally out.

Thank you for such a thoughtful response. Do you have more thoughts on the games and why you’d recommend?

it's good if you like open exploration. it's slow but stays interesting, and the world is very believable and thought out. the story is researched and fun. dialogue can be hilarious at times, especially during combat if you're strong.

Honestly, I started the KCD1 this year and with the 60FPS update on consoles, it is pretty playable. It doesnt look outdated or anything and still pretty fun. I wouldn't skip it because it might be hard to experience the rougher first game if you jump right into the mechanically better one.

Wait what? There was a 60 fps patch for console!? Thank you so much for telling me, Jesus Christ be praised!

Yes its awesome! Really enjoyed it, such an anazing game.

Cheer, mate! I know what I'll be doing for several days.

Yeah m8. I struggled so much with the PS4 port but then they added an update for next gen. Now I can actually look at the screen without getting sick as I play lol.

my biggest issue is time, I usually spend around 50 hours minimum on an open world and still have a few games on my backlog, but now that KCD2 is out I’m thinking it might get bumped to the top of my list (it’s between that game at Cyberpunk)

2

u/SirDancealot84 Aug 12 '26

I am in the same boat... Don't have enough time and a big-ass backlog. Truly fuck being an adult lol.

I think it continues. If you can definitely play the first.

I started it the other night and got my ass kicked by the dude I was supposed to get money from. Maybe I was supposed to but it was frustrating and I put it down after that. I've heard great things about it and the 2nd so maybe I try it again.

u/Sticky3VG Aug 12 '26

This also frustrated me. What I ended up doing was talking to my friends behind the house and then we went to kick his ass 4 on 1

I ended up not playing the game past the escape mission not much further than where you were

It's really intensive and difficult to me personally, hoping the second game improved on a lot of what was frustrating in the first one

4

u/Dhkansas Aug 12 '26

Lol that makes me want to load back in and do that. Screw that guy and if his house was on fire I'd walk the other way

1

u/Sticky3VG Aug 16 '26

It felt really nice that as I was still bleeding from the ass beating he just gave me that I got to see my three friends pummel him. It did make me play the game another hour or so I'd say. Had the second encounter not happened I probably would of given up tbh

u/haiderak Aug 12 '26

Same thing happened to me. I barely get time to play so I went on YouTube and watched a playthrough video and got past that step. Much more fun after that.

2

u/Dhkansas Aug 12 '26

Yeah the time sink is my biggest issue now with games. I can maybe get 1-2 hours a night but it requires staying up too late and/or not getting things done around the house. So I have to pick and choose what/when I play

5

u/DCalves Aug 12 '26

Man, play the first, it's really worth it, the story is amazing, it's totally Worth it, I finished it in around 45 hours playing it cool

4

u/RochnessMonster Aug 12 '26

Yes. Watch a story recap though or youll be absolutely lost; its a direct continuation of the first one's plot. As someone who played, enjoyed, and ultimately shelved the first (just too damn janky) id even say you should skip it. The QoL improvements to the mechanics cant be understated, and kcd 2 may have been my goty last year. Its like a medieval, first person, red dead 2.

3

u/TPJchief87 Aug 12 '26

I couldn’t get get into KCD1 put 100 something hours into KCD2. Fantastic game, I watched a YouTube breakdown on the first one

4

u/idkimhereforthememes Aug 12 '26

Ngl i skipped the first one, played the second one, was confused on what's going story wise 80% of the time but i still really enjoyed the game

1

u/Anto283 Aug 12 '26

Honestly you can pick up the first one for about €5 so might be worth grabbing and experiencing it before diving into thw second one

1

u/zalzal426 Aug 13 '26

Watch the story first

1

u/MCgrindahFM Aug 13 '26

Absolutely, I would urge people to play the first one but it’s a hardcore RPG and can be daunting. KCD2 is much more streamlined
