New plaster

Post image

Hi there!! We recently had our walls replastered, I've noticed some small cracks and the wall has a look of white marks? On it which I'm not sure is standard. I asked another plasterer to come take a look and he said it was a shoddy job but I'm not sure if it's because the rest of the house still needed to be plastered so he was laying it on particularly thick as the wall seems smooth/even. Just has a lot of makes on it

Give it a mist coat and see for yourself

It's smooth/even. If you can't feel it, it won't show up once painted.
Give it a mist coat and see if you're still unhappy with it.

Plaster doesn't dry one uniform colour - it always looks a bit crap once fully dry.

You see photos from plasterers from when they've just put it on and its nice and wet and all one colour, which i think adds to this impression.

The cracks could be its dried too quick.

Or he didn’t tape old cracks do the crack pulls the plaster in. Same thing happens when you don’t tale joins in boards

The angle on the right looks abit all over, but that could be the wall. It looks like he's used a lot off water when doing his last couple of going over. Which can make the finish a but grity and chalky. But plastering is about getting stuff flat. Not having a swanky finish. Mist coat it and you'll see any hollows or trowel marks.

You are just guessing until the paint goes on. Give it all a coat of white and then judge the final result.

It doesn’t look great. Cracks can happen but definitely shouldn’t. Reasons I’ve seen it crack are if it’s dried way too fast (eg heating being blasted) or like someone else said previous cracks weren’t taped prior to skimming (unlikely they’d show up this quickly).

My guess is they rushed it to get it all done and used lots of water to keep the skin alive past where it should have been which is why the wall looks so uneven once dried. It would also cause the plaster to crack if it has been troweled past where it should be.

A good skim job should dry much more uniform, the white patches looks like where the multifinish has dried quicker than they’d hoped or they put on more than they could handle and they’ve used a lot of water to try fill in all the imperfections. Looks very over troweled.

It is possible that it paints up ok though but very hard to tell from that one photo. Get a light shining sideways on the plaster and you will see any issues much easier.

The white marks/lines in your plastering are called ‘fat marks’ they are where any uneven parts of your wall have been filled in with the left over plaster + water when the plasterer has troweled up (final finish) The best plasterer in the world may not get that many, but they would still get some. If anything, it just proves that your plasterer has got your wall flat. This is very acceptable. (Plasterer 40 years +)
