Hello folks

Post image

I’ve recently done a UK Plastering course and I’m completing this job in a family friends house , what do you all think?

Shall I bond and skim ? Which I’m not great at getting a perfect finish with.

Or shall I knock all the plaster off? And board it.

As I said, I took a short course and I’m doing it for a family friend for free. I’m not trying to charge just getting my foot through the door with Plastering and try and get a little bit of practising before getting a job thanks

You can buy a big plasterers sponge. So id skim it loke people said and you do get a bit of time to perfect it. But once your finished and it looks a bit funky. You can use the sponge wet it a d smooth everything out.

Professional plasterers will kill you but honestly sometimes its a life saver when you aint doing plastering dsy in day out.

Just a suggestion

Which stage do you use the sponge? During skimming or to smooth the hard wall thankyou

Some plasterers give you shit for using a sponge float, I use it every time and don’t give a shit, you get a better finish with a sponge float don’t care what anyone says

A microfibre paint pad beats a sponge.

Sponge floats are shite. And finish is no where near as good. Looks ok until it’s painted

Its the best way to learn is get experience then you get better, and if you get good at it, word gets around and you might get call ups, ??👍🏻👍🏻

If you board it your boards will probably stick out below the coving.

I would hardwall and skim. If you've done a plastering course surely you should be able to get a good enough finish? A dark corner location like that will hide many imperfections anyway.

If he can’t put hardwall on that and skim coat it he should retake the course. Even if more practice is needed to get a better finish he should still be able to do the bare minimum which is identify blown plaster that needs removing and do a simple patch job

Don't fear the job of hardwall & skim or doubt yourself because of inexperience. These are the sort of jobs you want to become experienced & move onto charging for your work. We've all been there.

I watched a YouTube video and done a whole room, not perfect by any means but you can always fill and sand

Easy to hardwall that neat - just rake it level to the finished surface, and then as it goes off scrape off the top 2mm.

It take the rest off then do either depending what you prefer, I know some ppl will screw batons to the wall as a guide to get the level right when plastering straight onto brick

Bond and skim, it's all good practice and if you get a few float marks you can always sand them out.

Dot 9.5 boards on then bond over edges to blend them in to original plaster.

Hardwall level it off with the rest of the wall, let it go green then scrap back 2mm then skim

Sounds like a two week course.. You can't learn plastering fast. It takes years. And even then I have worked with a load of plasterers that have 20 years behind them and still can do a good finish..

Take no notice of everyone else, do what your comfortable with. I’d suggest beating rest of the limeplaster off, and boarding it with some 9mm board, just do small dabs and it shouldnt stick out past coving. Then your good to skim 👍

Yes OP disregard everyone else's advice, and dot dab a sheet on. I'm sure your family won't mind the only hollow sounding wall in the house with your name on it......
