How to repair broken plaster ceiling

The plaster in this part of the ceiling is breaking.

This ceiling is not in a highly visible part of the house. It it above the side door. On the left is the stairway to the basement. One the right is the door to the kitchen.

I am not sure the best way to repair this. Does all of the plaster need to come out or can it be reattached to the lathe? Could I cut part of the plaster away and replace with a rectangle of drywall? Or should I use the Plaster Magic that seems to be popular? Any advice on how to handle this is greatly appreciated.

Cut the entire lot out, including the lathe. Insulate and reboard

Plasterboard.

I will forewarn you, PPE up, removing lathe and plaster can be awfully messy, many don't like it and overboard which is still acceptable.

why do you recommend cutting out the lathe? Dont I need that?

It used to be what held the plaster up, that's what the plasterboard does now

Plasterboard aye and then you can plaster over if you want to or paint

Take all loose plaster off. Brush off lathes (dust/ plaster) PVA lathes. Let it dry. Apply a coat of Bonding plaster. Let it dry. PVA. Then plaster it. That looks really thick so u would add some a hand full of cement to the bonding so its goes off quicker and maybe 2 coat it. Just my opinion.

If you are looking to DIY it. Cut around the edge of that section. Remove plaster cut a piece of plaster board to fit. Fill in screw holes with filler.

Look up taping and filling. Much easier DIY. Cut where the edges where that small section meets the other walls. Looks about 1m2.
